Make your WordPress site agent-ready by building a controlled path from discovery to action: expose a clean public API and sitemap, write pages that machines can parse, authenticate every private or write operation, and deliberately allow or block crawlers. Treat llms.txt as an optional supplement, not as the foundation.

The practical sequence is inventory, verify REST discovery, design least-privilege permissions, improve structured content, configure crawler policy, add MCP where your hosting supports it, and continuously test the real HTTP responses.

What “AI-agent ready” means for WordPress
An AI agent needs more than a page it can visually load. It must be able to discover your site, identify the content or capability it needs, interpret the response without guessing, and receive only the access its task requires. For a WordPress site, that normally means four separate layers:
- Discovery: the site advertises its REST API, routes, canonical URLs and sitemap.
- Interpretation: pages and JSON responses use stable names, headings, metadata and schemas.
- Authorization: anonymous reading is separated from authenticated data and every write action.
- Operations: crawler rules, logs, rate limits and tests keep the integration safe over time.
Do not equate “agent-ready” with allowing an assistant to log in as an administrator. A useful design lets an agent answer questions from public content while requiring a narrowly scoped identity for customer, order, editorial or other private work.

1. Inventory every WordPress surface before changing settings
Start with a complete list of what exists and what an external client should be able to do. Include standard posts and pages, custom post types, taxonomies, media, products, support articles, forms, account areas and custom REST routes. Mark drafts, private posts, customer records, order data, secrets and internal notes as non-public even if a plugin currently exposes them.

For each item, record whether the agent needs no access, public read access, authenticated read access or authenticated write access. This inventory becomes your permission model and prevents a convenience endpoint from quietly becoming a data-export channel.

WordPress advertises its REST API through a front-end Link header, and the /wp-json/ URL exposes an index of available routes. The official discovery guidance explains the header and index behavior at developer.wordpress.org/rest-api/using-the-rest-api/discovery/. Check the home-page Link header
From a machine outside your hosting network, request the home page headers:
curl -I https://example.com/Look for a Link value pointing to the REST index, commonly in the form <https://example.com/wp-json/>; rel="https://api.w.org/". A CDN, security layer or redirect that strips this header makes discovery less reliable, so test the final response that a client actually receives.
Inspect the API index
curl -sS https://example.com/wp-json/Confirm that the response is valid JSON, identifies the API namespace and lists the routes you intend to support. Do not assume that every installed route belongs in an agent integration. Review each route for authentication requirements, exposed fields, pagination, links and error behavior.

Inspect endpoint schemas
Endpoint schemas describe accepted inputs and outputs. They also provide a validation and sanitization layer, as the WordPress REST API documentation notes. For every route an agent will call, verify property types, required fields, allowed values, defaults, pagination limits and whether sensitive fields are omitted. A custom endpoint should be versioned, documented and consistent rather than returning a different shape after a plugin update.
The REST API reference distinguishes public data available anonymously from private data available after authentication: developer.wordpress.org/rest-api/reference/. Use that distinction as a design boundary, not merely as a description of core behavior.
3. Build a safe read and write boundary
Keep public reading genuinely public
Public answers should come from published, canonical content. Return the title, URL, publication or update date, author name where appropriate, excerpt or body, taxonomy terms and links to related resources. Exclude revisions, internal metadata, unpublished statuses, private comments, user emails and plugin settings. If an agent can answer from HTML, it should not need a privileged token.
Protect private reads
Customer data, account details, orders, submissions and internal support records require authentication and an authorization check for the specific user or tenant. Filtering a response after fetching an entire database row is not enough; design the query and response so unauthorized fields never leave the server.

Publishing, editing, deleting, changing prices, modifying users and triggering external actions are capabilities, not ordinary reads. Require authentication, check the caller’s WordPress capability and validate the requested object and fields. Use explicit confirmation for destructive or high-impact actions, and return clear HTTP status codes when the request is rejected.
Use narrow credentials
Create a separate application identity for an agent instead of sharing an administrator login. Grant only the routes and capabilities needed for its job, set an expiration or review date, log its requests and revoke the credential when the integration ends. Never place administrator credentials in prompts, browser JavaScript, public documentation or a client-side configuration file.

4. Make pages and responses easy for an agent to parse
Agents perform better when the same fact appears once, in a predictable form, with an unambiguous owner and date. Give each important page one purpose and a descriptive title. Put answers, prices, eligibility rules, dimensions, dates and procedures in ordinary text rather than only inside an image, an interactive widget or an undocumented script.
Use a stable information pattern
- Use one clear
<h1>and descriptive<h2>and<h3>headings. - Define an entity before using an abbreviation or pronoun that could be ambiguous.
- Keep names, units, currencies, time zones and date formats consistent.
- Use descriptive anchor text, not repeated “click here” links.
- Show the canonical URL and keep redirects intentional.
- Ensure the visible page and any structured data state the same facts.
Add JSON-LD only for what the page describes
Valid JSON-LD can identify an article, product, organization, event or other entity, but it should not introduce claims absent from the page. Avoid duplicate schema blocks that disagree on price, availability, dates or names. Validate syntax and remove stale markup when a page changes. Structured data helps an agent resolve meaning; it does not replace readable HTML or a working REST response.

Design custom JSON for predictable use
Return stable property names, machine-readable dates, explicit nulls where a value is unavailable, pagination metadata and links to related resources. Document authentication failures, validation errors, rate-limit responses and missing objects. Version a breaking change instead of silently changing a field’s type.
5. Add MCP when your hosting path supports it
Model Context Protocol (MCP) can standardize how an agent discovers and calls tools. WordPress.com documentation states, “WordPress.com includes a built-in MCP server for AI agents.” The published server is https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1; the official setup and eligibility details are at developer.wordpress.com/docs/mcp/.
Availability depends on the WordPress.com plan and MCP settings. Jetpack-connected self-hosted sites use the same server path when eligible. Authorization uses OAuth 2.1, so the agent receives a grant rather than a copy of your administrator password. Review the scopes and capabilities presented during authorization before approving them.
If your site has built-in MCP support
- Confirm that the site and plan are eligible in the current WordPress.com documentation.
- Enable MCP only in the site’s documented settings.
- Register or connect the client through the OAuth 2.1 flow and inspect the requested scopes.
- Test read-only capabilities with a test account before enabling any write capability.
- Monitor authorization events, tool calls, errors and revocations.
If your site is self-hosted without that service
Keep the REST API as the authoritative interface and expose only reviewed capabilities through a vetted MCP adapter or your own gateway. Use portable JSON schemas for tool inputs and outputs so clients can convert them into function declarations reliably. Do not publish a generic “run any WordPress action” tool; map each allowed task to a small, auditable operation.

6. Decide how crawlers may access the site
AI assistants may fetch pages, feeds or APIs using different user-agent groups. Review robots.txt, web-server rules, CDN bot controls, firewall policies and rate limits together. Allowing a crawler in robots.txt does not override an authentication wall, and blocking it there does not remove a URL from a sitemap or a previously cached result.
Write an explicit policy
- List the content classes that may be fetched: for example, published documentation and product pages.
- Block private, staging, search-result, account and administrative paths.
- Apply the same decision at the server or CDN layer for user agents that ignore advisory rules.
- Set sensible request rates and watch for bursts or repeated expensive queries.
- Record changes so an unexpected crawler increase can be tied to a policy update.
Current WordPress plugin implementations can add named AI-crawler rules and Content-Signal directives, but the exact behavior depends on the implementation. Inspect the generated file and the effective server response rather than assuming a checkbox covers every layer.
Keep the XML sitemap authoritative
Maintain a complete, current XML sitemap or sitemap index containing canonical, indexable URLs. Remove drafts, private pages, noindex URLs, duplicate parameters and redirects. A sitemap helps an indexing system discover the URL set; it does not grant permission to read protected content.
Treat llms.txt as optional
WordPress tools can generate /llms.txt, Markdown endpoints or /llms-full.txt. These are emerging ecosystem conventions, and not every assistant reads them. If you publish one, generate it from the same canonical content, identify the site’s important sections and exclude private, draft and noindex material. Keep HTML, REST responses, authentication controls and the XML sitemap correct even if the file disappears.
7. Compare the main implementation paths

A plugin can accelerate discovery files and crawler policy. Custom REST endpoints are the better fit when an agent must perform narrowly defined business operations. MCP is attractive when your hosting path supports it and you want a standardized client connection; it does not remove the need for permission design.
8. Test from outside the server and keep testing
Run the following checks with an unauthenticated client, a restricted test account and an administrative test account where appropriate. Never use production customer data for write tests.
- Fetch the home page and confirm the REST discovery
Linkheader survives redirects. - Fetch
/wp-json/and verify that intended routes appear with valid JSON. - Call each public endpoint with pagination, an empty result and an invalid parameter; check status codes and that no private fields leak.
- Call each protected endpoint without credentials, with an expired or insufficient credential and with a valid test credential.
- Perform a safe, reversible write and verify capability checks, audit logging and rollback.
- Fetch the XML sitemap,
robots.txtand anyllms.txtor Markdown URL. Check content type, compression, caching, redirects and exclusion rules. - Inspect canonical links, JSON-LD syntax, heading order and visible text on representative templates.
- Repeat the tests after theme, plugin, hosting, firewall or CDN changes.
9. Troubleshoot common failures
The API works in the browser but an agent cannot discover it
Check the final HTTP response, not just the origin server. A redirect, CDN cache, security rule or missing Link header can hide discovery. Confirm that /wp-json/ returns JSON over HTTPS and that the firewall permits the intended clients.
A route appears but returns fields the agent should not see
Inspect the response schema and the permission callback. Remove sensitive properties at the query or serialization layer, test with an anonymous request and review related routes, embeds and media responses for the same data.
Writes fail with a generic authorization error
Verify the OAuth scope or application credential, the WordPress capability, nonce or token requirements and the target object’s ownership. Return a specific 401 or 403 response and log the reason internally without exposing secrets.
The agent quotes outdated or contradictory information
Find duplicate pages, stale JSON-LD, cached API responses and conflicting dates or prices. Choose one canonical page, update visible text and structured data together, invalidate caches and remove obsolete URLs from the sitemap.
A crawler ignores your preference
Treat robots.txt as advisory. Enforce the decision with authentication, server or CDN rules, rate limits and, where necessary, a web-application firewall. Continue monitoring logs for alternate user agents and unexpected request patterns.
10. A practical launch checklist
- Public, private, write and admin operations are documented.
- REST discovery works through the real public network path.
- Each exposed route has a reviewed schema, pagination and error contract.
- Credentials are separate, narrow, revocable and logged.
- Pages use stable headings, descriptive metadata, canonical URLs and consistent JSON-LD.
- Private and draft material is absent from APIs, exports, sitemaps and Markdown files.
robots.txt, CDN rules and rate limits express the same crawler policy.- The XML sitemap contains only current, canonical, indexable URLs.
- MCP is enabled only when eligibility, scopes and host behavior are understood.
- Unauthenticated and authenticated tests run after every significant site change.
There is no reliable percentage increase in traffic, rankings, conversions or revenue that can be promised merely by making a WordPress site agent-ready. The defensible outcome is operational: agents can discover and interpret the content you choose, perform only the actions you authorize, and leave an audit trail when they do so.
