What controls whether your server is listed?
The directory switch is the AdvertiseServer setting in serverconfig.json. It is not a setting named Public, and changing a server name or port will not substitute for it.
For Vintage Story version 1.20 and later, the default is disabled. That default makes a new dedicated server private from a directory-discovery perspective until you deliberately opt in. If your server was created from an older installation and later updated, inspect the actual configuration file rather than assuming its value.

The setting controls appearance in the game’s public-server browser. It does not change your network forwarding, firewall, authentication, whitelist, or password settings.
Method 1: edit serverconfig.json
File editing is the most reliable method because it leaves the desired value in the server’s persistent configuration. The exact folder depends on whether you run the server yourself, use a host’s control panel, or start it with a custom data directory. Look for the serverconfig.json that the running instance actually loads; editing a similarly named copy elsewhere has no effect.

- Stop the server if your host recommends stopping before configuration changes. Do not edit a file while a running process may overwrite it on shutdown.
- Open the active
serverconfig.json. Use the host’s file manager, SFTP, or the directory specified by your startup command. If a panel has both a template and a live configuration, choose the live server configuration. - Find
AdvertiseServer. If it already exists, change only its value. If it is absent, add it in the same JSON object as the other server settings, following JSON comma rules. - Set the value to the JSON boolean
true. Use lowercasetruewithout quotation marks. - Save the file and check that it remains valid JSON. A missing comma, an extra comma, or smart quotation marks can prevent the server from reading the file.
- Start or restart the server completely. Server-configuration changes take effect only after the server is relaunched; a browser refresh or an in-game reconnect is not enough.
- Wait several minutes, then check the directory. Open Browse public servers, refresh the list, and search for the server name. Directory publication is not necessarily instantaneous.

Common JSON mistakes
"AdvertiseServer": "true"is a string, not a boolean. Use unquotedtrue."AdvertiseServer": Trueis not valid JSON. JSON booleans are lowercase.- Changing a key called
Publicdoes not enable the directory listing. The relevant key is exactlyAdvertiseServer. - Editing a backup, template, or different instance’s file changes nothing in the server you are viewing.
- Saving valid JSON but not relaunching the server leaves the old in-memory value active.
Method 2: enable advertising from the console
If you have access to the dedicated server console, the command supplied by a third-party Vintage Story guide is:
/serverconfig advertise onRun it in the server console, or through an account that is permitted to issue server-configuration commands. Then perform a full restart, because serverconfig changes are applied when the server is relaunched. If your console reports an unknown command or rejects the syntax, use the file-editing method and verify that your game version supports the command form; command names can change between versions.

Why a newly created server is not listed in version 1.20+
Starting with version 1.20, AdvertiseServer is disabled by default. This is intentional: creating a server does not automatically publish it to every player using the public browser. Set the value explicitly to true when you want directory discovery.
Do not infer the value from an old tutorial, an old backup, or the presence of a server name. Open the configuration generated by the version you are running and confirm the boolean. Defaults and command behavior are version-sensitive, so re-check the current server documentation after a major update.
What “public” means in practice
Advertising places the server in the list visible to people who choose Browse public servers. Anyone who can browse that directory can discover the listing. It does not mean that every person can successfully join: access controls still determine who is admitted.

The official wiki describes the whitelist as significantly more secure than relying on a password and characterizes disabling the whitelist as risky. If you want a discoverable server for a known group, keep the whitelist enabled and add the players you intend to admit. Another option is to set a password. A listing can therefore be visible while participation remains restricted.
Hiding the server is a privacy measure, not a complete security control. Turning AdvertiseServer off removes directory exposure, but it does not replace a whitelist, password, or the rest of your access-control and network-hardening decisions. Conversely, turning advertising on does not disable those controls.

The table describes the directory and access-control trade-off; the exact whitelist default can differ by generated configuration and version. Inspect your own file instead of assuming a default.

1. Confirm the exact key and value
Reopen the active serverconfig.json and verify that the property is spelled AdvertiseServer with a capital A, S, and no spaces in the name. The value must be the boolean true, not quoted text. If the file contains duplicate keys, remove the duplicate and leave one unambiguous entry.
2. Make sure you changed the running instance
Multiple worlds, test installations, or host-panel templates can leave several configuration files on disk. Check the data directory and startup configuration used by the process that is currently online. A successful save in the wrong directory will look exactly like a setting that does not work.

3. Restart instead of relying on a reload
The server wiki states that serverconfig changes take effect only after the server is relaunched. Stop the process cleanly, start it again, and wait until it has finished loading before checking the browser. Merely reconnecting your client or refreshing the directory cannot apply a value still held by the old process.
4. Give the directory time to update
One published guide notes that a listing can take a few minutes to appear. After the restart, wait several minutes, return to Browse public servers, and refresh. Check the exact server name rather than relying only on its position in the list.
5. Check the client view without changing the server again
If the server still does not appear, refresh the public-server screen and remove any search text or optional filters you may have applied. Confirm that you are looking at the public browser rather than a favorites or history view. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether a restart or a configuration correction solved the issue.
6. Validate the file before starting
A syntax error can cause the server to ignore, reject, or regenerate configuration. Compare the edited line with the valid example above, restore standard quotation marks, and check every comma around the property. If your host provides a JSON validation warning, resolve it before restarting.
7. Use the console command as a cross-check
If file editing appears correct but the listing does not update, run /serverconfig advertise on from the authorized server console, restart, and check again. If the command is unavailable, that may indicate a version or interface difference; retain the explicit JSON setting and consult the documentation for the exact version you run.
8. Consider host-panel persistence
Some managed panels regenerate configuration files when an instance starts or when you change a preset. If your edit disappears after restart, use the panel’s persistent configuration editor or startup template, then restart once more. Do not repeatedly edit a generated file that the panel will overwrite.
How to verify that advertising is working
- Read the live
serverconfig.jsonand confirm"AdvertiseServer": true. - Restart the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Allow a few minutes for directory propagation.
- From a client, open Browse public servers, refresh, and search for the server’s exact displayed name.
- Test joining with the access controls you intend to use. A visible listing and successful admission are separate checks.
If the server is visible but invited players cannot enter, advertising is functioning; investigate the whitelist, password, network reachability, or other join controls separately rather than changing AdvertiseServer again.
Turning a listing off later
To remove directory advertising, set the JSON value to false or run:
/serverconfig advertise falseRestart the server. The directory may take a short time to reflect the change, so do not treat a listing that remains visible immediately after shutdown as proof that the setting failed.
Version and security cautions
- The 1.20 default and the console command forms are volatile details. Check the documentation for your installed version after upgrades.
- Do not assume the whitelist’s default state. Sources differ, and generated files can vary; inspect your own configuration and set the access policy deliberately.
- Advertising is a discovery choice. Decide separately whether the server should accept everyone, only whitelisted players, or players who know a password.
- Keep a backup of the working configuration before major edits, but always verify that the backup is not the file your live server is actually loading.
For the usual 1.20-or-later installation, the complete path is straightforward: set AdvertiseServer to true, restart, wait a few minutes, and check Browse public servers. If you want visibility without unrestricted access, leave the whitelist enabled or require a password.
