How to Handle a Copyright Removal Request for a 24/7 YouTube Livestream

A YouTube copyright notice can mean a claim, a pending removal, or a strike. Find the right next step, deadline, and evidence to preserve for a 24/7 livestream.

If YouTube flags or removes your always-on livestream, first identify whether the notice is a Content ID claim, a scheduled copyright removal request, or a completed removal with a strike. Those are different actions with different deadlines. A scheduled removal request may give you seven days to act before a strike; once YouTube removes an active stream, the channel can lose live-streaming access for seven days. Preserve the notice and relevant evidence before changing or deleting anything, then use the option that fits the notice and the facts.

First identify what YouTube did

Read the copyright email sent to your account and check the affected content in YouTube Studio under the Copyright filter. Do not treat every copyright notice as a takedown: a Content ID claim is different from a copyright removal request, and a claim typically does not itself create a strike. An appeal of a Content ID claim can lead to a removal request, but the claim, appeal, and takedown are not interchangeable.

Notice or status What it means What to check next
Content ID claim A copyright claim; it is not by itself the same as a copyright strike. Read the claim details and any appeal status. An appeal may lead to a removal request.
Scheduled copyright removal request YouTube says the uploader has seven days to take action before removal and a strike. Check the notice and Studio status for the deadline and available actions.
Completed removal with an active strike The content has been removed and the channel has a copyright strike. Review the strike information and possible resolution routes; deleting the removed content will not clear the strike.

Save the notice and record the stream URL or video ID, the time of any identified material, the claimant and disputed work, the stream’s current status, whether an archive or VOD exists, and any license or permission covering the exact use. YouTube recommends documenting communications and evidence. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright removal requests and its copyright strike guidance.

What to do during a scheduled removal’s seven-day window

A scheduled removal request is a chance to act before a strike is applied. YouTube identifies deleting the content or obtaining a retraction as options during the seven-day period. If the removal request followed a rejected Content ID appeal, canceling the appeal is another possible option. Use the notice and Studio status to confirm that the seven-day window applies to your case.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Confirm the deadline and available action. Read the notice and open the affected content in YouTube Studio; do not infer the deadline from when you first noticed the issue.
  2. Identify the disputed material. Check whether YouTube has identified a particular work or segment, and compare that information with your stream and records.
  3. Preserve the relevant evidence. Save the notice, stream details, permissions, licenses, and communications before making changes that might remove useful records.
  4. Choose an available response. If the content can be deleted without losing evidence you need, deletion during the stated window may avoid the strike. You can also seek a retraction; cancel an appeal only where the notice indicates that option applies.

For a continuous 24/7 feed, YouTube’s published guidance does not describe a special process for editing an ongoing broadcast while a scheduled request is pending. Do not assume that changing the feed alone prevents a strike; follow the options shown in the notice and preserve the relevant records. YouTube’s removal-request guidance explains the scheduled process: About copyright removal requests.

What happens when an active livestream is removed

YouTube says removing an active live stream for copyright gives the channel a copyright strike and restricts live-streaming access for seven days. If the channel gets another strike, the live-streaming restriction lasts 14 days. These are platform consequences of the removal, not a finding that the uploader has been sued. The U.S. Copyright Office says a takedown notice does not itself mean the poster has been sued; a counter-notification, however, may be followed by court action.

YouTube says a strike can expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed, subject to the channel having fewer than three active strikes. Retraction by the claimant and a valid counter-notification are also possible routes for resolving a strike. YouTube says three active copyright strikes in 90 days can result in termination of the account and associated channels. Review YouTube’s current strike guidance for the status and available actions on your account.

Choose between a retraction and a counter-notification

Requesting a retraction

A retraction asks the claimant to withdraw the removal request. YouTube lists retraction as a way to resolve a strike. Keep any message factual, explain the basis for your request, and retain a copy of the exchange. Avoid threats or legal claims you cannot support. YouTube cannot decide ownership disputes or mediate between creators and claimants.

Submitting a counter-notification

A counter-notification is a legal request for reinstatement, not a request for leniency. YouTube says to submit one only if you believe the material was removed by mistake or misidentification. That may include a situation where the material does not match the claim, you have permission covering the use, or a copyright exception may apply. Whether a particular use qualifies as an exception depends on its facts; a counter-notification does not make that determination for you.

YouTube’s Studio form requires legal identity and contact information, legal statements, and a full legal name as signature. YouTube says it shares the counter-notification with the claimant. If you are uncomfortable providing the required information, consider getting case-specific legal advice before proceeding. YouTube also allows an authorized representative, such as an attorney, to submit on the uploader’s behalf through the specified email, fax, or mail routes.

Under the U.S. DMCA framework described by the Copyright Office, a counter-notice includes a signature; identification of the removed material and where it appeared; a sworn good-faith statement that removal resulted from mistake or misidentification; name, address, and telephone number; consent to the relevant federal court jurisdiction; and agreement to accept service of process. A materially false assertion can have legal consequences. File only if the required statements are truthful and supportable. This U.S. framework does not establish what the law requires in every country. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s Section 512 guidance.

How to submit through YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, locate the removed video under Content and use the Copyright filter.
  2. Open the copyright details and select the counter-notification action shown for the video.
  3. Enter the requested contact details and a concise explanation of why you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification.
  4. Review and agree to the legal statements, then sign with your full legal name.

YouTube also describes email, fax, and mail submission routes, with required legal statements, direct content links, contact information, and a signature. Follow the instructions currently displayed by YouTube, because its interface and submission details can change. Read YouTube’s counter-notification instructions before filing.

What happens after you submit a counter-notification

YouTube says that after it forwards a valid counter-notification, the claimant has 10 U.S. business days to provide evidence of legal action taken to keep the content from being reinstated. If the claimant does not provide it within that period, YouTube says the content will be reinstated unless it has been deleted.

The Copyright Office describes the Section 512 framework as restoration no fewer than 10 and no more than 14 business days after the service provider receives a compliant counter-notice, unless the original notice sender informs the provider that a court action has been filed. These statements describe related but distinct platform and statutory timelines. They do not establish a guaranteed calendar restoration date for a particular YouTube channel; allow for platform handling and check the status of your case. Preserve your options if the facts are uncertain

  • Keep the copyright notice, Studio status, relevant stream or VOD details, and communications.
  • Collect the license, permission, or other records that cover the specific material and the way it was used.
  • Do not file a counter-notification unless you can truthfully make the required legal statements.
  • If ownership, a license chain, a copyright exception, or litigation risk is unclear, a qualified copyright attorney can assess the situation. Legal advice is a conditional option, not a requirement for every notice.

YouTube states that it cannot determine ownership or mediate on behalf of content owners. The official process is described in YouTube’s copyright removal tips. YouTube also reports that it received removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022; that figure covers videos generally, not 24/7 livestreams specifically, and says nothing about the accuracy of individual requests. See About copyright removal requests.
