To grow one large blue crystal, use a clean copper sulfate pentahydrate seed suspended in a saturated solution, then let it grow slowly without disturbance. The seed gives dissolved material a surface to join; limiting stray crystal grains helps keep growth focused on that crystal rather than a cluster.
What you need
- Copper sulfate pentahydrate crystals, labeled CuSO4·5H2O. This is the blue hydrate used in the classroom method described by the Oklahoma Academy of Science article.
- A clean glass vessel large enough to hold the growing crystal without it touching the sides or bottom.
- Fine thread or line to suspend the seed.
- A separate small, well-formed crystal to use as the seed.
- Water and a hot-water bath for preparing the solution.
Check the chemical container’s label and handling directions before starting. Do not assume a general crystal-growing kit contains copper sulfate; confirm its listed contents.

Prepare the saturated solution
Use a hot-water bath, not direct heat
The cited classroom procedure dissolves 100 g of CuSO4·5H2O in 200 g of water using a hot-water bath, then leaves the solution to cool overnight. Treat those quantities as one documented classroom recipe, not a guaranteed optimum for every home setup. The article warns that direct heating can cause water loss, and hot solution can cause serious burns.

Suspend one seed crystal
- Tie the seed securely to a fine thread or line.
- Position it in the cooled growth solution so it hangs freely, clear of the vessel’s bottom and sides.
- Keep the vessel and solution free of stray crystal grains where practical. Extra nucleation sites can compete with the chosen seed for deposited material.
- Leave the vessel somewhere it can remain still while the crystal grows. Avoid moving or jostling it.
A suspended seed offers a surface for dissolved copper sulfate to join as conditions change. Penn State MRSEC’s general crystal-growing instructions explain how evaporation can make a solution supersaturated and material can deposit on a suspended seed. That guidance is general, rather than a copper-sulfate-specific recipe.
Encourage slow, focused growth
For one large crystal, the aim is to reduce competing crystals and allow growth to proceed slowly. MIT’s Department of Chemistry gives general crystallization guidance that excessive nucleation sites should be avoided for larger crystals and that slower growth tends to produce larger crystals in its crystallization context. These are useful principles, not a controlled comparison of home copper-sulfate setups.

- 99% Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate. To be used for large bodies of water, not small decorative ponds, water features, or pools.
- Controls most species of algae like filamentous, string algae and swimmers itch. Copper Sulfate should be used as a pond algae treatment on actively growing algae in water temperature above 60F.
- Most effective when cast out on top of thick floating algae mats. Be aware of how much vegetation you are treating at one time. Eliminating too much at once can deplete the oxygen levels too quickly for your fish.
- Granular Copper Sulfate, 5 lbs
- DO NOT use in bodies of water that include Koi, Goldfish, Trout, or Grass Carp. These types of fish are sensitive to copper sulfate products.
Growth time and final size will vary. The available sources do not establish a precise schedule or a single best vessel, temperature, or evaporation rate for home growing. If many crystals appear, they are competing for material; keeping the selected seed free of disturbance and stray grains is more consistent with the goal of a single large specimen than allowing a cluster to develop.

What the reported results do—and do not—show
In the classroom article, author Boward A. Kiver describes a further resupersaturated solution made at a ratio of 1 g of CuSO4·5H2O crystals per 10 g of saturated solution. The article says that suspending a small clean seed in this solution could produce a crystal “up to approximately 215g in mass.” That is the author’s reported possible classroom outcome, not a promised result or a typical home-growing target.

Safety and cleanup
- Hot solution can cause serious burns. Use a hot-water bath as described in the classroom method, and handle heated materials carefully.
- Keep copper sulfate away from children and pets. Do not ingest it; avoid skin and eye contact, and follow the product label.
- Follow applicable laboratory safety and disposal instructions for your location. There is no single disposal rule established here that can be treated as universal.
