A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Give an AI agent its own accountable identity, grant it only the tool and data access its task requires, and enforce permissions in application code—not in the model’s instructions. Keep high-impact actions behind fresh human approval, limit sensitive data in outputs and logs, and make revocation something you have tested. These controls can contain the damage from errors or prompt injection; they cannot guarantee that prompt injection will be prevented.
What does safe access look like?
An agent that can use email, shared files, business applications, databases, or other work tools can act on data and systems on a user’s behalf. Treat each connection as a security boundary. The model may choose a tool call, but a separate, deterministic layer should decide whether that exact action on that exact resource is authorized.

That distinction matters because an agent can be steered by user input, retrieved documents, or tool output. A malicious instruction inside otherwise ordinary content might try to redirect an approved tool toward an unintended target. Narrow permissions and runtime checks limit what the agent can do if that happens; a prompt or model setting alone is not a dependable security boundary.

-
Define the job and its boundaries
Write down the agent’s purpose, accountable owner, who may initiate work, approved data sources, required tools, deployment environment, and actions it must never take. Include plugins, third-party tools, MCP servers, context providers, and memory stores in the inventory. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet treats these integrations as part of the agent attack surface.

-
Give the agent a distinct identity
Create a dedicated agent or workload identity with a named, accountable sponsor. Do not embed a person’s long-lived password or reuse a shared service credential: either makes it harder to attribute activity and revoke access cleanly. When the agent acts for a person, bind the authorization decision to that initiating user and task rather than treating the agent’s identity as blanket permission.
-
Grant the smallest usable scope
Limit access by tool, resource, operation, initiating user or task, and duration. Separate read from write permissions, and prefer read-only access when retrieval is all the job needs. Avoid a broad tool that combines unrelated capabilities such as searching, exporting, and deleting. Use scoped, short-lived credentials or just-in-time access where supported; remove unused grants and review effective access as the workflow changes.

Microsoft Learn’s “Secure agents: Identity, access, and data protection” (updated July 14, 2026) summarizes this principle: “An agent should hold only the permissions it needs to complete its task, and nothing more.” That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee supplied by any particular identity product.

Authorize each tool call outside the model
Before a tool runs, application code should validate the requested operation and target against policy. Check arguments against allowlists, expected types, permitted ranges and lengths, and resource boundaries. For database, shell, or file tools, use parameterized queries and explicit path checks rather than passing model-generated strings through unchecked.

Microsoft Learn’s “Agent Safety” guidance (updated August 25, 2026) says to treat LLM-provided arguments as untrusted input, similar to user input in a web API. A well-written system prompt does not replace input validation or authorization.
-
Require approval in proportion to the impact
Keep narrow, low-impact, read-only work moving without needless prompts where policy allows. Require a fresh human confirmation before an agent sends something externally, changes or deletes records, makes a purchase, deploys, changes permissions, or bulk-exports sensitive information. The approval screen should identify the action and target clearly enough for the reviewer to understand what will happen. A model’s confidence is not authorization.

Protect the data and context the agent can reach
Check permissions in source systems before connecting them; an agent can legitimately retrieve content that has already been overshared. Preserve the initiating user’s access boundaries, review sharing and labels, and use data classification, DLP, and output controls where available. Treat retrieved text and persisted sessions as potentially sensitive, and minimize sensitive content in long-lived memory and production logs.

Log activity and rehearse revocation
Record the agent identity, user and task context, tool, action, target, scope, authorization result, and approval where relevant. Alert on unusual access or volume, while avoiding unnecessary storage of full message content. Test how to disable the identity, revoke tokens, rotate secrets, and remove downstream grants. Reassess permissions when the workflow, connected tool, data, or environment changes.

Which failures should your controls contain?
| Failure mode | Controls to apply |
|---|---|
| A shared or broad identity accumulates access across systems | Use a dedicated identity and named owner; scope and review grants; test revocation. |
| Prompt injection steers an approved tool toward an attacker’s goal | Treat user and retrieved content as untrusted; narrow tools and targets; validate arguments; authorize each action independently; require approval for consequential operations. |
| A permitted retrieval exposes content that was already overshared | Review source permissions and labels, preserve user boundaries, and apply classification and output controls. |
| Tool arguments enable injection or path traversal | Use allowlists and type, range, and length checks; confine file paths; use parameterized database queries. |
| Logs or saved sessions become another sensitive-data store | Minimize stored content, avoid production traces of full messages, and secure access to serialized sessions. |
| Access remains active after a workflow change or incident | Inventory owners and integrations, review access after material changes, monitor activity, and rehearse pausing the agent and invalidating credentials. |
How can you compare implementation options?
Do not choose an approach solely because it uses a particular vendor or describes itself as agent-ready. Compare the capabilities that determine whether access is attributable, constrained, checked, and recoverable:
- Identity: Can you attribute activity to a distinct agent identity and bind delegated actions to the initiating user?
- Scope: Can you restrict individual tools, resources, and operations rather than granting broad application access?
- Duration and revocation: Can credentials expire or be granted just in time, and can you quickly invalidate them and downstream permissions?
- Runtime enforcement: Is authorization for the exact action and target enforced deterministically outside the model?
- Data controls: Can you govern source permissions, classify data, and control sensitive outputs?
- Approvals: Can policy require clear human confirmation for sensitive, bulk, external, or irreversible actions?
- Audit and recovery: Can you see what the agent did and test how to stop it?
The reviewed guidance supports these as evaluation criteria, not a vendor ranking. Microsoft’s examples describe its own services and controls; apply equivalent capabilities in your chosen environment and verify current product support before deployment.
What do current guidance and standards establish?
OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet addresses least privilege, tool security, prompt injection, memory and context, human approval, monitoring, and data protection. Microsoft Learn’s identity, least-privilege, and agent-safety guidance offers implementation advice for its own ecosystem, including identity scope and tool-call validation.
