In the Chrome app on Android, tap More, then tap Open in a new Incognito window. On many Android tablets the same option is labeled New Incognito window. Incognito stays active until you close every Incognito tab, and it limits what Chrome stores on the device. It does not hide your activity from websites or from the network you are using.
Open Incognito in Chrome
- Open the Chrome app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More, the three-dot menu.
- Tap Open in a new Incognito window. On some tablets the item reads New Incognito window.
The new window opens as an Incognito session. In the tab switcher, Incognito tabs appear in their own tab group, separate from your regular tabs, so you can tell at a glance which session you are in.

Open a single link privately
You do not need a full Incognito window to visit one page privately. Touch and hold the link, then select Open link in new Incognito window. The link opens in an Incognito tab while your ordinary tabs stay where they are.
End an Incognito session
An Incognito session continues across every Incognito tab you have open. It ends only when all of them are closed. Use either of these methods:

- Open the tab switcher, select the Incognito tab group, and close each Incognito tab.
- Tap More, then tap Close all Incognito tabs.
Closing the Incognito tabs is what clears the session. Leaving one open, even if you have stopped using it, keeps the session running.
What Incognito removes and what it keeps
Chrome handles the data from an Incognito session in two different ways. While the session is active, Chrome temporarily keeps cookies and site data so that websites load and navigation works. When the last Incognito tab closes, Chrome discards that temporary data along with the record of the sites you visited.

The practical consequence is that a bookmark or download made in Incognito is not undone when you close the window. If you want a page to disappear completely, delete the bookmark and the downloaded file yourself.

What Incognito does not hide
Chrome describes Incognito as a way to limit what is stored on your device, not as a way to become anonymous. Google’s Chrome Help documentation states: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.” In practical terms:

- Websites you visit can still see your activity and can collect information even when you are not signed in.
- Organizations that manage the network you are on, such as an employer, a school, or an internet service provider, can still observe the traffic.
- Incognito does not change which browser or device the traffic came from.
If the goal is to keep a search or visit away from a workplace or school network, Incognito alone does not do that.
Shared phones and Google sign-in
Incognito is most useful on a device that other people use, but it has two limits on shared devices.

Incognito tabs left open
Anyone who picks up the phone can see an Incognito tab that is still open. Chrome offers a local lock for this case. Go to More, then Settings, then Privacy and security, and turn on the option to lock Incognito windows when you leave Chrome. Google notes that some of these steps on Pixel phones require Android 11 or later. The lock controls access on the device only. It does not change what websites or networks can see.
Signing in to a Google service
Signing in to a Google account in a private window does not switch off Google’s activity controls. Google Search Help states that your activity may be saved to your Google Account as usual. To avoid leaving a trail on someone else’s device, close the private window or sign out when you finish.

Third-party cookies in Incognito
Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito. Some websites depend on them for login or payment steps, and those sites may stop working. Chrome says you can temporarily allow third-party cookies for a specific site if that happens. Allowing them for one site does not turn the setting off for others.
Private browsing in other Android browsers
The menu steps above apply to Chrome only. Google advises that private browsing works differently in other browsers, so names, menus, and limits can vary. Samsung Internet is one example. In the English EU edition of the Galaxy Z Fold6 user guide dated 2024-08-14, the feature is called Secret mode. To turn it on:
- Open the Internet app.
- Tap the tab management control.
- Select Turn on Secret mode.
According to the same guide, you can add a password lock to Secret mode, the toolbar changes color while Secret mode is on, and some features such as screen capture are unavailable. These steps are documented for that Galaxy Z Fold6 software. They may not match other Samsung models, other Samsung Internet versions, or other browsers.
