Can Selenium disable the prompt?
The official Selenium and ChromeDriver documentation reviewed here supports passing Chrome-specific startup arguments and configuring a user-data directory. It does not document a dedicated argument that disables the search engine choice screen, nor confirm that a particular argument suppresses it. Do not rely on --disable-search-engine-choice-screen as a supported setting based on these sources. A dedicated profile makes browser state explicit and helps prevent tests from sharing a user’s everyday Chrome data. It may be useful for repeatable automation, but neither a new profile nor a reused profile is documented as disabling the choice screen.

When organizational Chrome policies are relevant
Administrators can configure documented Chrome policies for managed users or enrolled browsers, including search-related settings. The Google policy material cited here does not identify a policy specifically for disabling the choice screen, so policy management should not be presented as a confirmed workaround for this prompt. Troubleshoot the prompt or a test that gets stuck
First determine whether it is a choice prompt or a stuck screen
If the screen is responsive, follow Chrome’s prompt. Google advises scrolling to the bottom before selecting a provider. If the controls are missing or unresponsive, Google recommends updating antivirus settings, adjusting browser and device zoom, and restarting Chrome. These steps address a screen that cannot be completed; they do not disable the regional choice prompt.
Make the failing environment reproducible
- Record the Chrome version and operating system.
- Record the region in which the browser runs and whether the prompt appears on setup, restart, or both.
- Note whether the profile is new, persistent, or managed by an organization.
- Check that the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match.
- Re-test any proposed command-line switch on that exact build instead of assuming behavior carries across releases.
