If behavior poses immediate harm, stop it rather than trying to preserve the planned conversation. A producer or moderator can manage chat and controls while you stay focused on the guest.
Prepare before the broadcast
Live broadcasts are harder to monitor because events unfold in real time, making prevention of harm more difficult, according to GOV.UK guidance. Planning who can intervene and how is a practical response to that constraint, not a universal platform rule.

- Set expectations with the guest. Explain the subject, format, and boundaries in advance. Decide what behavior will prompt a reminder, a mute, removal, or ending the segment.
- Assign roles where practical. A producer or moderator can watch chat and be ready to use controls while the host continues the conversation.
- Check the actual destination. If you use a studio service or multistream, confirm which controls apply to each destination. A chat moderation tool does not control a guest’s microphone or camera.
- Agree on a fallback. Know how you will pause, cut the guest feed, or end the segment if the situation becomes serious. The exact options depend on your platform and setup.
Use a measured escalation during the conversation
1. Redirect when the disruption is manageable
Briefly bring the conversation back to the topic or ask the guest to let you finish. Keep the intervention neutral and concise so the audience can follow what is happening.
2. State the boundary plainly
If the behavior continues, say what needs to stop and what you will do if it does not. Avoid arguing about the boundary on air; move to the next step if the conduct persists.

3. Use the relevant control
Mute audio or disable video if you need to stop a specific part of the feed. If the guest continues to derail the broadcast or violates a serious boundary, remove them or end the segment. For immediate harm, prioritize stopping the behavior over keeping to the show plan.
4. Keep audience chat under separate supervision
Ask a moderator to handle comments while you address the guest. Remove or hold audience messages through the platform’s chat tools; do not assume that muting a guest changes what viewers can post.

Control a guest separately from live chat
Guest controls belong to the streaming studio or meeting environment; chat controls belong to the destination platform or a supported studio integration. Check both paths before going live, especially when sending the broadcast to multiple destinations.
StreamYard studio guests
StreamYard says hosts and co-hosts can use the People Tab to mute a guest’s microphone, disable their camera, send a private message, kick them, or ban them. StreamYard chat coverage depends on destination
StreamYard documents in-studio chat moderation for StreamYard On-Air, Facebook Pages, and YouTube. Other destinations’ chats need to be moderated on the destination platform itself. Its documentation also says in-studio moderation is not supported for Facebook Groups or Profiles, and comments from guest destinations cannot be managed there. Check the destination you will actually use rather than assuming a single studio view covers every chat.
YouTube live chat
YouTube offers options to hold potentially inappropriate live chat messages for review, choose basic or strict moderation, block words, and enable slow mode. Held messages can be shown or kept hidden; a person still makes the decision about them. YouTube Help cautions: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” Channel owners or managing moderators can change automatic moderation settings.

Choose controls by the problem they solve
| Need | Relevant control | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Stop a guest’s audio or video | Use the studio’s guest controls. StreamYard documents mute and camera-disable options for hosts and co-hosts. | Confirm you have the required host or co-host permissions and can find the control in the current interface. |
| Remove a guest or prevent re-entry | Use the studio’s kick or ban controls where available. StreamYard says banning a guest requires guest authentication. | Check the studio’s current guest-blocking behavior and authentication requirement. |
| Slow, filter, or hold audience messages | Use destination chat tools, such as YouTube’s held-for-review settings or slow mode, or Twitch’s moderation controls. | Assign a human moderator to review held messages; automated filtering is imperfect. |
| Moderate several destinations | Use studio moderation only for destinations it supports; otherwise use each destination’s native tools. | StreamYard documents destination-specific limits, including unsupported Facebook Groups and Profiles for in-studio chat moderation. |
After the stream
If you removed a guest or ended a segment, record what happened while details are fresh and review whether the boundary and escalation plan were clear. If you plan to host the same guest again, decide privately whether to reset expectations, change the format, or not invite them back. For audience moderation, review held or reported messages and adjust blocked terms or slow-mode settings as appropriate.
