Before enabling access, decide how an authorized operator will revoke it; afterward, verify access against the resource and review the audit records. The exact steps depend on the cloud provider, credential type, and agent runtime.
Plan the access before connecting the agent
Treat an agent like any other workload that can call tools: its permissions determine what those tools can do at runtime. A separate identity makes its actions easier to scope, audit, and disable than a shared administrator account or a human user’s credentials.

- Identify the actor and target. Record which agent runtime will act, which cloud resources it needs, and whether it will use its own workload identity or act with delegated user authority. These are different authorization models; delegated authority can expose the agent to permissions belonging to the user.
- Define the task’s minimum permissions. List the required actions and target resources. Separate read from write, delete, and administrative actions rather than granting a broad role for convenience.
- Choose an identity and time limit. Prefer role assumption, workload identity federation, managed identity, or service-account impersonation over distributing a long-lived access key. For elevated access, define an end time or time-bound activation.
- Prepare the rollback and evidence. Identify the operator allowed to revoke access, the exact identity or session to target, any other grants that could still authorize access, and the audit records to check. Consider whether a broad revocation could interrupt unrelated workloads.
For high-impact actions, add a human approval or policy check before the tool call executes. A short-lived credential limits how long that credential can be used; it does not by itself make the permissions narrow or guarantee that every other grant has expired.

These mechanisms are not interchangeable. Credential lifetime, entitlement duration, early revocation behavior, and audit detail depend on the provider and the specific API or configuration.

| Provider | Workload identity pattern | Time limit | Early revocation and scope | Audit considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWS | Assume an IAM role and use AWS Security Token Service (STS) temporary credentials rather than embedding a long-lived access key. | For the temporary credential context described in AWS documentation, the minimum is 900 seconds (15 minutes), the maximum is 129,600 seconds (36 hours), and the default is 43,200 seconds (12 hours). Limits depend on the selected API and role configuration. | A role-session deny can target sessions issued before a cutoff; AWS also documents approaches for targeting a particular session. The cutoff procedure affects all sessions of that role issued before the cutoff, so a shared role can widen the impact. Resource-based allows may require an explicit deny as well. | AWS documents CloudTrail logging for its temporary delegation revocation procedure. Check the role and relevant resource policies when reviewing whether access remains possible. |
| Google Cloud | Allow an authenticated principal to impersonate a service account with the required roles; impersonation issues short-lived credentials without distributing a service-account key. | Not stated as a single duration in Google Cloud’s temporary elevated access guidance; check the selected API and credential type. | Grant the service account only the roles and resource access needed. A single universal early-revocation behavior is not stated in the cited guidance; check the relevant credential and IAM configuration. | Google documents audit entries for service-account impersonation that can identify the relevant identities. Service audit coverage can depend on the credential type and service. |
| Microsoft Azure and Entra | For supported Azure-hosted workloads, use a managed identity; Microsoft also describes workload identity for agent tool execution. Scope role assignments to the smallest suitable resource boundary. | Microsoft Entra PIM eligible role activation has a maximum of eight hours in the cited API overview, with lower limits configurable in role settings. This is not a general Azure token lifetime. Entra access packages for agent identities can have start and end dates. | Use time-bound role activation or access-package access where appropriate. The cited guidance does not establish one universal early-revocation behavior for every Azure identity and grant; check the applicable role assignments and other access paths. | Microsoft agent guidance recommends auditing actions. The cited guidance does not specify a single audit event format that applies to every agent tool or Azure service. |
AWS: use a role, then choose revocation scope carefully
AWS STS temporary credentials are dynamically issued and stop working after expiration, according to AWS’s temporary-credentials documentation. The durations in the table apply to the documented credential context, not to every AWS API or role setup. Check the operation and role configuration you actually use.
Revoke an ordinary role session
AWS documents denying sessions issued before a chosen cutoff with the aws:TokenIssueTime condition, as well as policy approaches that target a specific session. The role-session cutoff procedure is broad: it affects sessions for that role issued before the cutoff and may require users or clients to obtain new credentials. Avoid applying a role-wide deny to a shared role without accounting for other sessions.

Also check resource-based policies. AWS notes that a resource-based allow may need an explicit deny to prevent access through that path. Policy changes can take a few minutes to take effect, so do not treat the policy edit alone as proof that a request is blocked. Review the role’s other resource policies and session users before choosing a cutoff.
Do not confuse temporary delegation revocation with STS session revocation
AWS separately documents a revoke operation for temporary delegation sessions and CloudTrail logging for that procedure. It is not necessarily the same mechanism as denying ordinary STS role sessions; confirm which credential or delegation type the agent uses before following a revocation path.

Google Cloud: impersonate a service account instead of sharing its key
Google Cloud’s temporary elevated access guidance describes granting an authenticated principal permission to impersonate a service account that has the desired roles. The agent’s access then comes through short-lived impersonated credentials rather than a distributed service-account key. Assign only the roles needed for the task, and check the selected API’s credential lifetime and IAM requirements.
Impersonation audit records can identify the relevant identities. Confirm that the services the agent calls have the audit coverage you need; the identity information and coverage depend on credential type and service.

Azure and Entra: separate workload identity from time-bound elevation
For a workload hosted on Azure, a managed identity can provide tokens without developers managing secrets when the hosting service supports it. Azure role assignments can be scoped at the resource, resource group, subscription, or management-group level. Prefer the smallest scope that permits the required task.

The cited PIM API overview sets an eight-hour maximum for the documented eligible Microsoft Entra role activation, with lower maximums configurable in role settings. That limit applies to this activation mechanism, not to Azure tokens generally. For AI agent identities, Microsoft access packages can specify a start and end date, with access expiring automatically unless extended.

Microsoft’s agent guidance emphasizes scoping permissions by tool: a tool that reads data need not inherit the agent’s ability to change or delete it. Put approval or a policy check in front of high-impact actions and retain an audit trail of the agent’s actions.
Revoke access and verify that the task is closed
- Stop new work. Disable or pause the agent workflow so it does not continue making requests while access is being removed.
- Remove or expire the authorization. Use the provider’s revocation or deactivation mechanism for the actual identity, role session, activation, or access package in use. If the agent has other resource-level grants, address those too.
- Account for scope and propagation. Check whether the chosen action affects only one session or also other sessions, users, or workloads. Allow for documented policy propagation delay; AWS says its relevant policy changes may take a few minutes.
- Test a representative request. From the relevant agent identity or credential path, try a request to the protected resource that should now be denied. A removed local token cache is not sufficient evidence that cloud-side authorization has been revoked.
- Review the audit trail. Confirm the identity that acted, the authorizing principal, requested resource and action, time bounds, approvals, and the resulting access or denial event where the service records it.
Record the result and any remaining grants. If a request still succeeds, investigate other role assignments, resource policies, delegated user authority, or credentials before declaring the access removed.
Keep the record useful for the next task
- Agent or workload identity and the person or system that authorized it.
- Granted actions, resource scope, and any separate read, write, delete, or administrative permissions.
- Credential or entitlement type, start time, end time, and approval conditions.
- Revocation method, required operator permissions, expected blast radius, and verification request.
- Relevant audit records and any remaining access path discovered during verification.
This information makes it possible to distinguish an expired credential from an authorization that was actually removed, and to investigate why access remained if the verification request was still allowed.
