Start by identifying where your website project lives and what Claude needs to do. For a local codebase, use Claude Code with a deliberately limited project directory and tool permissions. For local files or apps through Claude Desktop, inspect the extension’s source and permissions. For a cloud design service, review the remote connector’s publisher, OAuth scopes, and enabled tools. “Plugin” can mean different things in Claude, and there is no single access switch that covers them all.
First, identify what “plugin” means in your setup
Claude Code, Claude Desktop extensions, remote MCP connectors, and Claude artifacts have different access boundaries. Choose based on where the project files or service live; do not assume that granting access in one product grants access in another.

| Task | Suitable path | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Edit a local website repository | Claude Code | Project directory, allowed and denied tools, and any added directories |
| Read local design files through Claude Desktop | Desktop extension | Extension source, file permissions, and exposed resources |
| Work with a cloud design or project service | Remote connector | OAuth scopes, server trust, enabled tools, and action approvals |
| Generate a standalone website concept or React artifact | Claude artifacts | Output and sharing scope; do not assume access to a local repository |
Artifacts can produce websites and interactive React components, but the cited artifacts guidance says AI-powered artifacts cannot make external API calls or use persistent storage. Artifact generation does not establish access to a local source repository.

How do I limit what Claude Code can access?
Keep Claude Code pointed at the project it needs, and configure both the directory boundary and the tools it may use. Anthropic’s Claude Code CLI reference documents --allowedTools for tools allowed without a permission prompt, --disallowedTools for tools to deny, and --add-dir for additional working directories.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Name the target: identify the exact repository or folder. Keep unrelated client work, credentials, and personal files outside the intended boundary.
- Set the working directory: start Claude Code in the project directory. Add another directory with
--add-dironly when the task requires it. - Choose tools deliberately: allow only the tools needed for the web-design task and deny irrelevant capabilities. If an MCP server exposes multiple tools, do not automatically allow all of them.
- Review permission prompts: inspect the proposed action and its output, particularly before writes, deletes, publishing, or sending data.
- Recheck after the task: remove added directories or permissions that are no longer required.
Anthropic describes --dangerously-skip-permissions with the caution “Skip permission prompts (use with caution).” That wording is not a guarantee that bypassing prompts is safe; do not use the flag as a substitute for choosing a narrow project directory and appropriate tool permissions.
Should I use a Claude Desktop extension or a remote connector?
Use a Desktop extension for an approved local workflow
Anthropic describes local Claude Desktop extensions as local MCP servers. Because local extensions can access local files, applications, and system resources, check the extension’s source and file permissions before installing it. Anthropic also documents organization controls for public extension-directory access, signature requirements, and local developer MCP servers. Specific labels and controls can change; check the current app and official documentation rather than relying on an old setup guide.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Use a remote connector for a cloud service
A remote MCP connector reaches a cloud service through an external server. Its implementation and granted service permissions determine whether it can read, create, modify, or delete data. Anthropic Help Center’s “Getting Started with Custom Connectors Using Remote MCP” advises: “Only connect to servers built and hosted by organizations and applications you trust.” Verify the publisher through a trusted organizational source, review requested OAuth scopes, and disable tools that the task does not need. Tool names alone do not demonstrate that a server is safe.

Keep consequential actions reviewable. A design integration may expose read-only tools as well as actions that change a file, publish a site, or send information to a service. Inspect approval prompts and outputs before approving those actions. Reserve “allow always” for a server and action you trust to run without supervision; otherwise, require approval when the action is proposed.

Claude Research needs a separate check: Anthropic says connector tools can be invoked automatically during Research. Before starting a research run, disable connected tools that can write to external services if those actions are not needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I remove access when the work ends?
- Disconnect remote connectors that are no longer needed; revoke their service authorization where appropriate.
- Remove unnecessary added directories and tool permissions from Claude Code.
- Review local extension permissions and organization controls periodically, especially after extension or policy changes.
Access can come from several independent places: a local directory, an extension’s access to computer resources, or a remote server’s service authorization. Check the relevant boundary rather than assuming that disconnecting one component removes every other permission.
