How to Give Claude Feedback When Its Responses Feel Overly Personal

Give Claude a direct correction, request a neutral rewrite, and use the right persistent control—profile preferences, styles or project instructions—for the scope you need.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest fix is a direct correction followed by a rewrite request. Name the behavior (for example, assuming how you feel or speaking as if you have a personal relationship), state the tone you want, and ask Claude to answer again using only the information you provided.

For a lasting change, put the same rule in the control whose scope matches your need: profile preferences for all conversations, a style for delivery and formatting, or project instructions for one project. Use thumbs feedback for product feedback, and reserve Anthropic’s safety-reporting channel for safety mechanisms or safety issues.

Start with a precise follow-up correction

When a response feels too familiar, do not hint that something is wrong. Tell Claude exactly what to remove and what to do instead. Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance supports follow-up instructions, clarifications, and rewrite requests when an answer is not helpful: My prompt isn’t giving me a helpful answer.

A reliable correction has three parts:

  1. Identify the behavior: quote or describe the wording that crossed the line.
  2. Set the replacement rule: specify a neutral, professional, matter-of-fact tone and prohibit assumptions about your feelings, motives, identity, or relationship with Claude.
  3. Request the action: ask for a rewrite of the answer, not merely an acknowledgment.

For example:

That sounded too familiar and assumed how I feel. Please use a neutral, professional tone, avoid personal assumptions, and rewrite the answer based only on what I said.

This wording is a practical template, not an Anthropic quotation. Adjust it to the exact problem. If Claude used a term such as “you must be worried,” point to that sentence and explain that your emotional state was not established.

Be specific about what you mean by “overly personal.” It might be an emotion assigned to you, a motive guessed at, an intimate form of address, or reassurance you did not ask for. These are different behaviors, so naming the one you want changed gives Claude a clearer instruction than asking it to “be less weird.” You do not need to explain why the wording bothered you; a short description of the output and a replacement rule are enough.

Describe the tone you want, not only the tone you dislike

“Don’t be personal” can mean different things. A replacement rule gives Claude a clearer target and makes it easier to tell whether the next answer improved.

Neutral and professional

Use this when you want distance and factual language:

Use a neutral, professional tone. Do not infer my emotions or personal circumstances. Do not describe our relationship. Answer directly from the facts in my message.

Concise and task-focused

Use this when warmth is less important than an efficient answer:

Keep the response task-focused. Skip reassurance, emotional framing, and conversational filler. Give the steps, constraints, and result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respectful without emotional assumptions

Use this when you still want courteous language:

Be respectful and clear, but do not tell me how I feel, why I am asking, or what I need emotionally unless I state it.

Technical or analytical

Use this for troubleshooting, research, or decisions:

Separate observed facts from possibilities. Label uncertainty, avoid mind-reading, and explain the reasoning in an analytical tone.

Do not stack contradictory directions such as “be warm and highly personal” with “never refer to me personally.” Choose the minimum set of rules that describes the desired answer. You can also separate tone from substance: for instance, ask for a detailed explanation while ruling out emotional interpretation. “Detailed” does not have to mean intimate, and “neutral” does not have to mean terse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this five-step rewrite request

  1. Quote the trigger: “The sentence ‘you sound overwhelmed’ assumes an emotion I did not state.”
  2. Explain the boundary: “Do not infer my feelings, motives, or relationship with you.”
  3. Specify delivery: “Use neutral, professional wording.”
  4. Limit the evidence: “Base the answer only on the details in my message.”
  5. Ask for a replacement: “Rewrite the previous answer under those rules.”

Keeping the request short reduces the chance that the correction itself becomes a second, unrelated task. If the answer contains several problems, list them as separate rules rather than describing Claude broadly as “creepy” or “too human.” Behavioral descriptions are easier to apply consistently.

Then check whether the revision actually changes the behavior. Look for the specific assumption you flagged, any similar inference elsewhere in the answer, and whether the answer still addresses your original question. If it only apologizes or acknowledges your preference, ask for the rewritten answer again. You can restate the original question if needed, but avoid adding unrelated requests that make it harder to see whether the tone correction worked.

Choose the persistent control by scope

Claude separates account-wide profile preferences, response-delivery styles, and project-specific instructions. They solve different problems, so putting a rule in the wrong place can leave other conversations unchanged. Anthropic explains these distinctions in Understanding Claude’s Personalization Features and Configuring and Using Styles.

Control Scope Best use for an overly personal response Availability or qualification
Profile preferences All conversations A general rule such as “Do not assume my feelings; use a neutral tone.” Anthropic describes profile preferences as applying across conversations.
Style How answers are delivered Consistent formatting and tone, such as concise, formal, or explanatory delivery. Preset styles listed by Anthropic are Normal, Concise, Formal, and Explanatory; custom styles can also be created.
Project instructions Chats within one project A rule needed only for a particular work, study, or client context. Anthropic says Projects are available on paid Claude plans.
Thumbs feedback A specific response and product feedback Tell the product team that a response was unhelpful or had an unwanted tone. On Claude for Work Team and Enterprise, an owner can control whether members may submit thumbs feedback.
Safety report Safety mechanism or safety issue Report a genuine safety concern rather than a normal style preference. Anthropic directs users to [email protected] and asks for enough detail to reproduce the issue.

A practical way to choose is to ask whether you want to change a single answer, a general communication preference, the way answers are presented, or behavior within one project. A follow-up handles the first. Profile preferences are the broadest persistent scope; styles address delivery; project instructions stay local to a project. Thumbs feedback and safety reporting serve different purposes from those conversation controls: they communicate a product-quality concern or a safety issue rather than setting a tone preference.

Set an account-wide rule in profile preferences

If overly personal language is a problem in every type of chat, put the rule in Claude’s profile preferences. Open Settings, find the profile preferences field, and describe the communication behavior you want across conversations. Anthropic says these preferences apply across conversations.

A useful entry is:

Use a neutral, respectful, professional tone in every conversation. Do not assume how I feel, describe our relationship, or offer unsolicited personal reassurance. Base answers on what I explicitly provide. If my request is ambiguous, ask a factual clarifying question.

Keep account-wide preferences general. Do not put a one-time formatting request, a project deadline, or confidential case details in a rule intended for all chats. Those belong in the relevant conversation or project.

Think of the profile preference as a standing communication rule, not a replacement for the details of each request. “Do not infer my feelings” can apply broadly; instructions about one assignment, client, or technical problem are narrower and should remain with that work. If only a particular conversation needs a different tone, give Claude a follow-up instruction rather than making a global change you may not want elsewhere.

Choose a style for delivery and formatting

Use a style when the issue is primarily how answers are written rather than what Claude should know about you. Anthropic’s Styles guidance lists Normal, Concise, Formal, and Explanatory presets. You can also create a custom style by describing the desired behavior or providing writing samples.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Which preset is the closest fit?

  • Formal: a natural starting point when you want professional distance.
  • Concise: useful when personal framing appears in long introductions or reassurance.
  • Explanatory: suitable when you want detail but still need to state that emotional assumptions are unwelcome.
  • Normal: a baseline if you want to keep standard delivery and address the specific behavior through a preference or follow-up.

A style controls delivery and formatting; it is not a substitute for telling Claude what facts it may infer about you. For a strict boundary, combine a suitable style with a direct instruction such as “Do not infer my emotions or motives.”

Create a custom style rule

Describe observable output requirements instead of asking for a personality change:

Write in a neutral, professional style. Address the question directly. Do not use intimate, therapeutic, or relationship language. Do not infer my feelings, intentions, or personal history. Use headings and bullet points when they improve clarity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you provide a writing sample, select one that demonstrates the desired distance and structure. Remove personal or confidential material that is not needed to show the style.

Use a custom style when the presets do not describe the mix you want—for example, detailed explanations in formal language without emotional framing. A description is enough to specify those preferences; a sample can show the kind of structure or distance you mean. Either way, keep the instruction focused on the output you want. Avoid asking Claude to adopt a human identity or a different relationship to you when the actual need is simply more formal wording.

Add the boundary to one project

When the unwanted tone occurs only in a particular project, add the rule to that project’s instructions rather than changing every conversation. This is appropriate for a workplace project, a school assignment, or a technical task where you want consistently impersonal output. Anthropic identifies project instructions as specific to project chats and says Projects are available on paid plans.

Project instruction example:

For this project, communicate as a neutral technical assistant. Do not speculate about the user’s emotions or personal circumstances. Do not use relationship language or unsolicited reassurance. Distinguish facts, assumptions, and open questions, and ask for missing technical details directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the instruction tied to the project. If you later need the same boundary everywhere, move the general portion to profile preferences and leave project instructions for context unique to that work.

Use thumbs feedback for the right purpose

If a thumbs up/down control is available on the response, use it to identify an unhelpful answer. Select the negative option when the response’s personal assumptions or tone are a product-quality problem, and include a concise explanation if a comment field is offered.

Describe the observable failure: “Assumed I was anxious and used intimate language; I requested a neutral, factual answer.” Avoid entering sensitive personal information that is not needed to explain the response.

For Claude for Work Team and Enterprise, Anthropic says an Owner or Primary Owner can manage whether members may submit thumbs feedback in Data Management Settings. If the control is missing in a work account, that owner-managed setting may explain why; do not assume the same setting applies to every Claude plan. Details are in Managing user feedback settings on Claude for Work (Team and Enterprise) plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thumbs feedback is not the same as a saved preference. It can flag that one response was unhelpful, but use a follow-up, profile preference, style, or project instruction when you want Claude to change how it responds in the conversation or in future chats. If you are using a work account and cannot see the control, the Team or Enterprise owner may have disabled member feedback; Anthropic describes that setting specifically for those plans.

Separate a style complaint from a safety report

An overly familiar answer is usually a communication preference that can be corrected in the conversation or settings. A safety report is for a safety mechanism or a safety issue—for example, a response that creates a serious safety concern, or a problem with how a safety control behaves.

Anthropic asks users to report safety issues and safety-mechanism user-experience issues to [email protected]. Include enough detail for the issue to be reproduced: the relevant prompt, the response, what made it a safety concern, and the steps that led to it. Anthropic also describes an in-product reporting option for shared Claude conversation content. Its instructions are in Reporting, Blocking, and Removing Content from Claude.

Do not use a safety channel simply because you prefer formal wording. Conversely, do not treat a genuine safety concern as something a style setting must solve. When making a report, include the sequence that led to the concern so Anthropic has enough detail to reproduce it; omit unrelated personal details. For shared conversation content, Anthropic’s reporting article also describes an in-product reporting option.

What to do when Claude keeps doing it

The next answer acknowledges the rule but repeats the behavior

Point to the exact repeated phrase and ask for another rewrite. Replace broad criticism with a testable instruction:

You repeated the assumption that I am worried. Remove that assumption and answer only the factual question: [repeat the question]. Use neutral wording and no emotional interpretation.

If the issue recurs across unrelated chats, move the rule from a one-off correction into profile preferences or a suitable style.

The problem appears only in one project

Keep the account-wide settings unchanged and add the boundary to that project’s instructions. This prevents a project-specific communication rule from affecting unrelated work.

You want more detail but not more intimacy

Say both things explicitly: request a full explanation while prohibiting emotional framing. “Give a detailed technical explanation, but do not reassure me, speculate about my feelings, or use personal relationship language” is clearer than simply choosing “Explanatory.”

You cannot find a control

Check the scope before assuming a feature is broken. Profile preferences and styles address different settings; Projects may depend on a paid plan; and thumbs-feedback availability can depend on work-account administration. Use the immediate follow-up correction while you determine which persistent option your account provides.

If the control is not available in your account, the immediate correction is still useful for the current answer. Do not assume that every missing control indicates a problem: project access depends on plan, and the specific feedback setting described by Anthropic is for Claude for Work Team and Enterprise and is managed by an Owner or Primary Owner.

Copy-and-paste feedback templates

Situation Suggested message
Claude inferred an emotion “You inferred that I am anxious, but I did not say that. Remove the emotional assumption and rewrite the answer in a neutral, professional tone.”
Claude used relationship language “Do not describe our relationship or speak as if you know me personally. Answer the question directly from the information provided.”
Claude added unsolicited reassurance “Skip personal reassurance and emotional framing. Keep the response respectful, factual, and focused on the requested task.”
The entire answer is too familiar “This response is too personal. Use formal, neutral language, avoid assumptions about my feelings or motives, and rewrite the complete answer.”
You need an analytical answer “Separate facts from possibilities, label uncertainty, and do not infer my emotions, intentions, or personal history.”
Reporting a product-quality problem “The response assumed an emotion I did not state and used intimate language after I requested neutrality. Please record this as unwanted tone and personalization.”

For a correction in an active chat, include a request to rewrite so Claude knows the next step. For a saved instruction, remove references to “the previous answer” and phrase the boundary as a standing rule. For product feedback, describe what happened in that response rather than treating the feedback box as a place to configure future style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick decision checklist

  • One response only: send a direct correction and request a rewrite.
  • Every conversation: add a neutral-tone rule to profile preferences.
  • Formatting and delivery: choose Formal or Concise, or create a custom style with explicit boundaries.
  • One project: add the rule to that project’s instructions; Projects are described by Anthropic as available on paid plans.
  • Product feedback: use thumbs feedback when available; work-plan administrators can control member access.
  • Safety concern: report it through Anthropic’s safety channel with reproducible details.

The practical sequence is simple: correct the current answer first, then save the instruction at the narrowest scope that solves the recurring problem. That keeps a preference for professional distance from becoming an unnecessary rule in conversations where you want a different style.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I say to Claude when it assumes how I feel?

Name the assumption, state that you did not provide that information, and ask for a neutral rewrite. For example: “You assumed I was anxious, but I did not say that. Remove the emotional assumption and answer the question in a neutral, professional tone.” Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance supports follow-up instructions, clarifications, and rewrite requests.

How do I make Claude less personal in every conversation?

Add a general communication rule to profile preferences in Settings. Anthropic says profile preferences apply across conversations. State the behavior you want to avoid—such as inferring feelings or offering unsolicited reassurance—and the tone you prefer. Use a conversation or project instruction for a one-off or project-specific need instead.

Should I choose Formal or Concise?

Formal is a natural starting point for professional distance; Concise may help when lengthy introductions or reassurance are the issue. Anthropic also lists Normal and Explanatory presets, and supports custom styles. A style affects delivery and formatting, so pair it with a direct instruction if you specifically want Claude not to infer your feelings or motives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make Claude use a neutral tone only for one project?

Yes. Put the boundary in that project’s instructions if the issue is limited to its chats. Anthropic describes project instructions as project-specific and says Projects are available on paid Claude plans. For a rule you want across conversations, use profile preferences instead.

Should I use thumbs-down feedback or report Claude to Anthropic?

Use thumbs feedback, when available, to flag an unhelpful response or unwanted tone as product feedback. Anthropic says an Owner or Primary Owner can manage that control for Claude for Work Team and Enterprise. Reserve [email protected] and the reporting options described in Anthropic’s reporting guidance for safety issues or safety-mechanism concerns, rather than an ordinary preference for formal wording.

The Bottom Line

Correct the current answer with a concrete behavior, a replacement tone, and a rewrite request. If the issue recurs, use profile preferences for a rule across chats, a style for delivery, or project instructions for one project. Treat thumbs feedback as product feedback and contact Anthropic’s safety channel only for safety issues or safety-mechanism concerns.
