How to Give an AI Assistant Long-Term Memory with Hindsight

Hindsight adds a separate memory layer to an AI assistant, with bank-scoped retention and recall across runs. Here’s how its documented Microsoft Agent Framework integration works and how to verify it.

When an AI assistant forgets earlier conversations, a separate memory layer can retain useful details and bring relevant ones back in later sessions. Hindsight provides that layer: an application can store information, recall it for a new interaction, and use a reflection operation to synthesize an answer from what it has retained. The walkthrough below follows Hindsight’s documented Microsoft Agent Framework integration; it is not a claim of personal implementation or testing.

Why an assistant forgets—and what Hindsight changes

Many assistants treat each request as a fresh interaction unless the application supplies prior context. Hindsight adds persistent memory outside the model’s ordinary conversation context. The application can retain information after a run and retrieve relevant memories before a later run, giving the assistant a way to use details across sessions.

Hindsight’s core operations are retain, recall, and reflect. As the Hindsight Quickstart puts it, “The retain operation is used to push new memories into Hindsight.” Retention sends information to Hindsight, where an LLM extracts key facts, temporal details, entities, and relationships. Recall searches stored memories that may matter to a query. Reflect generates an insight from stored material rather than simply returning a matching item.

Four kinds of retained information

The Hindsight overview describes several kinds of memory:

  • World facts: objective claims, such as a user’s stated location or preference.
  • Experiences: actions or events associated with the bank, such as a completed task.
  • Observations: beliefs consolidated from evidence across memories.
  • Mental models or knowledge pages: curated or evolving summaries that organize what is known.

These categories help explain why memory is more than a transcript archive: the system can extract facts and relationships and maintain higher-level summaries.

How recall searches

Hindsight’s quick-start documentation says recall combines four parallel strategies: semantic vector similarity, BM25 keyword matching, graph relationships, and temporal filtering. That combination is intended to find information even when a new question uses different wording, refers to connected entities, or depends on when something happened.

Choose where memory lives and how the application uses it

Hindsight documents both a managed Cloud service and self-hosting. Its project quick start describes Docker as a route to a local API and UI, with Python, JavaScript, and Go clients also available. For current installation details and backend options, use the Hindsight repository and Quickstart; integration and provider names can change.

There are two broad integration patterns. A framework provider can hook memory into an agent’s lifecycle so recall occurs before a run and retention after it. With lower-level SDK or API calls, the application controls when to recall and retain. The provider route is convenient when using a supported framework; direct operations offer more control over what gets saved and when.

Memory is organized in banks, which Hindsight says are isolated from one another. Decide whether the bank represents a user, an agent, or another scope. Information that should carry between a person’s runs needs a consistent bank identifier; using a new identifier each time effectively points the application at a different memory space.

Set up Hindsight with Microsoft Agent Framework

The documented integration guide uses the hindsight-agent-framework package and a HindsightProvider. Before following code examples, check the guide for current package instructions, credentials, and backend configuration: Microsoft Agent Framework memory with Hindsight.

  1. Install the integration package. Add hindsight-agent-framework to the project using the installation instructions in the official guide.
  2. Configure a backend. Supply a Hindsight Cloud API key, or configure the provider to use a self-hosted Hindsight backend.
  3. Attach the provider to the agent. The guide’s example uses HindsightProvider(bank_id="user-123") in the agent’s context_providers. Use an identifier that remains stable for the memory scope you intend.
  4. Run the agent normally. The provider recalls relevant memories before the run and retains the user input together with the assistant’s response afterward.

This lifecycle integration is useful when the desired behavior is “retrieve prior context, answer, then save this exchange.” Applications with stricter privacy or memory-selection requirements should decide what content is appropriate to retain rather than assuming every interaction belongs in long-term memory.

Verify that the assistant remembers across runs

Use the same bank for both interactions. The integration guide’s verification flow is to give the assistant a preference or fact, start another run, then ask about or act on that earlier detail and inspect whether the response reflects it.

  1. Run the agent with a distinctive preference or fact to retain.
  2. Start a separate run with the same configured bank_id.
  3. Ask a question or give an instruction that requires the earlier information.
  4. Check whether the response uses the detail appropriately. If it does not, confirm the bank, backend credentials or configuration, and provider attachment.

The guide identifies three common setup failures: changing the bank ID between runs, omitting credentials or backend configuration, and failing to attach the provider. If those settings are correct but retrieval is still unsuitable, examine whether the detail was actually retained and whether the later request gives recall enough context to find it.

How to interpret Hindsight’s benchmark figures

When accessed in 2026, Hindsight’s overview displayed retrieval-accuracy figures of 94.6% for LongMemEval-S and 92.0% for LoComo. It also displayed 86.6% for PersonaMem, 85.7% for PrecisionMemBench, 71.5% for LifeBench, and 64.1% for BEAM · 10M tokens. The overview does not state the publication year or full benchmark configuration alongside those numbers, so they should be read as current vendor-displayed results, not as a guarantee of performance for a particular application.

The Hindsight repository says its benchmark performance was independently reproduced by collaborators at Virginia Tech’s Sanghani Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics and The Washington Post, while scores for competing systems may be self-reported. The overview also presents “next best system” comparisons, but a direct comparison is only meaningful when the benchmark definitions, models, evaluation settings, and dates align. The linked benchmark results and the ACL Anthology paper provide further technical context; do not infer that a displayed score predicts how well a specific assistant will remember a particular user.

Which approach fits your assistant?

Decision Option Use it when
Hosting Hindsight Cloud managed service You want a managed backend rather than operating the memory service yourself.
Hosting Self-host Hindsight You want to run the service locally or on your own infrastructure; Docker is the documented quick-start route.
Integration Framework lifecycle provider You use a supported framework and want recall before a run and retention afterward.
Integration Lower-level SDK or API operations Your application should explicitly control recall and retention.
Memory scope Bank per user, agent, or other scope You need to decide which information should persist together and be available across which runs.

The documentation cited here does not establish a stable price, so compare current service terms directly before choosing a deployment. No hardware purchase is required by the documented integration: Hindsight is a software memory layer, and self-hosting is an infrastructure choice rather than a specific product recommendation.
