To make an AI agent useful in production incident response, give it a current, incident-specific view of the service, its telemetry and dependencies, relevant operational knowledge, and only the tool permissions it needs. Then validate any proposed change outside the model and check whether the incident actually improves. Context engineering is the discipline of assembling and updating that evidence; it is not a guarantee that an agent can safely repair every failure.
What context engineering means for AI SRE
In this setting, context engineering means selecting, organizing and refreshing the evidence an AI agent needs to investigate a production problem and, where permitted, help mitigate it. The term is a useful description of the work, not a universally standardized technical specification.

The key distinction is between operational knowledge and live system state. A runbook can explain how a service is intended to behave, but it cannot establish whether the service is healthy now, which deployment just changed it, or whether a dependency is failing. A useful incident context connects the alert to current observability data and the system around it.

Google SRE’s May 28, 2026 engineering article describes an approach that combines observability with system topology, taxonomy and dependency data before agents form hypotheses or propose mitigations. Its detailed AI operations paper describes agents drawing on deterministic enrichers, playbooks, specialized skills and investigation examples. These are examples of one organization’s design, not proof that the same architecture or results apply everywhere.

What should an AI agent know about an incident?
Start with a compact incident packet, then let the agent retrieve additional evidence as its investigation develops. Include enough information to orient the agent and constrain its reasoning without dumping an unfiltered archive of logs or documentation into every prompt.
- Alert and scope: alert text, firing time, affected service, severity, environment and known customer impact.
- Current health evidence: relevant logs, metrics and traces, with timestamps and links or identifiers that let the agent retrieve more detail.
- System relationships: service topology, upstream and downstream dependencies, ownership and relevant service taxonomy.
- Recent changes: deployments, configuration changes and other events that may explain a change in behavior.
- Operational guidance: applicable runbooks, known-safe mitigation actions and specialized investigation procedures.
- Relevant history: prior incidents and their verified causes or outcomes, clearly marked as historical rather than current evidence.
- Tool boundary: the agent’s identity, available tools and permissions, including which operations are read-only and which can change production.
Preserve provenance and timestamps for each item. This lets an agent distinguish a current signal from old incident notes, and a direct observation from an inferred explanation. Keep the initial packet small enough to review; retrieve deeper context when a hypothesis makes it relevant.
How should an AI agent investigate and act?
A self-healing workflow should separate investigation from production mutation. The agent can gather evidence, test hypotheses and recommend an action; a distinct control layer should decide whether that action is permitted and safe to execute.

- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.
- Enrich the alert. Resolve the service, ownership, severity, topology and relevant telemetry for the incident.
- Form and test hypotheses. Compare current evidence with recent changes, dependencies, runbooks and verified examples from past incidents. Ask for more data when the evidence does not distinguish competing explanations.
- Propose a bounded response. The recommendation should identify the intended target, rationale, expected effect and relevant operational risk.
- Validate outside the model. An actuation control plane can apply policy and safety checks before any mutation. Google’s AI operations paper describes a separate Mitigation Safety Verification Agent / Actuation Agent, with checks such as dry runs, confirming the action targets an open incident and checking for concurrent actions. This is Google’s system design, not a universal implementation requirement.
- Execute only at the permitted autonomy level. Require review for high-impact operations; reserve automatic execution for narrowly bounded cases whose risks and recovery paths are understood.
- Verify the outcome. Check whether the alert clears and whether relevant service signals recover. If it does not, investigate again or escalate rather than treating a completed tool call as proof of a fix.
Google describes this pattern in its AI Operator paper: the agent investigates alerts and tests hypotheses, critical mitigations require human review, minor incidents may be handled with greater autonomy, and cases outside safe boundaries or without a diagnosis are escalated. The paper also says the system can investigate again when an alert does not clear after mitigation.
How does OpenTelemetry Context differ from agent context?
OpenTelemetry uses Context for a narrower instrumentation purpose. Its specification says: “A Context is a propagation mechanism which carries execution-scoped values across API boundaries and between logically associated execution units.” The specification marks Context stable and requires it to be immutable: writing a value returns a new Context.
That API helps carry execution-scoped values through related operations. It does not, by itself, define how to construct an AI prompt, retrieve incident history, manage agent memory or design operational knowledge. An AI SRE system may use OpenTelemetry data and propagation, but its broader incident context requires separate engineering.

How do you keep the agent observable?
Instrument the agent as well as the service. Otherwise, an incident review may show that a response was wrong without revealing whether the problem came from missing evidence, retrieval, model reasoning, a tool failure or a policy decision.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Logs: retain prompts and responses where policy permits, tool inputs and results, safety-policy decisions, errors and escalation reasons.
- Traces: record the sequence of investigation steps, retrievals and tool calls so a reviewer can reconstruct how the agent reached an action.
- Metrics: track latency, token and resource use, tool outcomes, policy events and operational quality measures.
- Evaluation records: connect agent runs to human-reviewed incident examples and the expected diagnosis or safe response.
Google Cloud’s agent observability documentation identifies LLM interactions, tool use, agent behavior, performance, safety and quality as monitoring areas. It describes Application Monitoring dashboards and topology maps, metrics derived from trace data following OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions, and prompt/response data used for evaluation. This is one vendor’s implementation example; the monitoring categories are useful independently of that platform.

Evaluate the whole operational path, not just whether an answer sounds plausible. Use representative incidents reviewed by people who understand the service, and assess both diagnosis quality and the safety and result of any action. Google’s paper describes comparing agent behavior with human-verified “Golden Data” and storing execution traces for debugging and improvement.

- Did the agent identify the affected service and gather sufficiently current, relevant evidence?
- Were its hypotheses supported by telemetry and system relationships, and did it request more evidence when needed?
- Did it select an applicable runbook or known-safe action rather than overgeneralizing from a superficially similar past incident?
- Were tool calls, permissions, policy checks and action rationale traceable?
- Did the action remain within its authorized scope, and was there a workable rollback or human fallback?
- Did post-action verification show recovery, or did the workflow stop and escalate when it did not?
Google reports that its system has handled “thousands of incidents”; the page reviewed does not state a year for that figure or give an exact count or success rate. That scale statement should not be read as a general performance guarantee.
How do you introduce autonomy without overreaching?
Stage autonomy according to demonstrated operating fit, rather than a marketing claim or a single successful demonstration. Begin with evidence gathering and recommendations. Consider narrowly scoped automatic actions only after repeated evaluation in clearly bounded incident classes, with a stop condition and a manual fallback.
- Use conventional deterministic automation where it already handles the task reliably; use probabilistic agent behavior where it adds practical value.
- Give the agent a distinct identity and least-necessary permissions. Separate read access from mutation privileges.
- Limit actions by service, operation and incident class, and validate every proposed mutation through controls outside the model.
- Keep human approval for high-impact changes and define when uncertainty or missing evidence requires escalation.
- Set reliability goals, preserve durable execution traces, and maintain backup response options.
Google’s design principles include strong agent identity, transparent action reasoning, continuous evaluation, reliability goals and backup options. Its paper describes autonomy levels, but does not establish a universal numerical threshold at which an organization should enable automatic remediation.
How should you compare AI SRE approaches?
Compare systems by whether they fit your production environment and controls, not by how much autonomy they claim. The following questions expose operational differences that a feature list can hide.
- Context: Can it combine fresh telemetry with topology, deployments, dependencies and relevant runbooks?
- Retrieval: Can you assess whether incident and playbook retrieval is relevant, current and sufficiently broad?
- Traceability: Can operators inspect the agent’s evidence, reasoning steps, tool calls and outcomes?
- Controls: Are identity, permissions, mutation boundaries, validation, rollback and escalation explicit?
- Evaluation: Can you test against representative incidents and connect runs to human-verified outcomes?
- Integration: Does it work with existing observability and incident-management systems without obscuring the underlying evidence?
The cited material supports these comparison criteria but does not establish a universal vendor ranking. Whatever implementation you choose, monitoring, incident response and postmortem/root-cause analysis remain core SRE practices. A mitigation can reduce impact without fixing the underlying cause, so the service team must decide whether follow-up diagnosis or permanent remediation is still needed.
