The user can then view flows in the Registry and import them into NiFi; Read does not grant permission to commit changes or delete flows.
Grant a named user Read access
- In NiFi Registry, select Settings to open the administration area.
- Open the Buckets view and find the bucket that contains the flows.
- Select Manage for that bucket.
- Select New Policy.
- Select the user who needs access.
- Check Read, then select Apply.
- Check the bucket’s policy list to confirm the policy was added.
The labels and permission behavior described here are from the Apache NiFi Registry administration guide, last updated August 21, 2023. Check them against your deployed Registry version if the interface differs. In a secured deployment, an administrator must grant the user bucket permissions.

What the Read permission allows
Read lets the assigned user view flows in the bucket in NiFi Registry and import flows from that bucket in NiFi. It does not itself allow the user to commit changes to a flow or delete a flow in the Registry.

| Access choice | Who or what it applies to | Capability or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Read | A user or group with a policy on a bucket | View flows in the Registry and import them into NiFi. |
| Write | A user or group with a policy on a bucket | Commit changes in NiFi. |
| Delete | A user or group with a policy on a bucket | Delete a flow in the Registry. |
| All | A user or group with a policy on a bucket | View and delete flows in the Registry, and import flows and commit changes in NiFi. |
| Make publicly visible | Unauthenticated users | Allow anonymous users to read items in the bucket. This is broader than access for named users. |
| Can manage buckets | A user with this special privilege | Control all buckets and access all buckets from a connected system. |
| Can manage users | A user with this special privilege | Manage Registry users and groups. |
| Can manage policies | A user with this special privilege | Grant Registry users Read, Write, and Delete permissions to a bucket. |
| Can proxy user requests | A connected NiFi system | Process requests for authorized users. |
For a user who only needs to inspect and import flows, grant Read rather than All. Special privileges are not a substitute for a bucket’s ordinary Read policy: for example, Can manage buckets has all-bucket scope, while a bucket policy applies to its particular bucket.
#1 Best Overall
Give a group access instead of assigning users one by one
For recurring access, create or use a group, add the intended users to it, and attach the Read policy to the group for the relevant bucket. NiFi Registry evaluates a user’s direct bucket policies together with policies assigned to that user’s group. For example, if User1 has Read on Bucket1 and belongs to Group1, which has Read on Bucket2, User1 has Read access to both buckets. Groups cannot contain other groups.
Use public visibility only for intentional anonymous access
Make publicly visible allows unauthenticated users to read items in a bucket. The Registry guide says this setting overrides specific policies granting read access to the bucket. Choose it only when anonymous reading is intended; to limit access to known people, use a user or group policy instead.
Rank #2
Secure the installation before relying on bucket policies
The guide notes that a default installation has no permissions configured, so anyone can view and modify flows and buckets until the system is secured. Do not assume a bucket is protected merely because no policy has been created. Secure the deployment and configure appropriate permissions for its users.
Apache NiFi Registry is a companion application that provides central storage and management for shared resources across one or more NiFi or MiNiFi instances. Its buckets organize versioned flows and their access permissions. Read the Apache NiFi Registry administration guide for the documented policy workflow and permission descriptions.
