Decide what the screenshot is meant to show before handling a cookie banner: the first-visit experience, the page after a real consent choice, or a clean image with the banner deliberately omitted. Those are different capture states. Hiding an overlay changes the pixels; it does not record a visitor’s choice or establish permission for tracking.
Choose the consent state you need to capture
Cookie consent is part of the page state, not merely visual clutter. Pick the intended outcome before you configure a browser or screenshot service.
- First visit: Leave the banner visible. This is appropriate for consent-interface testing, audits, and bug reports about what a visitor sees before making a choice.
- After a real choice: Interact with the site’s actual consent controls, then verify the resulting page state before capturing. Record what choice was made and the context of the test.
- Clean visual: Suppress or style out the banner only when you need an unobstructed visual asset. Label the capture as modified so it is not mistaken for the unaltered visitor experience.
A screenshot documents pixels and page state at capture time. Removing a banner from the image does not itself constitute consent. The European Data Protection Board says that when a controller relies on consent as a legal basis for personal-data processing, that consent must be freely given, informed, specific, and unambiguous (EDPB guide for small businesses). The relevant legal analysis depends on the jurisdiction and processing context; an API’s visual behavior cannot decide it.
Handle consent in Playwright when the test needs browser control
Use browser interaction when you need to test a genuine choice or preserve control over browser state. Playwright’s Page API supports navigation, interaction, waiting, and screenshots. The example below assumes the site has a consent button with an accessible name; replace that name with the one actually exposed by the page.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// For a first-visit test, verify the banner is present and capture it.
const banner = page.getByRole('dialog', { name: /cookie|consent/i });
await banner.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'first-visit.png', fullPage: true });
// For a post-choice test, interact with the real control instead,
// then verify a known resulting state before taking the screenshot.
// await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all' }).click();
// await banner.waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 15000 });
// await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-choice.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Do not run both capture paths as though they represented the same state. For a post-choice test, uncomment and adapt the interaction and state check, and save the resulting artifact under a label that records the choice. Consent interfaces vary, so selectors and button labels must match the target page rather than a generic assumption.
Wait for the condition the test cares about
Consent overlays can appear asynchronously or at different points in page loading. A short fixed delay can race the banner or capture it halfway through rendering. Prefer waiting for a known selector or state that expresses the test objective: visible for first visit, or hidden/updated after interacting for a post-choice capture. A timeout should fail the test clearly rather than silently produce an image in an unknown state.
Use styling or masking only for visual edits
Playwright screenshot options include styles, masking, viewport or full-page capture, and scaling between CSS pixels and device pixels. Screenshot-time CSS can hide or alter a banner for a clean visual, including in Shadow DOM or inner frames when configured to pierce them. Masking can cover a target area. These techniques modify the depiction; they do not click a consent control or demonstrate that a visitor made a choice. Keep the unmodified capture or test record when auditability matters.
Use a hosted API’s banner control deliberately
Some hosted screenshot APIs document an explicit cookie-banner setting. For example, the Screenshot API REST documentation describes blockCookieBanners as enabled by default and also documents controls such as waitUntil, waitForSelector, and delayMs. ScreenshotAPI.com’s request reference also describes blockCookieBanners as automatically dismissing banners and lists it as enabled by default.
These names and defaults are provider-specific and can change. Check the current reference for the service you use, explicitly set the behavior you want, and test representative pages. “Dismiss” and “block” are feature labels, not legal conclusions: documentation may not specify whether the service clicks a control, hides or filters an element, or uses another method. Do not assume that a banner setting always works, creates a consent record, or satisfies privacy requirements.
Make captures repeatable and auditable
For each screenshot test, retain enough context to explain what the image represents. A useful record states:

- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
- the expected initial state, such as first visit or an existing browser session;
- the action taken, if any, including which consent control was used;
- the wait condition used to establish that the page was ready;
- whether the banner was suppressed or the screenshot was otherwise visually modified; and
- the final state that was verified before capture.
For a first-visit test, assert that the banner is visible before saving the image. For a post-choice test, use the actual control and assert the expected resulting state. For a clean documentation or marketing image, enable suppression intentionally and label the artifact as a modified capture. This separates visual convenience from evidence about how the site behaved for a visitor.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its banner-cleanup option accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. The API reports page verdict and billing status in response headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One GET request returns the screenshot. Create an API key, then run this cURL example (the ScreenshotNeo documentation covers the request options):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Banner and popup cleanup is for a clean capture, not proof of a user’s consent choice. If your test must verify an actual choice, use browser interaction and assert the resulting state as described above. ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for free: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.
Troubleshooting cookie-banner captures
- The first-visit screenshot has no banner: Check whether the browser context already holds site state from an earlier visit, or whether a banner-suppression option is enabled. Use a fresh context for a first-visit test and assert the banner is visible before capture.
- The banner appears in some runs but not others: The overlay may be asynchronous. Replace a short fixed delay with a wait for the relevant visible or hidden state, and allow enough time for the page’s expected behavior.
- The post-choice screenshot still shows the banner: Confirm the test clicked the real control, that the selector matches the current UI, and that the expected result was verified before capture. Do not treat CSS removal as a successful consent action.
- A hosted API leaves the banner in place: Verify the provider’s current parameter spelling, default, and behavior, and explicitly request the intended setting. A documented suppression option is not a guarantee for every site or banner implementation.
- The screenshot is clean but unsuitable as consent evidence: Mark it as visually modified and capture a separate first-visit or post-choice state using the corresponding test procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does hiding a cookie banner mean the visitor consented?
No. Hiding changes the captured visual; it does not establish that a visitor made a choice or authorize tracking.

No. Keep the banner for first-visit and consent-interface tests. Suppress it only when the purpose is a clearly labeled clean visual.
