A broken laptop hinge may be repairable, but the right fix depends on whether the hinge itself, its mounting points, or the surrounding case has failed. Stop forcing the lid, identify the exact laptop model, and check its matching service instructions before deciding between a careful DIY repair and professional service.
What to do first when a laptop hinge breaks
Stop opening and closing a lid that binds, separates, or pulls the case apart. Continued movement can put additional stress on the display and nearby parts, although the extent of any resulting damage depends on the laptop and the failure.

- Shut the laptop down and disconnect external power.
- Support the display and base together when moving it; avoid repeatedly testing the hinge.
- If the lid closes without pressure, keep it closed for transport. Do not force it shut against a displaced hinge or bezel.
- Arrange qualified service rather than continuing DIY work if the battery looks swollen or damaged.
Do not assume the screen is broken just because the bezel has separated, or that the hinge mounts are intact because the screen still works. These parts need to be inspected separately.

A loose or separated hinge can involve a failed hinge, damaged fasteners or mounting points, or a cracked lid, bezel, or base enclosure. These are possible causes, not a list of parts every repair requires. Lenovo’s maintenance documentation treats hinges as replaceable components, while its customer-induced-damage guide shows hinge damage separately from broken cover or bezel damage. If the display image is damaged, the panel or a larger display assembly may also need attention. The exact parts list cannot be determined without the full model and an inspection of the hinge area, screen, and cables.
Decide whether DIY repair is appropriate
DIY may suit a limited, well-understood repair
Consider doing the repair yourself only if you can find the official instructions for your exact model, obtain parts confirmed for that model, and have the tools and experience to follow the procedure. A hinge repair is not a universal sequence: Lenovo’s manual specifies different prerequisites for its covered display sizes. Some procedures require removing components such as the display assembly, hinge cover, and panel bezel; for certain sizes, the panel must also be removed before the hinges.

Choose a repair service when damage is broader or uncertain
Professional service is a sensible option if the case is splitting, the display is lifting, the screen or its cables may be damaged, the battery is not readily accessible, or you lack experience with model-specific laptop disassembly. Get a quote using the exact model and a clear description of the visible damage. Cost and warranty coverage depend on the laptop, applicable warranty terms, and the service provider’s assessment; they cannot be generalized from the available manufacturer examples.

How to find the correct instructions and parts
- Identify the full model and type. Check the laptop’s label or its system information. A product family name alone may not distinguish the relevant variant.
- Find the matching official maintenance or service guide. Confirm that its model and display-size coverage match your laptop. For example, the Lenovo manual cited above applies to specified IdeaPad Slim 3i variants, not laptops generally.
- Check the repair prerequisites and parts list. Determine which covers or display components must come off and whether the guide identifies the hinge, lid, bezel, or base enclosure as a separate part.
- Match any replacement hardware to the exact model. A generic “laptop hinge replacement parts” listing is not proof of compatibility. Confirm the manufacturer model and the relevant part information before ordering.
Do not use another laptop’s guide as a substitute. Part names, disassembly order, and required tools can differ even within a product line.

Power down the laptop, disconnect external power, and follow the battery-disconnection instructions in the exact model’s service guide before opening the case. These precautions are model-specific: ASUS’s documented procedure says, “Please be sure to pull out adapter and disconnect the battery,” while Dell’s Latitude 5410 sequence lists battery removal before hinge-cap work. Consult the applicable ASUS manual or the Dell Latitude 5410 hinge-cap instructions only for the models they cover; neither is a general procedure for other laptops.

What a model-specific repair generally involves
The broad sequence is to identify the model, consult its official guide, inspect the hinge and nearby mounting surfaces, disconnect power and the battery as instructed, remove the specified covers or display components, replace confirmed damaged parts, and reassemble and check the display’s movement and function. The actual disassembly steps and hardware specifications must come from the exact guide. Screw sizes or torque values in one manufacturer’s manual should not be applied to another laptop.
