How to Get Unstuck Without Waiting for New Year’s

A new year can feel like a fresh start, but you can begin any time. Choose one meaningful change and link a small action to a specific cue.

You can start working toward a change today; you do not need to wait for New Year’s Day or another milestone. A meaningful date can make a fresh start feel distinct, but it does not guarantee lasting progress. Choose one change, decide on a small next action, and specify when and where you will do it.

Why a new date can make starting feel easier

People often treat certain dates as fresh-start cues. In three archival field studies, diet searches, gym visits, and commitments to pursue goals increased after landmarks such as the start of a week, month, year, or semester, as well as birthdays and holidays. The authors proposed that these landmarks help people mentally separate a new period from past imperfections. The studies show increased goal-related activity around landmarks, not that a date causes lasting success. Dai, Milkman, and Riis, Management Science, 2014

In five laboratory experiments, emphasizing a date as the beginning of a new period increased people’s intentions to initiate goal pursuit. That supports using a personally meaningful date if it helps you begin, but it does not answer whether the change will last. Dai, Milkman, and Riis, Psychological Science, 2015

Do you have to wait for a special date?

No. A temporal landmark can offer a psychological reset, but an immediate cue can serve a different purpose: it tells you when to act. You might use both—for example, decide today to make a change, then link its first action to a routine you already have. The available evidence does not establish that a calendar landmark is universally better than starting with an immediate action cue.

Turn one goal into a specific action

Start with one change that matters to you rather than trying to redesign your whole life at once. Goal setting has a positive but modest average effect on behavior change: an American Psychological Association review of 141 papers and 16,523 participants reported an average effect size of d = .34 (95% CI [.28, .41]). Effects were stronger for difficult goals, publicly set goals, and group goals; these are findings across studies, not a prediction of what will happen for any one person. APA-indexed review, 2017

Write an if–then plan

Make the goal easier to act on by naming when, where, and how you will do something. An if–then plan links a recognizable situation to a specific action:

If [specific situation or time], then I will [specific action].

For example: “If I finish lunch on weekdays, then I will take a ten-minute walk.” This is an illustration, not a tested prescription; choose an action that fits your circumstances.

A 2006 meta-analysis of 94 independent tests found a positive, medium-to-large effect of implementation intentions on goal attainment (d = .65). That broad average does not mean every plan, goal, or person will see the same result. A 2025 review by Gollwitzer and Sheeran discusses if–then planning across areas of psychology and notes that effects vary with samples, goals, and plan features. Together, these findings support trying a specific plan, not treating it as a universal fix. Gollwitzer and Sheeran, 2006; Gollwitzer and Sheeran, Annual Review of Psychology, 2025

What to do if you miss a planned action

A missed walk, study session, or other action does not erase what you have already done. Treat it as a missed opportunity, not proof that you cannot change. Return to the next cue in your plan, or adjust the timing or action so it is more realistic. If you want a fresh-start moment, choose one that feels meaningful—but you can take the next step without one.
