Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor native JavaScript alert(), confirm(), and prompt() dialogs, switch to the active dialog with driver.switchTo().alert(), then inspect it or accept, dismiss, or enter text. If it may appear asynchronously, wait for ExpectedConditions.alertIsPresent() first. An HTML modal built into a page is different: interact with its elements using ordinary WebDriver locators.
First identify which kind of modal you are handling
Selenium’s Alert API is for native browser dialogs created by JavaScript. Selenium describes its API as supporting “the three types of native popup messages offered by JavaScript.” The Selenium documentation distinguishes these dialogs from page content.
| Dialog or condition | What it supports | Typical test action |
|---|---|---|
alert() |
A message and acknowledgment | Read getText(), then call accept(). |
confirm() |
A message and accept-or-cancel choice | Call accept() or dismiss() for the branch under test. |
prompt() |
A message and response text | Call sendKeys(value), then accept; dismiss to cancel. |
beforeunload |
A browser navigation or unload warning | Check the configured unhandledPromptBehavior and driver behavior. |
| HTML page modal | Page markup and controls | Locate and use its elements; do not use switchTo().alert(). |
| No active dialog | No native alert handle is available | Wait if a dialog is expected; otherwise diagnose the missing dialog or handle NoAlertPresentException as an expected branch. |
Handle a native alert in Java
Switch to the currently active dialog to obtain an Alert handle. Read its message with getText(), then choose the action that matches the application behavior your test is verifying.
Alert alert = driver.switchTo().alert();
String message = alert.getText();
// Check the message before taking the expected action.
assertEquals("Saved successfully", message);
alert.accept();
The example assumes the test already has a configured WebDriver and the required Selenium and Java imports. The Alert Java API reference documents the available operations.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Accept or dismiss
accept()chooses the dialog’s OK/accept action.dismiss()chooses cancel where the dialog offers that choice. It is commonly used to test the canceled branch of a confirmation or prompt.
A plain alert has no separate cancel choice; for it, use accept() to acknowledge the message. Choose actions according to the dialog and the branch your test is intended to cover.
Enter text in a JavaScript prompt
A prompt accepts input through sendKeys(). Accept after entering the value to submit it; dismiss to test cancellation instead.

Alert prompt = driver.switchTo().alert();
assertEquals("Enter your name", prompt.getText());
prompt.sendKeys("Ada");
prompt.accept();
Wait when a dialog appears after an action
A dialog triggered by a click, navigation, or other browser action may not be ready at the instant the action returns. Use Selenium’s alert-present expected condition rather than relying on an arbitrary sleep. The Java API reference lists ExpectedConditions.alertIsPresent() as an expected condition that yields the alert when available. See the Java API uses of Alert.
WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(5));
Alert alert = wait.until(ExpectedConditions.alertIsPresent());
assertEquals("Continue?", alert.getText());
alert.accept();
This constructor form uses Duration; keep wait syntax and imports aligned with the Selenium version used by your project. The five-second value is an example test timeout, not a Selenium requirement.

Work with an HTML modal as page content
A modal implemented with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is not a native browser alert, even if it blocks interaction with the rest of the page. Find its dialog and controls with the locators used elsewhere in the page, then click buttons or read text through WebElement methods.
WebElement dialog = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("[role='dialog']"));
String message = dialog.getText();
WebElement closeButton = dialog.findElement(By.cssSelector("button.close"));
closeButton.click();
Replace the selectors with the actual markup in your application. If switchTo().alert() raises NoAlertPresentException while a visible modal is on screen, check whether the modal is HTML rather than a native JavaScript dialog.

Account for beforeunload prompts
beforeunload prompts are browser navigation or page-unload warnings and can behave differently from ordinary JavaScript alerts. Selenium’s documentation notes that recent drivers automatically dismiss these prompts by default. If a test relies on another behavior, inspect its unhandledPromptBehavior setting and the specific browser-driver configuration rather than assuming every driver handles the prompt identically. Selenium’s alerts documentation describes this caveat.
Troubleshoot common failures
NoAlertPresentExceptionatswitchTo().alert(): No native dialog is active at that moment. If one should appear after an action, wait withalertIsPresent(). If a modal is visible, verify that it is not an HTML element-based modal.- The wait times out: Confirm that the triggering action ran, that the application actually opens a native dialog on this path, and that the expected condition is waiting on the same active driver session. A timeout is useful evidence that the expected dialog did not become available within the configured wait.
- The test takes the wrong branch: Match the method to the intended outcome: accept for OK/confirmation, dismiss for cancellation, and for a prompt enter text before accepting when testing submission.
- A beforeunload prompt is not handled as expected: Review
unhandledPromptBehaviorand the exact driver configuration; recent drivers may dismiss it automatically. - An element locator cannot find the modal: Confirm whether the dialog is native or part of the page. Native dialogs use
Alert; page modals require selectors matching their DOM.
