Then choose an explicit cleanup rule: remove all trailing whitespace, or remove only a specified final line ending. If pasting should happen at the caret, insert the cleaned text at the textarea’s selection range rather than appending it with +=.
Why does splitting the textarea create an extra item?
When JavaScript splits text on newline characters, a newline at the end of the text produces an empty final entry. For example, "onentwonthreen".split("n") returns four strings: the three values and an empty string.
That final newline may come from the pasted clipboard payload, but it can also be part of the textarea’s initial value. Whitespace between the opening and closing <textarea> tags becomes its value. If the textarea should start empty, write it without an intervening newline:
<textarea id="post-text"></textarea>Check textarea.value before changing paste handling. Cleaning the clipboard payload will not remove a newline that was already in the textarea.

Should you remove all trailing whitespace or just a line ending?
Choose the rule that matches the application’s intended behavior. The two approaches below are not equivalent:

A clipboard string cannot reveal whether an identical final blank row was accidental or intentional. If terminal blank rows matter, define the policy rather than assuming every trailing newline is unwanted. Spreadsheet clipboard serialization can vary, so check representative content from the spreadsheet sources your application supports instead of relying on one assumed payload shape.

Remove all trailing whitespace
Use this when the rule is “discard any whitespace at the end of each paste.” Apply trimEnd() to the pasted string before inserting it:
const pasted = e.clipboardData.getData("text").trimEnd();This is broader than removing a final line break: it also removes trailing spaces and additional line breaks.

Remove only one terminal line ending
If the rule is to remove at most one final LF or CRLF, use an explicit expression instead:
const pasted = e.clipboardData.getData("text").replace(/(?:rn|n|r)$/, "");This leaves earlier line endings intact. It also leaves trailing spaces untouched. Change the rule only if your application deliberately treats those spaces or multiple ending lines as disposable.

How do you paste at the caret instead of appending?
textarea.value += pasted always adds text at the end. It does not insert at the caret or replace selected text. For caret-aware insertion, prevent the browser’s default paste and replace the current selection with the clipboard text:

});The selectionStart and selectionEnd positions identify the text to replace; when there is no selection, they identify the caret. The final "end" argument places the caret after the inserted text.

To apply cleanup, transform pasted before calling setRangeText. For example, use e.clipboardData.getData("text").trimEnd() for the broader policy or the terminal-line-ending expression above for the narrower one. SitePoint forum participants also highlighted the distinction between appending and inserting at the selection; these are separate behavior choices.
How should you split the pasted text into rows?
After applying the chosen cleanup rule, account for the line endings your application accepts. Splitting only on "n" can leave a carriage return at the end of each row when the input uses CRLF. A regular expression that recognizes CRLF, LF, and CR handles those forms:
const rows = pasted.split(/rn|n|r/);Use this with the same pasted value you insert into the textarea. Do not assume that every spreadsheet or browser produces an identical clipboard representation; verify the sources relevant to your application.
Where should the paste handler be registered?
Register the listener once, such as during page setup. Do not add it every time a function opens a dialog: each call to addEventListener adds another listener, so one paste may be handled repeatedly. Read clipboard text from the paste event parameter, e.clipboardData; reading paste data is distinct from writing to the system clipboard.
