Check whether the dropdown is a native select
A control can look like a dropdown without being an HTML <select>. Inspect the page’s DOM: a native control contains <option> elements; a custom widget usually uses other elements, such as a clickable trigger and a list of div or li options.
The Selenium project’s select-list guide states: “Note that this class only works for HTML elements select and option.” If you pass a non-select element to Select, Selenium’s Python API can raise UnexpectedTagNameException.
Select an option from a native dropdown
Find the select element with a reliable locator, then wrap it in Select. Use visible text when the displayed label is what the test should verify, a value when the submitted option value is the intended target, or an index only when position itself is meaningful and stable.

select_by_visible_text("Canada") matches the option’s displayed label. This is usually the clearest choice when the user-facing option is the behavior under test. Match the label as it appears in the option; an unmatched label raises NoSuchElementException.
Choose by value
select_by_value("ca") matches an option’s HTML value attribute. Prefer it when that value is stable and is the data the form submits. Check the actual markup rather than assuming the value is the same as the visible label.

Choose by index
select_by_index(1) selects by option position. Use this only when the order is controlled and position matters to the test. Reordering or inserting options can otherwise make an index-based test select the wrong item.
Handle multi-select dropdowns
A native select with the multiple attribute allows more than one selected option. Call a selection method once for each intended choice, then verify the selected set.

Deselect operations, including deselect_all(), are only for multi-select controls. Calling deselect_all() on a single-select raises NotImplementedError.
Interact with a custom JavaScript dropdown
Do not wrap a custom widget’s trigger in Select. Locate the trigger and option elements with locators that match the page’s markup, click the trigger with normal WebDriver actions, and then click the desired option. The precise locators and synchronization condition depend on the application; there is no generic locator that works for every custom dropdown.

Wait for an observable state change, such as the option becoming selected, the menu closing, or the expected downstream content appearing. This is more reliable than assuming that a click succeeded merely because it did not raise an error.

Some pages populate a dropdown only after another control changes or data loads. Wait for the page-specific readiness condition before looking up or selecting the target option. After selection, verify the selected option or the resulting page state. Avoid fixed sleeps where a condition-based wait can express what must be ready.

WebDriver interactions normally check whether elements are interactable and may scroll a control into view. If an interaction still fails, establish whether the element is present, enabled, visible, and ready for the action your test is performing.
Troubleshoot common dropdown failures
