Make your spare-time phone use fit the moment: learn or explore, read or listen, make something, connect with someone, or simply enjoy entertainment. Choose one activity that suits the time and setting, then decide whether you want a stopping point. You do not need a new phone—or a productive goal—to make a break worthwhile.
Choose what you want from the break
Start with the kind of time you have, rather than opening whichever app is easiest to reach. A few quiet minutes may suit a short article or one small question; a longer session could be a book, a creative project, or a deeper look at a subject. If you want to relax, entertainment or a social activity is a valid choice too.

- Learn or explore: Follow a specific question, topic, place, or hobby.
- Read or listen: Pick an ebook or audiobook that fits your attention and surroundings.
- Create: Use the camera for a photo idea or an educational activity.
- Unwind or connect: Choose something enjoyable, and set a stopping point if you want one.
Consider whether the activity needs your eyes and hands, whether the setting is safe for it, and whether it costs money or needs a data connection. What works best depends on your preferences; these are options, not a ranking.

Make your phone use intentional without imposing a universal limit
There is no single daily screen-time limit that suits every adult or circumstance in the sources cited here. A practical starting point is to look at your own habits, keep the activities you value, and set a manageable boundary for apps that routinely take more time than you mean to give them.
Check usage on a supported Android phone
Google says Digital Wellbeing on some Android phones can show app screen time, how often you open the phone, and notifications. It also supports app timers and Bedtime mode routines, though availability and exact steps vary by device. Google’s Digital Wellbeing help page explains the features.

Account for Apple family settings and software requirements
In its September 29, 2026 announcement, Apple described a family guide created with the American Academy of Pediatrics. The guide frames device habits alongside sleep, schoolwork, physical activity, and time with family and friends; it is family guidance, not a universal adult health rule. Apple also said the Screen Time update it described was available with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, and that all products in a Family Sharing group needed specified software versions for the update. Feature availability may vary by region, language, or model. Check Apple’s announcement and your device’s current settings for applicable requirements. Apple’s September 29, 2026 announcement.
