Pack at least one food your child already accepts, then add another food without pressure. Let your child help choose or prepare lunch, reoffer unfamiliar foods on later days, and keep perishable items cold if the school has no refrigerator. If you are concerned about your child’s diet or health, ask their pediatrician.
Build lunch around a familiar food
A lunch is more likely to be eaten if it includes something your child already likes. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends including at least one liked food at meals and snacks while continuing to offer a balanced range of foods. That does not mean every lunch has to be entirely familiar, or that your child must eat every item you pack. Natalie D. Muth, MD, MPH, RDN, FAAP, explains the approach in an AAP answer last updated June 21, 2024.

Use a familiar item as the anchor
Start with a food your child reliably eats, then add a modest portion of something else. You might rotate among accepted sandwiches, fruit, or other lunch foods rather than making the whole meal unfamiliar at once. This is a practical way to apply the AAP’s guidance, not an individual portion prescription.

Let your child decide whether and how much to eat from the foods offered. If an unfamiliar food comes home untouched, avoid pressure, punishment, or a bribe; you can offer it again another day. As Muth puts it, “Allow them to reject or refuse a food, but still offer it again later.”

Reoffer new foods without turning lunch into a contest
Children may need repeated opportunities to encounter a food before accepting it, but there is no guaranteed number of tries. The AAP’s 2024 answer gives an estimate of 15–20 tries; separate, toddler-focused AAP guidance from 2018 says “10 or more” tastes may be needed. These are approximate figures from different guidance, not a required count or a prediction that a particular child will eventually like a particular food. See the AAP’s 2018 tips for parents of picky eaters.
Keep the offer low-key: include a small amount alongside accepted food and let your child leave it uneaten. Repeated exposure means making another opportunity, not insisting on a taste each day.

It’s BPA- and Phthalate-free, weighs a sturdy 1.7 lbs., and features a removable 18/8 304 grade stainless steel vacuum insulated container to keep hot foods warm for hours.
- EASY TO CLEAN — OmieBox comes apart for a thorough clean. The rubber seals are completely removable. If seals ever wear out, you can simply replace them — extending the life of your lunchbox and cutting down on waste.
Let your child help choose and prepare lunch
Offer a limited choice between options you are comfortable packing—for example, which of two accepted sandwich fillings to use, or which fruit to include. Your child can also help assemble a sandwich or select a vegetable. AAP guidance says children who help make their own lunches are more likely to eat them, and recommends involving children in selecting and preparing foods. The AAP’s “How to Please Fussy Eaters,” last updated August 28, 2020, includes lunch-specific suggestions.

Change the presentation before replacing the whole lunch
A small variation can make a familiar food more appealing without making the entire lunch new. The AAP suggests cutting sandwiches into shapes, adding raisins, or serving banana or apple with peanut butter. It also gives cucumber, grated carrot, and zucchini as possible sandwich toppings. Check school allergy rules before packing ingredients such as peanut butter; policies vary, and there is no universal school rule established by the cited guidance.

If your child rejects one item, consider another option in the same food group rather than turning the meal into a negotiation. For example, try a different fruit or vegetable that fits your child’s preferences. The point is to keep offering variety while leaving the choice to eat with the child.

Check whether the school provides refrigeration and whether its food-allergy rules affect what you can pack. When there is no refrigerator, AAP guidance recommends an ice or freezer pack in the lunch bag for cold foods, or an insulated container to keep hot foods hot. It also mentions a frozen sandwich as an option. The cited guidance does not specify holding times or compare container performance, so follow the school’s instructions for handling packed food.

When to ask the pediatrician
Picky eating is described by the AAP as common, especially between ages 2 and 4, and usually short-lived. That developmental context does not explain every school-age child’s eating patterns, and the cited guidance does not provide a diagnostic checklist for restrictive eating. If you are worried about your child’s diet or health, ask their pediatrician for advice specific to your child.
