How to handle powerful neodymium magnets
Work on a clear surface, away from steel tools and objects you do not want pulled toward the magnet. Keep watches, electronics, displays, magnetic recording media, and sensitive equipment out of the immediate area. Approach magnets slowly; a sudden snap can trap skin or damage a nearby object. Keep fingers, hands, and tools clear of the space where two magnets—or a magnet and steel—could meet.

- Do not let two strong magnets come together uncontrolled.
- If magnets have joined, do not pull them straight apart. Twist one away from the other to separate them, which can reduce the risk of injury or damage.

How to store loose magnets
Keep magnets separated, secured, and out of children’s reach. A closed, lockable compartment organizer may help keep small pieces apart and restrict access, but no cited authority certifies a particular organizer, container, or spacing as safe. It is a practical option, not a guarantee. Use the storage method and precautions specified by the magnet manufacturer.

Keep magnets away from sensitive medical implants
Strong magnetic fields can interfere with some magnet-sensitive implants. People with pacemakers should avoid close or prolonged contact with strong fields. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute advises keeping a pacemaker at least six inches from devices with strong magnetic fields, or using those devices only briefly when needed. That general guidance is not a safe-distance rule for every magnet or implant.

What to do if someone may have swallowed a magnet
Seek immediate medical attention if someone may have swallowed one or more powerful magnets. Do not wait for symptoms. Multiple magnets can attract one another across tissue, causing serious internal injury; CPSC lists abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea among possible symptoms. The scale of the hazard is reflected in CPSC’s September 7, 2022 release: the agency reported 26,600 magnet ingestions treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2010 through 2021, and said it knew of seven deaths involving hazardous magnet ingestion, including two outside the United States. What U.S. rules cover consumer magnet products
For covered U.S. consumer products manufactured after October 21, 2022, the Safety Standard for Magnets (16 CFR part 1262) requires each loose or separable magnet that fits entirely within the small-parts cylinder to have a flux index below 50 kG² mm². The standard covers specified consumer uses, including entertainment, jewelry, mental stimulation, and stress relief. It excludes products distributed solely to certain professional, educational, research, commercial, or industrial users; toys covered by the mandatory toy standard are addressed under that standard instead.
