To update DirectX on Windows 11, install available updates through Settings > Windows Update. To check which version is installed, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) and look under System Information. Microsoft’s guidance identifies Windows Update—not a separate DirectX download—as the way to get the latest version available for your Windows installation.
Update DirectX through Windows Update
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates and install any available updates.
- If Windows prompts you to restart, restart the PC to complete installation.
Microsoft says Windows Update provides the latest DirectX version available for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The version your PC can use depends on the Windows version and system support; installing an arbitrary numbered DirectX package is not the update method. Check the installed DirectX version
- Open Start and search for
dxdiag. - Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If a prompt asks whether to check for digitally signed drivers, choose an option to continue.
- On the System tab, read the DirectX Version entry under System Information.
DxDiag reports the DirectX version along with diagnostic information about components and drivers. It checks your system; it does not update DirectX. Microsoft explains the check in its version-check instructions.

No separate DirectX installer is the standard Windows 11 update route. DirectX is a set of Windows components that lets software—especially games—work with video and audio hardware. For the latest version available to your installation, use Windows Update rather than downloading a package based only on its version number. Microsoft’s instructions identify Windows Update as the update path.

What if an older game asks for a DirectX file?
A game’s missing-file message does not necessarily mean Windows 11 needs a newer DirectX version. Microsoft’s legacy DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime guidance applies to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003; it is not a Windows 11 DirectX upgrade. Microsoft also says that package does not change the listed DirectX versions or components. See the scope of the legacy runtime guidance before treating it as a fix.
If Windows Update fails or the game still reports an error, note the exact message and look for help specific to your Windows build, the game, and your hardware. There is no single repair step established for every such case.
