Use Playwright MCP as the browser layer, but do not make screenshots the agent’s control surface. After every navigation or page-changing action, request a fresh browser_snapshot and use its accessibility-tree refs for clicks and typing. Call browser_take_screenshot only when the agent needs visual evidence: layout, canvas or chart content, visual regressions, or a human-readable debugging artifact. This separation prevents pixel-based guessing and eliminates most stale-reference failures.
The dependable loop is: act, re-snapshot, resolve dialogs, capture the smallest useful image, and record exactly how it was captured. The sections below show the setup, capture choices, failure recovery, local-versus-remote deployment trade-offs, and a hosted alternative.

The reliable division of labor
A computer-use agent receives two different kinds of browser evidence, and each has a different job.

Playwright’s guidance is explicit: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” A screenshot can show where a button appears, but the snapshot supplies the structured target the agent should operate.

Set up a Playwright MCP browser
Launch the documented local server
The official getting-started command launches the local server with the latest package:
npx @playwright/mcp@latestAdd that command to your MCP client’s server configuration. The client then exposes Playwright navigation, form, storage, tracing, video and screenshot capabilities to the agent. Keep the browser process and the agent in the same session when the task depends on cookies, login state or a page reached through several steps.
Choose the browser and capabilities deliberately
Playwright MCP supports Chromium, Firefox, WebKit and Edge. Select the engine that matches the site you are diagnosing rather than assuming that one engine represents every user. Optional capability groups, including vision, PDF and devtools, can be enabled with --caps. Expose only the groups the agent needs: a smaller tool surface makes accidental actions less likely and simplifies auditing.

- Start the MCP server and confirm that the client discovers the Playwright tools.
- Open a simple page and request a
browser_snapshot. - Perform one harmless action, such as following a link, and request another snapshot.
- Capture a viewport screenshot and confirm that the image is returned in the format and scale you requested.
If the client cannot discover the tools, fix the MCP process or configuration before debugging page logic. A screenshot cannot compensate for a browser session that never started correctly.
A capture loop that survives page changes
Use this sequence for every task that mixes interaction and visual evidence:

- Navigate or act. Use Playwright’s navigation and interaction tools to open the URL, submit a form, scroll, select a tab or change state.
- Take a fresh snapshot. Navigation and other page-changing actions invalidate old accessibility refs. Never reuse a ref from before the action.
- Find the target on large pages. Use
browser_findwhen the snapshot is too large to scan. If a cookie dialog, modal or permission prompt is open, resolve it before continuing. - Decide whether a screenshot is necessary. Keep the snapshot for routine reading and interaction. Request an image only for visual information the accessibility tree cannot represent.
- Capture the narrowest useful area. Prefer an element screenshot for a chart, card, dialog or component. Use a viewport shot for what is currently visible and
fullPage:trueonly when below-the-fold content matters. - Record the capture contract. Return a deterministic filename or inline image, and record whether it is viewport, element or full-page, the output format, scale and relevant page state.
- Keep actions and image transport separate. If image delivery fails, do not silently turn that failure into a click decision. Re-snapshot and retry the visual request or continue with structured refs.
Viewport, element and full-page screenshots

browser_take_screenshot supports viewport, selected-element and full-scrollable-page capture. Choose PNG, JPEG or WebP explicitly. Use CSS scale for stable, compact dimensions; use device scale when the agent or reviewer needs high-resolution inspection. A high-resolution full-page image is rarely the right default for routine navigation.
Fresh refs are the cure for stale browser references
Playwright assigns refs in the accessibility tree. Those refs are tied to the page state from which the snapshot was produced. A navigation, route transition, dialog action or other page-changing operation can invalidate them. The safe pattern is therefore:

browser_snapshot againWhen an action reports that a ref is missing or no longer matches, do not keep retrying the old value. Take a new snapshot, use browser_find if the page is large, and check for an open dialog that changed the tree.
How to request visual evidence without making the agent brittle
For a visual bug
Ask the agent to reproduce the state with normal actions, take a fresh snapshot, resolve any dialogs, and then capture the affected element. Include the URL, viewport or device preset, output format, scale and the state-changing steps in the artifact metadata.
For a chart or canvas
Use the snapshot to reach the chart and identify its surrounding controls. Use an element screenshot for the rendered chart itself. Do not infer data values or click points from approximate pixel coordinates unless a separate, verified interaction method exists.

For a page review
Start with a viewport screenshot. If the decision concerns the complete document, request fullPage:true after the page has finished loading the content that matters. If only one card, table or dialog matters, avoid paying the token and transport cost of the rest of the page.

Token, latency and reliability trade-offs
Large screenshots consume more model input than compact snapshots. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance allows a model to request a screenshot when it needs visual context; remote MCP results arrive as mcp_call outputs in the Responses API. In practice, reserve images for visual decisions, canvas and chart inspection, visual regression evidence and human-readable debugging. Use snapshots for routine navigation, extraction and form work.
- Reduce image size first: choose an element or viewport capture, CSS scale and WebP or JPEG when lossless pixels are unnecessary.
- Keep full-page capture exceptional: it is appropriate when lower content changes the decision, not as a default after every action.
- Separate latency from correctness: a smaller image may arrive faster, but it must still include the visual feature being evaluated.
- Persist parameters: storing capture mode, format and scale lets a later reviewer reproduce the artifact.
Local Playwright MCP versus managed remote MCP
A local server gives you direct ownership of the browser process. A managed remote service can remove browser installation and provide cloud execution, but its operational terms must be checked before production use.

The agent says an element ref is stale
Cause: the page changed after the snapshot that produced the ref. Fix: take a new browser_snapshot, resolve any dialog, then act on the new ref. Never repair a stale ref by guessing a coordinate from a screenshot.

A click appears to do nothing
Cause: a modal, consent prompt or another overlay is still open, or the target moved after rendering. Fix: inspect a fresh snapshot, use browser_find on a large tree, close the blocking dialog, and retry with the current ref.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
Cause: the page has not reached the required state, content is below the viewport, or a visual element is rendered only after a later action. Fix: wait for the relevant state, snapshot again, and choose element or full-page capture according to the evidence needed. Do not infer that a blank image means the page is empty until the structured snapshot agrees.
The full-page image is enormous
Cause: full-page capture includes the complete scrollable document at an unnecessarily high scale. Fix: use an element or viewport screenshot, switch to CSS scale, or capture only the section that answers the question.
The image transport fails
Cause: the image response was not delivered even though browser state may still be valid. Fix: keep the action tools and screenshot tool separate, retry the image request, and use a fresh snapshot to verify state before any further interaction.
The local MCP server will not start
Cause: the MCP client cannot launch the configured command, the package is unavailable, or the client’s server definition is malformed. Fix: run npx @playwright/mcp@latest directly, confirm that it starts, then copy the working command into the client configuration. Add optional capability groups only after the basic server works.
A remote browser behaves differently from a local one
Cause: geography, network egress, browser engine, session handling or preview-service limits differ. Fix: compare those axes explicitly, reproduce with the same browser and state, and verify the managed service’s current terms before treating the difference as a site defect.
