A single jungle sapling grows a regular 1×1 jungle tree. To get the much taller 2×2 jungle tree, you need four jungle saplings planted together in a square, with a clear column of open space above them. If a tree won’t grow, the cause is almost always the layout or an obstruction, not the sapling itself. Bone meal can speed growth, but it cannot clear a blocked space.
Choose which jungle tree you want
Jungle trees come in two forms, and the planting method decides which one you get. The two forms differ in sapling count, space, wood yield and harvesting effort, so decide before you clear ground.

| Factor | Regular jungle tree (1×1) | Large jungle tree (2×2) |
|---|---|---|
| Saplings needed | One jungle sapling | Four jungle saplings in one complete 2×2 square |
| Trunk | 1×1 | 2×2 |
| Space to clear | Room for a single narrow trunk and its canopy | A 5×5 open column rising at least 11 blocks above the saplings, plus a 3×3 open base at sapling level |
| Height | Smaller form | Can reach 32 blocks (community Minecraft Wiki jungle tree reference) |
| Wood yield | Lower | Substantially higher |
| Harvesting | Quicker and less risky | Takes longer and carries a fall risk |
The large tree needs more space and effort, but it is the only option that gives you the tall, thick trunk. If you only need a few logs, one sapling is enough.
Plant a regular jungle tree
- Obtain a jungle sapling. Sapling drops are sparse (see the harvesting section below), so keep spares if you plan to plant more than one.
- Place the sapling on a suitable soil block, such as dirt or grass block. Do not plant it on blocks that are not valid for saplings.
- Make sure the space above the sapling is open. A regular tree still needs its canopy and trunk room, so remove overhangs and nearby build parts.
- Wait for growth, or apply bone meal to the sapling to speed it up (see the bone meal section below).
Plant a large 2×2 jungle tree
The large form is a layout problem. The four saplings must form one complete, adjacent 2×2 square. If any of the four positions is empty or occupied by a non-sapling block, you will get a regular tree or nothing at all.

- Choose a flat area of soil blocks four wide and two deep, then mark the four sapling positions.
- Place one jungle sapling in each corner of the 2×2 square. Confirm all four are sapling blocks and touch one another on their edges.
- Clear the clearance zone before you plant. The Minecraft Wiki’s community jungle tree reference describes a 5×5 column of open air centered on the northwest sapling, rising at least 11 blocks above the sapling level. Its base is a 3×3 open area at sapling level.
- Check the column from the top down, then from every side. Leaves, roofs, beams, signs, torches and other blocks inside the column can prevent growth.
- Apply bone meal to any one of the four saplings once the layout and clearance are correct.
The clearance numbers above come from one community reference. Treat them as a planning guide, and leave a little extra room in case your version differs.
How bone meal works here
Bone meal accelerates growth on any sapling in the group, so you do not have to apply it to each of the four saplings separately. It cannot override obstructions. If a tree is blocked, bone meal will not make it grow, so fix the space first and then use bone meal.

- Incomplete square: For a large tree, all four saplings must be placed adjacent to one another in a 2×2 pattern. A single gap or misplaced sapling produces the wrong form or no growth.
- Obstructed column: Inspect the 5×5 column above and around the saplings. Remove any solid block, leaf, or build element that intrudes into the space.
- Blocked base: Confirm the 3×3 area at sapling level is clear, so the trunk has room to start.
- Adjacent growth: Check beside the layout for other trees or blocks that might be occupying the surrounding space.
- Repeated bone meal: Applying more bone meal will not fix inadequate clearance. Clear the space first.
Harvesting and maintaining a supply of saplings
Jungle saplings drop less often per leaf block than saplings from many other tree types. Because of this, a single tree is not always a reliable source of replacement saplings. Community tree-farming guidance notes that single-tree farming can struggle to replace the sapling you used, and suggests two approaches for making small-tree farming more viable: using tools enchanted with Fortune, and starting with a larger supply of saplings.

Large jungle trees produce a big wood yield, but they are slower to harvest and create a fall hazard. If your goal is a repeatable wood farm rather than a single tree, plan for both the sapling reserve and the harvesting effort.
Edition and version limits
The clearance and height figures come from a community-maintained Minecraft Wiki reference. The sources reviewed did not include official Minecraft documentation that confirms every measurement across all Java and Bedrock versions. If the measurements do not match what you see, use the in-game results as your guide and check the official Minecraft release notes for your version.
Jungle trees and their mechanics can change between updates, so this guidance reflects the sources available as of October 2026.
