Try the Test button only as directed for your model. Samsung’s procedures and controls differ by refrigerator, so use the exact model’s manual when a step does not match what you see.
Start with the freezer temperature
Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance says the freezer must reach 0°F or below for ice production, including on models with an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment. Check the displayed temperature. If the setting is warmer, set it to 0°F or lower, enable Power Freeze, wait three hours, and check again. If the freezer still cannot reach that temperature, address the cooling problem before focusing on the ice maker. A recently installed refrigerator may need a different initial wait; check the installation guidance for your model.

Check the ice maker and bucket
- Make sure the ice maker is switched on. Look for an Ice Off indicator on the control panel; some dual-ice-maker models show separate indicators even when one button controls both makers.
- Ensure the ice bucket is fully and correctly installed. Some dual cubed-and-bite ice makers require a particular bucket orientation, and a misaligned bucket can obstruct the mechanism.
- Keep the bucket clear of food and scoops. Items in it may cause the maker to register the bucket as full.
Controls and bucket designs vary by model. Check the manual if the indicators or installation do not match these descriptions. Samsung’s Australia support guide also notes that model, setting, and sequence details can vary by region and purchase location.

Check the water supply and filter
Confirm the line is supplying water
Check that the household water valve is fully open and the refrigerator’s water line is connected, unobstructed, and not kinked or pinched. On dispenser-equipped US models, Samsung’s flow check is 6 ounces (¾ cup) of water in less than 10 seconds. Dispense into a measuring cup to check. If the flow is too low, repeat the check with the filter removed, following the model’s instructions. If flow improves with the filter out, the filter may be restricting water and may need replacement.
Consider filter age and water pressure
Samsung says an old filter can restrict pressure enough to affect ice production. Its US support page describes filters rated for 300 gallons—approximately six months of average household use. Treat that as the manufacturer’s rating and rough interval, not a universal replacement schedule; follow your refrigerator’s filter indicator and manual. Match any replacement to the exact refrigerator model rather than assuming one filter fits every Samsung refrigerator.

Samsung specifies a minimum of 20 psi in particular troubleshooting situations, including when an ice maker has not worked properly since the water line was adjusted. This is not a universal plumbing rule. If pressure or supply flow appears low, a household water-supply issue may need attention; resetting the ice maker will not fix it.

Use the model-specific Test or reset procedure
Do not assume every Samsung ice maker has the same Test button location or sequence. Samsung’s general US instructions say the button may be behind the ice bucket. Follow the manual for your exact model and use the procedure for the maker’s location. Samsung gives approximate test durations of six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment maker; the model’s instructions take precedence.

- Find the ice-maker test instructions in the manual for your refrigerator model. Do not remove panels or parts unless those instructions direct you to.
- If the manual’s procedure requires access behind the bucket, remove the bucket as instructed and locate the Test button.
- Press and hold the button until you hear the chime, then allow the model’s test sequence to finish. Follow the manual for what to expect during the test.
- If there is no chime or response, Samsung advises a two-minute power cycle and one more attempt. Do not keep pressing Test after the tray has filled: water can overflow or ice can jam.
Button positions differ across designs, including freezer-door, refrigerator-compartment, and side-by-side models. See Samsung’s guides for refrigerator-compartment and side-by-side ice-maker resets and the general US ice-maker troubleshooting steps.

Some ice, but not enough
Recheck the temperature, water flow, filter condition, and bucket seating before assuming a part has failed. Frequent door openings and refrigerator leveling are also factors Samsung identifies in troubleshooting low output. Samsung UK’s guidance, updated 3 August 2026, estimates around 120 cubes per day for refrigerators fitted with Samsung ice makers, or 10–12 cubes every 45–60 minutes, depending on temperature, usage, and ice-maker type. These are regional manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee for every model or setting. See Samsung UK’s ice-production guidance.

Small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice
Samsung treats small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice as a distinct troubleshooting issue. Check the water supply and filter, and consult your model’s manual for the appropriate steps; do not assume a reset alone will correct water quality or restricted flow.
Know when to request service
Samsung advises seeking service if the Test button still gets no response after the prescribed power cycle, or if an error code appears. Follow the model-specific error-code instructions or contact Samsung support. If the ice maker is producing ice and there is no error code, Samsung’s US guide says service is not needed for the ice-making complaint alone.
For model-specific controls, bucket installation, filter compatibility, and error codes, use the manual for your refrigerator. One example is the Dacor DRF36C500SR manual; its instructions apply to that model, not all Samsung refrigerators.
