Defeat the Ender Dragon, then collect the egg from the top of the End exit portal without mining it directly. A direct hit makes the egg teleport. The safest technique is to cover the portal, place a torch or other non-full block two blocks below the egg, remove the block supporting it, and let gravity turn it into an item. A powered piston is a controlled alternative.

What the dragon egg is and when it appears
It is the Ender Dragon’s trophy
The dragon egg appears after you defeat the Ender Dragon. It normally generates on top of the End exit portal, the bedrock structure that appears when the dragon fight ends. You do not craft the egg, find it in a chest, or obtain it by using a special tool. Killing the dragon is the event that creates it.
The egg is primarily a trophy and decorative block. Once collected, it does not provide a combat ability, crafting ingredient, or movement effect. Most players place it in a protected display room, although an ender chest is a useful temporary storage location while you return from the End.

Why mining the egg does not work
A dragon egg is not collected by holding a pickaxe or by repeatedly attacking it. When the egg is struck, it teleports to a nearby location instead of breaking. The same behavior can happen when you accidentally click it while trying to place a block. Because its destination is not always where you expect, random punching can move it toward the edge of the island or over the portal opening.
The collection trick is therefore based on gravity or piston movement, not ordinary block breaking. You make the egg fall onto a block that cannot occupy a full block space, causing it to break into an item.

Prepare the End before touching the egg
A few seconds of preparation greatly reduce the chance of losing the only egg available in your edition.
- Cover the exit portal opening. Place solid blocks across the portal so an item dropped above it cannot pass through. Do this before activating a piston or removing the egg’s support.
- Bring a torch. A normal torch is the simplest non-full block for the gravity method. A torch from the portal frame can also be used if you did not bring one.
- Have a replacement block ready. You may need to build a short platform or move around the portal to reach the support block safely.
- Carry an empty inventory slot. The egg becomes a dropped item, so a full inventory can leave it on the ground longer than necessary.
- Plan where the egg will land. A clear, solid area beside the portal makes the item easier to see and collect.
- Use controlled movements. Avoid jumping around the portal or clicking the egg while placing blocks. Accidental hits can teleport it.
The portal cover is the most important precaution. If the item falls into an uncovered exit portal, recovery may be difficult or impossible, so do not begin the final break until the opening is blocked.
Safest method: make the egg fall onto a torch
This method needs no redstone and uses the game’s block-support rules. Follow the sequence rather than trying to break the egg itself.

- Defeat the Ender Dragon and wait for the egg to appear. After the fight, identify the egg resting on the exit portal. Give the world a moment to finish generating the portal and its surroundings.
- Cover the portal. Place solid blocks over the portal’s opening and check from the side that there is no gap directly below the egg’s eventual drop point.
- Move the egg away from the portal if necessary. If it is positioned directly over the opening, touch it once so it teleports onto nearby end stone or another solid block. Follow the teleport particles and locate its new position before doing anything else. Do not keep hitting it; one deliberate relocation is safer than repeated attacks.
- Create space below the egg. Dig down or remove the block beneath the egg so there is an empty vertical space. Keep the egg itself supported while you work; the goal is to place the torch two blocks below it, not to break the support prematurely.
- Place a torch two blocks below the egg. The torch must be below the supporting block with an empty block between the egg and the torch. If a torch is unavailable, use a bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or another non-full block that leaves the egg unable to occupy the same space.
- Break the block directly supporting the egg. Once the torch is in position, remove the solid block immediately under the egg. The egg falls under gravity onto the non-full block and breaks into a collectible item.
- Pick up and secure the item. Walk over the dropped egg, then move it to an ender chest or a protected trophy room. Check the ground around the torch if you do not see it immediately; the item can land beside the support structure.
Why the spacing matters
The support block has to be removed only after the torch or substitute is correctly positioned. If you place the torch directly against the egg or leave no empty space for the fall, the setup may not produce the intended drop. Two blocks below the egg gives you the empty cell needed for the egg to fall onto the non-full block.

A bottom slab, button, or pressure plate works for the same reason: it does not fill a complete block volume. The exact material is less important than its shape and position. Place the substitute where the torch would go, keep the portal covered, and then remove the egg’s support.
Alternative method: push the egg with a piston
A piston can convert the egg into an item without digging a support-and-torch arrangement. This is useful when you have redstone equipment and want a clearly directed movement.
- Cover the exit portal first. The piston method still creates a dropped item, so protect the opening before placing the mechanism.
- Position a piston facing the egg. The piston’s pushing face must point toward the egg, with the piston placed where its extension can contact it.
- Connect a power source. Attach a lever or another redstone power source to the piston circuit.
- Activate the piston once. Powering the piston pushes the egg and makes it drop as an item. Avoid repeatedly toggling the circuit while searching for it.
- Collect the item immediately. Pick it up and store it somewhere protected before dismantling the setup.
The piston approach requires more materials and placement precision than a torch, but the push direction is easy to control. It is a good choice if you already have a piston and lever in your inventory or if the egg is in an awkward position for digging.
Torch versus piston: which collection method should you use?
| Method | Required items | Portal safety | Precision | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Torch or other non-full block | Torch, bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or similar block; ordinary building blocks | Safe when the portal is covered before the support is removed | Requires correct vertical spacing and access to the support block | Lowest-cost survival collection without redstone |
| Powered piston | Piston, lever or another redstone power source, and building blocks | Safe when the portal is covered before activation | Requires the piston face to line up with the egg | Controlled horizontal push when redstone is available |
Choose the torch setup if you want the fewest components. Choose a piston when the egg’s location makes support-block access inconvenient or when you prefer a one-direction push. Neither method removes the need to cover the portal.

What to do when the egg teleports
It moved after you hit it once
Stop clicking and inspect nearby end stone and other solid blocks. Teleport particles can indicate the direction or area where it relocated. Walk around the portal in a widening circle rather than striking random blocks. Once you find it, leave it untouched while you build the torch or piston setup.
It keeps moving during construction
Repeated movement usually means you are still making contact with the egg while placing or breaking blocks. Move to a different angle, use your crosshair carefully, and finish the support arrangement without clicking the egg. If you need to relocate it again, make one intentional touch, then restart the setup at its new position.
It is near the edge of the island
Do not punch it toward a safer-looking spot. Build a solid working platform beside it, cover any portal or open drop below, and use the torch or piston method from that platform. The objective is to change how the egg falls, not to force it across the terrain by hand.
If the egg falls into the exit portal
An uncovered portal is dangerous because the dropped item can pass through it. If the egg has already fallen through, search the destination area only if you can do so safely and your edition’s portal behavior leaves the item accessible. The available guidance does not guarantee recovery after a portal fall, so treat the egg as potentially lost rather than repeatedly breaking blocks around the portal.
If the egg is still visible above the portal, stop interacting with it, cover the opening from the sides, and then use the torch or piston method. Covering first prevents the same failure from happening during the final drop.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences
The normal first-defeat behavior is the same: defeating the Ender Dragon creates an egg on the exit portal, and the egg must be made to fall onto a non-full block or be pushed by a piston.
Minecraft’s official guidance distinguishes the number of eggs available by edition:

Edition behavior can change between game versions. If a second egg does not appear as expected, identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and note the version before troubleshooting. Do not assume that a Java result applies unchanged to Bedrock, or vice versa.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Trying to mine the egg directly
Symptom: The egg vanishes and reappears elsewhere. Fix: Stop attacking it and use gravity or a piston. Direct mining is not the collection mechanic.
Leaving the portal uncovered
Symptom: The egg item drops into the portal opening. Fix: Cover the opening before removing the support block or powering the piston. This should be done even when the egg appears to be offset from the portal.

Breaking the support before placing the torch
Symptom: The egg falls in an uncontrolled direction or remains a block. Fix: Rebuild the arrangement, place the non-full block two blocks below the egg, and only then remove the direct support.
Recommended Free Tools
Using the wrong vertical position
Symptom: The torch, slab, button, or pressure plate does not trigger the item drop. Fix: Ensure there is an empty block between the egg and the non-full block. The substitute must be below the support, not pressed directly against the egg.
Activating a piston without checking its face
Symptom: The piston extends but does not contact the egg. Fix: Reposition the piston so its pushing face points directly at the egg, then power it once after the portal is covered.
Assuming every teleport means the egg is gone
Symptom: You cannot see the egg where it started. Fix: Search nearby solid blocks and follow teleport particles. A strike normally relocates the egg; it does not make it an ordinary dropped item.
How to display the collected egg safely
After pickup, place the egg in a room away from accidental clicks and protect it from environmental hazards in your build. An enclosed pedestal or glass-fronted trophy room lets you display it without leaving it over a portal. If you are still traveling, store it in an ender chest before returning to the Overworld.

Quick Recap
A quick decision path
- Have you defeated the Ender Dragon? If not, the egg is not available yet.
- Is the egg visible? If it teleported, stop hitting it and search nearby solid blocks.
- Is the exit portal covered? If not, cover it before any collection attempt.
- Do you have a torch or another non-full block? Use the gravity method and remove the support only after correct placement.
- Do you have a piston and power source instead? Face the piston toward the egg and activate it once.
- Did the item appear? Pick it up immediately and move it to protected storage.
