How to gift games on Steam?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam lets you buy many games as gifts and send them directly to someone on your Steam friends list. Instead of sharing a code, the gift appears in the recipient’s Steam account, where they can accept it into their library or decline it.

The process is usually simple: choose the game, select “Purchase as a gift,” pick a friend, add a message, and send it immediately or schedule it for a later date. However, gifting is affected by rules around regions, price differences, existing ownership, bundles, refunds, and account limitations.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Knowing these restrictions before checkout can save you from failed purchases or unavailable gifting options. If a specific game cannot be gifted, Steam Gift Cards can often serve as a flexible alternative.

What You Need Before Gifting a Game on Steam

Before you can gift a game on Steam, you need a Steam account, access to the Steam Store, and a valid payment method. Steam gifts are sent through the purchasing process, so you cannot simply transfer a game that is already in your library to someone else. If you bought and redeemed a game for yourself, it stays tied to your account. To gift a game, you must buy a new copy from the Steam Store and choose the gift option during checkout.

The recipient must usually be on your Steam Friends list. When you select Purchase as a gift, Steam shows eligible friends who can receive that game. If the person is not listed, add them as a Steam friend first and make sure they accept the request. You should also confirm that you are selecting the correct account, especially if the recipient has a similar display name to someone else. Steam gifts are tied to accounts, not email addresses, once sent through the friend gifting system.

Basic requirements before buying

  • Your Steam account: You need to be signed in to the account that will pay for and send the gift.
  • A Steam friend: The recipient should be on your Friends list and able to receive gifts in their region.
  • A giftable product: Not every item on Steam can be gifted. Some bundles, subscriptions, free-to-play items, DLC, and region-restricted products may not show the gift option.
  • A payment method: You can use supported payment options such as credit card, PayPal where available, or Steam Wallet funds, depending on your country.
  • Recipient compatibility: If you are buying DLC, the recipient usually needs to own the base game on Steam before they can use it.

It is also worth checking the game’s store page before purchasing. Look at the operating system requirements, supported languages, mullayer region limitations, and whether the game uses extra third-party accounts or launchers. Steam will let you gift many games even if the recipient’s computer cannot run them, so hardware compatibility is something you may need to verify yourself. For DLC, soundtrack content, software, and special editions, read the purchase options carefully so you know exactly what the recipient will receive.

Regional rules can affect whether a gift can be sent or redeemed. Steam may block gifting when there is a large price difference between your country and the recipient’s country, or when a game is not available in the recipient’s region. This is one of the most common reasons the gifting option appears unavailable or a friend cannot be selected at checkout. If you are sending a gift internationally, check early in the checkout process rather than waiting until the final payment screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, make sure the timing and refund expectations are clear. Steam allows you to schedule delivery for a later date, but the gift still depends on Steam’s gifting rules at the time of purchase. If the recipient declines the gift, the purchase is typically refunded to the original payment method when possible. If they accept it, standard Steam refund rules apply, usually based on playtime and time since redemption. For recipients who may prefer to choose their own game, a Steam Gift Card can be a safer option.

How to Buy and Send a Steam Game as a Gift

To gift a game on Steam, you must buy a new copy from the Steam Store and send it to someone on your Steam friends list. You cannot gift games that are already in your own library, and you usually cannot send a Steam game to someone by email unless Steam offers that option during checkout. The normal gifting flow happens entirely inside Steam, from the store page to the recipient’s Steam account.

  1. Open the Steam client or go to the Steam Store in a web browser and sign in to your account.
  2. Find the game you want to gift using the search bar or store categories.
  3. Open the game’s store page and select Add to Cart.
  4. Go to your cart and choose Purchase as a gift instead of buying it for yourself.
  5. Select the Steam friend who should receive the game.
  6. Choose immediate delivery or set a scheduled delivery date if you want the gift sent later.
  7. Add an optional gift message, then continue to payment.
  8. Review the order details and complete the purchase.

After payment is approved, Steam sends the gift to the selected friend. If you chose immediate delivery, the recipient will receive a Steam notification and may also get an email depending on their account settings. They can then accept the gift, add the game to their library, and install it like any other Steam purchase. If they decline the gift, Steam normally returns the purchase to you as a refund to the original payment method or to your Steam Wallet, depending on how the order was paid and Steam’s refund handling for that transaction.

Choosing the Right Friend at Checkout

The recipient list at checkout shows eligible Steam friends. If the person you want to send the game to does not appear, confirm that they are on your friends list and that the game is available for gifting to their region. Steam may block the gift if there is a large regional price difference, if the game is restricted in the recipient’s country, or if the recipient already owns the same product. Bundles, DLC, soundtracks, and special editions can also behave differently depending on ownership and store rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before completing payment, check the game edition, recipient name, delivery timing, and price carefully. Steam purchases are account-based, so sending the wrong edition or choosing the wrong friend can create extra steps if you need to cancel or request a refund. For birthdays, holidays, or timed surprises, use Steam’s scheduled delivery option during checkout rather than buying the game for yourself first, since a game added to your own library cannot be transferred to another account later.

How to Schedule a Steam Gift for Later Delivery

Steam lets you buy a game gift now and have it delivered to a friend at a future date and time. This is useful for birthdays, holidays, launch-day surprises, or when you want to take advantage of a current sale without sending the gift immediately. The scheduling option appears during the gift checkout flow, after you choose to purchase the game for a Steam friend rather than for your own library.

To schedule delivery, add the game to your cart from the Steam store, choose Purchase as a gift, then select the recipient from your Steam friends list. On the gift details screen, Steam normally gives you two delivery choices: send the gift immediately or schedule it for a later date. Choose the scheduled delivery option, then select the date and approximate delivery time shown in Steam’s interface. You can also add a personal message, your name, and a gift sentiment before continuing to payment.

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and click Add to Cart.
  2. In your cart, select Purchase as a gift.
  3. Choose the Steam friend who should receive the game.
  4. Select the option to schedule delivery instead of sending immediately.
  5. Pick the delivery date and time available in Steam’s checkout screen.
  6. Add an optional message, then complete payment.

After checkout, the gift remains pending until the scheduled delivery time. Your friend will not receive the game right away, and it will not be added to their library until they accept it. When Steam delivers the gift, the recipient gets a notification in the Steam client and, depending on their account settings, may also receive an email. They can then accept the gift into their library or decline it.

Scheduled gifts still follow Steam’s normal gifting rules. The recipient must be on your Steam friends list, the game must be giftable in your region, and the recipient must be allowed to receive that title. If they already own the game by the time the gift is delivered, they may be unable to accept it. Regional price differences can also block gifting when the price gap between countries is too large, even if the friend appears in your list. In that case, Steam may prevent you from completing the purchase before the gift is scheduled.

You can review a scheduled gift before it is delivered from your Steam inventory or gift history area, depending on how Steam displays it on your account. If the gift has not been accepted, you may be able to cancel it and request a refund under Steam’s refund rules. Once the recipient accepts the game, refund options become more limited and usually require the recipient to initiate or approve the refund process as well.

If the scheduling option does not appear, check that you are buying a giftable game directly from Steam and not attempting to gift content that is restricted, bundled in a non-giftable way, already owned by the recipient, or unavailable for cross-region gifting. For maximum flexibility, especially when timing or regional restrictions are uncertain, a Steam Digital Gift Card can be a better alternative because your friend can receive wallet funds and choose the game themselves.

Steam Game Gifting Rules and Restrictions

Steam gifts are designed for sending newly purchased games directly to another Steam account, usually someone on your friends list. The biggest restriction is that you generally cannot gift games that are already in your own Steam Library. Once a game has been redeemed to your account, it is tied to that account and cannot be transferred, traded, or re-gifted to another user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You also need to choose the gift option during checkout. If you buy the game for yourself by mistake, Steam will add it to your library instead of creating a gift copy. In that case, your main option is usually to request a refund, if the purchase qualifies, and then buy the game again as a gift. Steam’s standard refund rules commonly require the request to be made within 14 days of purchase and with less than 2 hours of playtime, though approval is handled through Steam Support.

Regional and pricing restrictions

Steam may block gifting when there is a large regional price difference between the sender’s country and the recipient’s country. For example, if a game costs significantly less in your region than in your friend’s region, Steam may prevent the purchase from being sent as a gift. This is one of the most common reasons the gifting option appears unavailable or a selected friend cannot receive the game.

Some games also have region-specific versions or activation limits. A gift bought in one country may not be redeemable or playable in another, depending on the publisher’s settings. Steam usually shows a warning during checkout if a gift has country restrictions, so read the checkout messages carefully before completing the purchase.

  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

Account, friendship, and delivery limits

  • Friend requirement: Steam game gifts are typically sent to users on your Steam friends list, not to an email address as a transferable gift link.
  • Existing ownership: You usually cannot gift a game to someone who already owns that exact title on Steam. Bundles and editions can be more complicated if the recipient owns part of the content.
  • Inventory gifting: Most modern Steam game purchases are sent directly to the recipient and do not create a tradable inventory item.
  • Payment review: Steam may delay or block gifting if a payment method triggers fraud checks, chargeback concerns, or account security restrictions.
  • Limited accounts: Accounts with restrictions, recent security changes, or unusual activity may have fewer gifting options available.

Restrictions for bundles, DLC, and special editions

DLC can usually only be gifted to someone who owns the required base game. If your friend does not own the base game, Steam may prevent you from sending the DLC or warn that it cannot be used. For bundles, Steam may adjust pricing based on what the buyer owns, but gifting rules depend on the specific package. Some personalized bundles cannot be purchased as gifts because their price is calculated only for the buyer’s account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Special editions, upgrades, soundtracks, in-game currency, and subscription-style products may also have different gifting behavior. Before paying, check whether the checkout page says the item will be delivered as a gift and whether the recipient is eligible to receive it. If Steam does not offer the gift option for a specific product, it is usually due to publisher settings, ownership conflicts, regional limits, or the type of content being sold.

How to Check, Manage, or Cancel a Sent Gift

After you send a Steam gift, you can review its status from your account inventory or purchase history. This is useful if you scheduled the gift for a future date, sent it to the wrong friend, or want to confirm whether the recipient has accepted it. Steam gifts generally show as pending until the recipient accepts, declines, or the scheduled delivery time arrives.

Check the status of a Steam gift

To view a sent gift, open Steam and go to your account details or inventory. In the desktop client, click your profile name, choose Inventory, and look for the gift under your Steam items if it has not been accepted yet. You can also click your account name in the top-right corner, choose Account details, then open View purchase history to find the transaction. The purchase history page shows whether the gift was purchased, refunded, or still pending.

  • Pending: The gift has been sent or scheduled, but the recipient has not accepted it yet.
  • Accepted: The game has been added to the recipient’s Steam library and can no longer be redirected to someone else.
  • Declined: The recipient rejected the gift, and Steam typically begins the refund process automatically.
  • Scheduled: The gift is set to be delivered at a later date and may still be manageable before delivery.

Manage or cancel a pending Steam gift

If the gift has not been accepted, you may be able to cancel it from your inventory or gift management page. Open the pending gift, then look for options such as Manage gift, Resend gift, or Cancel gift. If you scheduled delivery for a birthday or holiday, you can usually cancel before Steam sends it. Once canceled, Steam returns the purchase according to the original payment method when eligible, rather than leaving a spare copy in your inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the recipient cannot find the gift notification, ask them to check the Steam client alerts, their email inbox if email notifications are enabled, and the Gifts section in Steam. You can also resend the gift notification when Steam provides that option. Make sure you sent it to the correct Steam friend account, especially if the person has mulle profiles or similar display names.

Refunds for sent gifts

Steam’s refund rules apply to gifts, but the process depends on whether the gift was accepted. If the recipient has not accepted the game, the sender can usually request or receive a refund after canceling or after the gift is declined. If the recipient has accepted it, both people may need to be involved: the recipient must approve the refund request, and the game must still meet Steam’s standard refund limits, generally less than two hours of playtime and within fourteen days of purchase.

To request a refund, go to Help in Steam, select Steam Support, choose Purchases, and select the gifted game transaction. Follow the prompts for refunding a gift. If the game was accepted, the recipient may need to start the refund request from their own account first, after which the sender can complete the refund process. Refunds normally return to the original payment method or to the sender’s Steam Wallet, depending on payment type and eligibility.

Common Problems When Gifting Games on Steam

Most Steam gifts go through without trouble, but a few account, store, and regional rules can stop the process before checkout or prevent the recipient from redeeming the game. If something looks wrong, first confirm that you are buying the game directly from the Steam Store, that the recipient is on your Steam friends list, and that the game is actually available for purchase in both your region and theirs.

The gift option is missing at checkout

If you do not see the option to buy a game as a gift, the product may not support Steam gifting. Some items, bundles, subscriptions, in-game currencies, soundtracks, DLC, and free-to-play content can have different purchase rules. DLC can also be tricky because the recipient usually needs to own the base game before they can receive or use it. If Steam only offers “Purchase for myself,” the publisher or Steam store setup may not allow that item to be sent as a gift.

The recipient is not listed

Steam gifts can usually be sent only to people on your Steam friends list. If your friend does not appear during checkout, make sure they have accepted your friend request and that you are using the correct account. New or limited Steam accounts may also have restricted community features until they meet Steam’s account requirements. If you recently added the person, signing out and back in or restarting the Steam client can help refresh the list.

Regional price or availability blocks the gift

Steam may block a gift when there is a large regional price difference between your store country and the recipient’s store country. A game may also be unavailable, censored, or sold as a different version in the recipient’s region. In these cases, Steam can prevent checkout or stop the recipient from accepting the gift. You cannot bypass this by changing the delivery date, and changing store regions without actually moving may violate Steam’s rules.

The recipient already owns the game

If your friend already owns the exact game package you are trying to send, Steam will normally warn you or prevent delivery. This can also happen with bundles where the recipient owns part of the included content. Depending on the bundle type, Steam may adjust the contents, block the purchase as a gift, or make the gift less useful than expected. Check the recipient’s wishlist or library status from their profile before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment, fraud, or account issues

Payment failures can happen if your card is declined, your billing details do not match, Steam detects unusual activity, or your account has purchase restrictions. Steam Wallet funds may work for many gifts, but payment availability can vary by region and account status. If a transaction is pending, avoid repeatedly trying the same purchase until Steam confirms whether it failed or completed, since mulle attempts can create temporary holds from your bank or payment provider.

Gift declined, expired, or refunded

If the recipient declines the gift, Steam usually returns the purchase to the sender according to the original payment method or Steam Wallet rules. If the gift is not accepted within Steam’s allowed window, it may expire and be returned as well. For accepted gifts, refunds generally follow Steam’s standard refund policy, including playtime and ownership limits, and the recipient usually needs to initiate the refund request for a redeemed game.

  • Check the store page: confirm the game supports gifting and is not restricted to personal purchase.
  • Check your friend list: make sure the recipient has accepted your request before checkout.
  • Check regional compatibility: price differences and local availability can block delivery.
  • Check ownership: avoid sending games, DLC, or bundles your friend cannot redeem or use.
  • Use a Steam Gift Card instead: when a specific game cannot be gifted, wallet credit lets the recipient buy it directly if it is available in their region.

Alternatives to Gifting a Specific Steam Game

If Steam will not let you gift a particular game, or you are unsure which title the recipient actually wants, there are several practical alternatives. These options are especially useful when the game has regional price restrictions, the recipient already owns the game, the item is not giftable, or you want to avoid choosing the wrong edition or DLC bundle.

Send a Steam Digital Gift Card

The most flexible alternative is a Steam Digital Gift Card. Instead of buying a specific game, you send Steam Wallet credit directly to a Steam friend. The recipient can then use the balance to buy games, DLC, in-game items, software, or discounted titles during a Steam sale. This is often the safest option when you are gifting across regions because the funds are converted to the recipient’s local currency when redeemed, subject to Steam’s current conversion rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send one, open the Steam store, search for Steam Digital Gift Cards, choose an amount, select a friend, add a message, and complete checkout. As with game gifts, the recipient usually needs to be on your Steam friends list. Digital Gift Cards are useful for birthdays, holidays, or situations where you know someone likes PC games but do not know their current wishlist priorities.

Buy a Physical Steam Gift Card

Physical Steam Gift Cards are another option if you prefer giving something in person. These are sold by many retailers and include a code that the recipient redeems into their Steam Wallet. They can be helpful for younger players, office gift exchanges, or cases where you do not want to connect through Steam friends first. Availability, denominations, and currency compatibility depend on the store and country, so check the card’s region terms before buying.

Use the Recipient’s Steam Wishlist

If you still want to give a specific game but are not sure which one to choose, the recipient’s Steam Wishlist can guide you. Open their Steam profile, view their wishlist if it is public or visible to friends, and look for games near the top. You can also watch for sale prices, deluxe editions, or bundles that include expansions. A wishlist does not bypass Steam’s normal gifting restrictions, but it reduces the chance of buying a game they do not want.

  • Steam Digital Gift Card: best for flexibility and cross-region uncertainty.
  • Physical Steam Gift Card: best for in-person gifts or recipients not yet connected as Steam friends.
  • Wishlist purchase: best when you want a personal gift but need help choosing the right title.
  • Ask for a few choices: best when editions, DLC, or hardware requirements are unclear.

You can also coordinate outside Steam by asking the recipient for two or three games they want, then purchasing one through Steam if it is giftable. This avoids spoiling the exact gift while still making sure the game works on their account and computer. For mullayer games, consider whether they need a base game, expansion, battle pass, or subscription-style content, since not every add-on can be gifted in the same way as a standard game.

When gifting is blocked by regional pricing, ownership conflicts, or publisher restrictions, Steam Wallet credit is usually the cleanest workaround. It gives the recipient control over timing, editions, and sales, while still keeping the gift within the Steam ecosystem. If your goal is to make sure they receive something usable, a gift card is often better than forcing a specific game purchase that may fail at checkout or be declined later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I gift a Steam game to someone who is not on my friends list?

No, Steam game gifts can only be sent directly to people on your Steam friends list. If the person is not listed, add them as a friend first and wait until they accept before buying the game as a gift. As an alternative, you can send them a Steam Gift Card if direct game gifting is not available.

Can I schedule a Steam gift to arrive on a birthday or holiday?

Yes, Steam lets you schedule a gift during checkout instead of sending it immediately. After choosing the recipient, select the option to schedule delivery and pick the date you want the gift to arrive. Steam will deliver the gift to the recipient on that date, as long as the purchase goes through successfully.

What happens if my friend already owns the game I want to gift?

Steam usually prevents you from sending a game to a friend who already owns it. If the gift is sent and the recipient cannot or does not accept it, the purchase can typically be refunded to the original payment method. You can check the gift status from your Steam inventory or purchase history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the option to gift a game unavailable on Steam?

The gifting option may be unavailable if the game, bundle, DLC, or preorder cannot be gifted. It can also happen because of regional restrictions, large price differences between countries, or because the recipient is not eligible to receive that item. In those cases, a Steam Gift Card is often the simplest workaround.

Can I refund a Steam game that I bought as a gift?

Yes, gifted games can be refunded if they meet Steam’s normal refund rules, usually under two hours of playtime and within 14 days of purchase. If the recipient has already accepted the gift, they must first approve the refund request. Once approved, the refund goes back to the original buyer’s payment method, not to the recipient.

Bottom Line

Gifting games on Steam is straightforward: choose the game, select “Purchase as a gift,” pick a Steam friend, and either send it right away or schedule delivery for a specific date. Before buying, double-check that the recipient can receive the game in their region and does not already own it.

If the gift option is unavailable or regional pricing blocks the purchase, a Steam Gift Card is usually the easiest backup. For the smoothest experience, add the recipient as a Steam friend ahead of time, confirm the game is eligible, and keep refund rules in mind if plans change.
