Give a local AI agent access only to the files and app actions its task requires, and enforce that limit outside the model with a sandbox, narrowly scoped permissions, and network controls. A prompt asking an agent to behave safely is not a substitute for limiting what its execution environment can reach.
To answer the practical question—“How do I safely give a local AI agent access to my files and apps?”—start by deciding what it needs, isolate that access, and test the boundary before using real data.

What actually makes a local AI agent risky?
An agent can use the files, credentials, network connections, and tools available to the environment in which its code runs. If that environment can read a private folder or call an app integration, the model’s instructions alone do not remove that capability. OpenAI’s Codex safety guidance describes sandboxing as the technical execution boundary and approval policy as the rule for actions that cross it: “Approvals and sandboxing work together.”

Think of access as several separate boundaries, not one permission switch:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
- Execution boundary: which host resources the agent process can reach.
- Filesystem boundary: which folders it can read or change.
- Network boundary: which destinations it can contact and transmit data to.
- App and tool boundary: what connected apps or MCP tools can do.
- Human review: which consequential actions require confirmation.
Each boundary addresses a different failure mode. A sandbox does not necessarily restrict an app integration; an app scope does not prevent a process from reading mounted files; and an approval prompt does not protect data that the agent can already access.
Set up access in a safe order
- Define the task and the data. Name the exact project folder, documents, and apps required. Exclude unrelated personal folders, password stores, browser profiles, and configuration files containing secrets.
- Choose an enforced isolation boundary. Prefer an OS-enforced sandbox or virtual machine over prompt-only rules. Confirm which resources the boundary actually isolates in the tool you use.
- Limit file access. For analysis, use a read-only mount where possible. For editing, work in a disposable clone or dedicated workspace with version history and backups. Check hidden files and symlinks in the shared tree: a restricted environment cannot protect files that are deliberately or accidentally made reachable inside its boundary.
- Set network rules independently. Start with network access disabled or deny-by-default, then allow only the destinations needed for the task. Review broad wildcard rules. Web pages and tool results fetched from outside the environment are untrusted input, not instructions that should override your controls.
- Keep credentials out of reach where possible. Avoid placing long-lived secrets in files the agent can read. Use narrowly scoped credentials, and use a credential proxy or host-side injection if the platform supports it. Docker documents a proxy that can add authentication headers to outbound requests without exposing the raw credential values inside its sandbox VM (Docker Sandboxes security model).
- Grant app permissions conservatively. Begin with read-only access if it is available. Require human confirmation for actions such as sending, deleting, purchasing, or publishing when the integration supports approval. App scopes, agent approval prompts, and OS isolation are distinct controls.
- Inspect local integrations. Find out where each MCP server runs and what it exposes. Review its source or provenance, command, arguments, environment variables, and available tools. Do not assume a local server runs inside the agent’s VM: Docker warns, “Treat local MCP servers as trusted host integrations,” because its local stdio servers run on the host outside the sandbox VM (Docker Sandboxes security model).
- Test before using sensitive data. Use harmless sample files. Verify that prohibited paths are inaccessible, unapproved network requests fail, intended tools still work, and approval prompts appear for consequential operations. A product name or configuration file is not proof that the running boundary behaves as expected.
- Review and revoke. Inspect file diffs, app audit trails, and network activity where available. Revoke app access after the task and remove temporary credentials or mounts.
Choose file access that fits the task
| Access mode | What it means | Best fit and main caution |
|---|---|---|
| No host files | The agent cannot access host files through the configured environment. | Useful when the task needs no local documents; verify that integrations or other mounts do not reintroduce access. |
| Read-only files or mount | The agent can inspect selected data but cannot write to that shared location. | Good for summarizing or analyzing documents. Check whether hidden files and linked paths are included. |
| Private clone | The agent works on a separate copy rather than changing the original workspace. | Useful for code or document edits that need review before adoption. Keep the original and a recovery path. |
| Live read-write mount | Changes made by the agent appear in the shared host workspace. | Use only for a dedicated, backed-up project. Mistakes can affect the host copy immediately. |
These terms are not interchangeable. Docker’s local sandbox documentation distinguishes direct mounts, whose changes appear on the host in real time, from clone mode, where the repository is mounted read-only and the agent works on a private clone (Docker Sandboxes security model). Check the behavior of your own platform rather than assuming that “sandbox” means files are copied or read-only.

Keep network access and credentials separate from file permissions
Restricting file access does not stop an agent from sending data it can read over an allowed network connection. Conversely, disabling the network does not make an overly broad file mount safe. Set both boundaries deliberately: permit only necessary destinations, and avoid credentials with permissions beyond the task.
Where a platform offers a host-side credential proxy, it can keep raw secret values outside the sandbox while allowing approved requests. This reduces exposure of the secret itself, but it does not make every request safe: a permitted request may still send data, so outbound destinations and actions require their own limits.

Govern app and MCP access as a separate boundary
Connected apps and MCP tools may carry permissions that are broader than the files visible to the agent. Grant only the scopes needed, prefer read-only operations at first, and keep a person in the loop for irreversible or externally visible actions. Review the actual tools exposed by each server, not just its name.
Server location matters. A local MCP server can run as a host process and inherit host permissions, even if the agent itself runs in a VM. Docker documents this host-run exception in its security model. Treat such a server like other software installed on the host: review what it executes and what capabilities it makes available.

How to compare sandbox approaches
Compare implementations by the controls they enforce in the configuration you will actually run, rather than by the product label.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Control to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Isolation boundary | Are restrictions prompt-only, process or container controls, or an OS-enforced VM boundary? |
| Filesystem scope | Are host files excluded, read-only, copied into a private clone, or exposed through a live read-write mount? |
| Network policy | Is access disabled, deny-by-default with an allowlist, or broadly available? Can policy be enforced at the outbound proxy? |
| Credential handling | Are raw secrets visible to the agent, or can it use scoped credentials or host-side injection? |
| App and MCP governance | Are permissions narrow? Can consequential tools require approval? Where does each server execute? |
| Review and recovery | Can you inspect prompts, logs, file changes, and audit trails? Can you revert changes and revoke access easily? |
Docker Sandboxes document a local microVM approach with workspace, network, credential-proxy, and MCP controls (Docker Sandboxes). Those features are implementation details to compare, not a guarantee that every setup is secure. OpenAI’s discussion of agent sandboxes also emphasizes separating the harness from the compute sandbox and keeping authentication, billing, audit logging, human review, and recovery state outside the container where appropriate (OpenAI: Why we built Codex Cloud). Apply the same scrutiny to whichever platform you choose: inspect the configured boundary and test it in practice.

Check these failure points before trusting a setup
- A shared folder is writable: use a read-only mount for analysis, or a disposable clone and backups for editing.
- Hidden files or symlinks expose more than intended: inspect the mounted tree and verify which targets are reachable from the agent environment.
- Network access is broader than expected: start deny-by-default, remove unnecessary wildcard rules, and test that blocked destinations fail.
- A credential appears in a readable file or environment variable: remove it from the agent’s view and use a scoped credential or proxy when supported.
- An app can write or publish without review: reduce its scopes or disable consequential actions until a human confirmation path is available.
- A local tool runs on the host: treat it as a host integration, inspect its command and permissions, and do not assume VM isolation contains it.
