Apple says Maps speaks walking-specific instructions for turns and maneuvers, including walking up stairs, when you tap Go. If your starting point is somewhere other than My Location, Maps shows Steps rather than Go and does not speak directions. Apple’s walking-directions guide explains the route flow.
Choose between spoken directions and reading the steps
Use spoken guidance
Tap Go to hear directions as you walk. If you need to adjust the audio during navigation, tap the Audio Control button and select an available spoken-directions option. The options displayed can depend on your navigation state and settings.
For spoken turn-by-turn directions, Apple requires an internet connection and Precise Location to be turned on. Spoken directions are not available in every country or region. See Apple’s guidance on audio and spoken directions.

Apple directs users to Settings > Siri to change the voice or language used for spoken directions. The exact labels can vary by iOS version, so look for Siri’s language and voice controls if your screen differs.

Optional walking features and related route tools
Use immersive walking instructions
Apple documents Raise to View at Settings > Apps > Maps > Walking. After starting directions, raise your iPhone and tap the Pedestrian AR button to use camera-based, augmented-reality walking instructions. Feature availability can vary by region and iOS version.
Improve location and heading accuracy
The Enhanced setting under Settings > Apps > Maps > Walking uses the camera and motion sensors to improve location and heading accuracy while walking. Apple says turning it off can decrease battery usage. It is an optional setting, not a requirement for ordinary walking directions.
Check turns or prepare for a connection loss
While following a route, you can switch to a route overview or inspect upcoming turns. If you expect to lose internet access, Apple’s general Maps guide points to offline maps as a related option; its availability and coverage depend on location. Apple also documents following walking directions on Apple Watch. Read the Maps on iPhone guide and the route overview and turn-list guide for those features.
If walking directions or voice guidance are missing
