If your Samsung tablet screen will not rotate, swipe down from the top to open Quick settings and tap the orientation control until it changes from gray Portrait or Landscape to blue Auto rotate. Then turn the tablet sideways in an app that supports landscape mode.
Turn on Auto rotate

Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open Quick settings.

Find the orientation control. If it is gray and says Portrait or Landscape, rotation is locked. Tap it until it turns blue and says Auto rotate.

Close Quick settings and turn the tablet sideways while using an app that supports the orientation you want. Samsung says Auto rotate uses the device’s internal accelerometer to match the screen to how the tablet is held. Samsung’s rotation instructions describe the behavior as: “When Auto rotate is enabled on your Galaxy phone or tablet, the screen will automatically rotate when you move between Portrait and Landscape modes.”

If Auto rotate is missing from Quick settings
The control may have been removed from the Quick settings panel. Swipe down, open Edit or Customize (the label can vary), and add the screen-orientation control back. Samsung’s Quick settings guidance covers restoring the control.
If the screen still will not rotate
Check whether the app supports rotation
Try rotating the tablet in another app. Some apps are designed to open only in portrait or only in landscape, so Auto rotate cannot make those apps switch orientation. Samsung notes this app limitation.

Install updates and restart
Check for available software updates, install them, and restart the tablet. These are reversible troubleshooting steps to try before a data-erasing reset. Samsung includes updates and a restart among its troubleshooting steps.

Check the tablet for cracks or other physical damage that could affect its performance. If damage is present, or the rotation problem continues after the software steps, contact Samsung Support to arrange service. Samsung recommends support when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.

Use a factory reset only as a later step
A factory data reset erases personal information. Back up your data before proceeding. If a security lock is configured, Samsung asks for credentials during the reset. Because this step removes data, try the reversible checks first. Samsung’s reset guidance explains the precaution.

The Home screen does not rotate by default. To allow it to switch to landscape, press and hold an empty area of the Home screen, tap Settings, then enable Rotate to landscape mode. Menu wording or availability may differ across tablet models and One UI versions. Samsung’s Home screen instructions provide the setting path.

Temporarily keep the screen from turning
When Auto rotate is on, keep a finger on the screen as you turn the tablet. Release your finger to allow the screen to rotate. Samsung describes this temporary rotation lock.
