Give each independent coding agent a separate Git worktree and branch. Each agent then edits a different working directory, while Git keeps the repository’s underlying data shared. This prevents agents from changing the same checked-out files; it does not isolate databases, services, credentials, or other external state.
What a Git worktree gives each agent
The Git project describes a repository as able to support multiple working trees, so you can check out more than one branch at a time. A linked worktree is a separate working directory associated with the same repository—not a separate full clone. Git shares repository data between them but maintains worktree-specific state, including each worktree’s HEAD and index. See the Git worktree manual.

That separation is useful when agents work in parallel: each has its own files and branch to edit and commit. However, they still share repository-level data, and you must coordinate integration. Worktrees also do not isolate anything outside Git, such as a local database or running service; configure separate external resources yourself if simultaneous tasks could affect them.
Create one branch and worktree per agent
From the repository’s main working tree, create a directory and a distinct branch for each independent task:

git worktree add ../repo-agent-a -b agent/task-a
git worktree add ../repo-agent-b -b agent/task-b
git worktree list
- Run
git worktree add <path> -b <branch>for each agent, choosing a unique path and branch name. - Start each agent with its working directory set to its assigned path. Tell it which task and branch it owns.
- Use
git worktree listto check the paths and branches currently registered with the repository.
Git ordinarily will not let the same branch be checked out in two worktrees simultaneously. Give independent agents different branches rather than assigning them one shared branch. The Git manual also supports adding a worktree for an existing branch with git worktree add <path> <branch>. If you omit a branch or commit, Git creates a branch named after the final component of the path.
Choose a branch or a detached worktree
| Use case | Worktree setup | How to handle the result |
|---|---|---|
| Independent agent work intended for review and integration | Create a named branch with git worktree add <path> -b <branch>. |
Review the branch, then merge or cherry-pick its commits using your team’s normal process. |
| A temporary experiment that should not create a branch | Use a detached worktree, for example git worktree add --detach <path> <commit>. |
Decide how to retain any useful changes before removing the worktree; a detached worktree does not give the experiment its own named branch. |
For multiple coding agents doing separate tasks, a named branch per agent makes ownership and later review clear. A detached worktree is for trying a change without creating a branch, not a substitute for assigning branches to independent work that needs integration. The available options are documented in the Git worktree manual.

Review and integrate changes explicitly
A worktree does not merge an agent’s changes into your main branch. The VS Code agent-harness documentation describes a workflow in which a new worktree starts from committed Git state and the result must be integrated when the session ends. See Microsoft’s agent harness documentation.
- When an agent finishes, inspect its branch and changes from the assigned worktree.
- Review the changes, especially where tasks may have touched overlapping files or assumptions.
- Merge or cherry-pick the work into the destination branch according to your team’s usual review process.
- Remove the linked worktree after its changes are no longer needed.
Remove worktrees and handle stale paths
When finished with a linked worktree, remove it through Git:

git worktree remove ../repo-agent-a
Use git worktree list to inspect registered worktrees. If a worktree directory was deleted outside Git and its administrative record remains, git worktree prune removes stale records. If you need to move a worktree, use Git’s worktree move command or repair the association with git worktree repair, rather than moving the directory without updating Git. The manual also documents git worktree lock for worktrees that should not be pruned, such as one on removable storage.
Account for submodule limitations
Git’s manual warns that multiple checkout support is still experimental in general and that submodule support is incomplete; it specifically does not recommend multiple checkouts of a superproject. If your project uses submodules, check the behavior and limitations that apply to your workflow before assigning agents separate worktrees.
