Get the vanilla DayZ server XML files from Bohemia Interactive’s official DayZ-Central-Economy GitHub repository. Choose the correct vanilla mission folder
DayZ does not keep one universal set of server XML files. The mission directory contains the economy and world configuration for a specific map, so downloading the wrong directory can restore unsuitable event positions, spawn points, or map-specific settings.

The Sakhal directory currently does not include its own messages.xml according to the host documentation. Do not treat that absence as proof that your download is incomplete or copy a Chernarus or Livonia messages file into Sakhal without checking the map’s expected configuration.
What the default XML files control
Most restoration requests concern the db directory, but the mission root also contains XML files that affect events, player entry, attachments, and logging. Knowing each file’s scope lets you repair one subsystem without erasing unrelated custom work.

The standard Chernarus mission structure also includes the db/ directory, cfgeconomycore.xml, cfgeventgroups.xml, cfgeventspawns.xml, and related configuration files. A complete map-folder download gives you that baseline; a single-file download is better when only one configuration area needs repair.
Back up the live mission before changing anything
Restoring a vanilla file is destructive if the current file contains deliberate edits. Custom loot tables, mod registrations, event changes, player-spawn adjustments, and scheduled messages can all disappear when a file is overwritten.

- Open the server’s mission directory in the host’s web file manager or through FTP.
- Download the entire mission folder to your computer, or at minimum copy every XML file you may replace. Preserve the directory layout, including the
dbsubdirectory. - Add a date and purpose to the backup name, such as
mission-before-vanilla-types-2026-10-15. Keep the untouched copy outside the live directory. - If a mod has its own documented economy files, save those separately as well. A vanilla replacement may remove registrations that the mod requires.
Do not rely only on an automatic host backup unless you know its retention period and can download a copy. A local backup gives you a direct rollback if the replacement causes a startup failure.
Download the official default files
Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ-Central-Economy repository is the authoritative source identified for vanilla mission economy files. It contains map-specific directories rather than a single generic types.xml.
- Open the repository in a browser and enter the directory for your map:
dayzOffline.chernarusplus,dayzOffline.enoch, ordayzOffline.sakhal. - For a complete baseline, download the repository ZIP or the entire selected mission folder. Retain the folder names and subfolders exactly as supplied.
- For a focused repair, open the relevant file and save only that XML. For example, use
db/types.xmlfor ordinary loot,db/events.xmlfor dynamic event definitions, ordb/globals.xmlfor global economy settings. - Extract the ZIP locally before uploading. Verify that the selected map folder contains the expected mission files and that the
dbdirectory is nested at the correct level rather than accidentally wrapped in an extra folder.
Downloading individual files is safer when your server has customizations you want to retain. Downloading the complete map folder is appropriate when the mission directory is broadly corrupted and you have decided to rebuild the vanilla baseline.
Compare vanilla files with your customized copies
Do not overwrite first and investigate later. Open the downloaded XML beside the backed-up live version in a text comparison tool.

- Look for custom item blocks in
types.xml, including modded class names and altered nominal or lifetime values. - Check
cfgeconomycore.xmlfor custom economy-file registrations. Replacing it can disconnect files that a mod or custom mission expects. - Review
events.xmlandcfgeventspawns.xmltogether. An event definition can depend on spawn coordinates that are intentionally different from the vanilla map. - Compare
cfgspawnabletypes.xmlwithcfgrandompresets.xmlas a pair when attachments or cargo are involved; restoring one while leaving an incompatible custom preset can produce errors. - Check
messages.xmlfor custom restart announcements and other scheduled text before replacing it.
If the comparison shows only one malformed block, repair that block or replace only the affected file. Keep a copy of the merged result so you can reproduce the change after a future server update.
Upload the selected files to the mission directory
Hosts generally provide either a browser-based file manager or FTP access. The interface differs by provider, but the destination must be the mission folder used by the running server and the map must match the server’s selected mission.
Using a web file manager
- Open the file manager and navigate to the active DayZ mission directory.
- Enter
dbwhen uploading a database file such astypes.xml,globals.xml,events.xml, oreconomy.xml. Root-level files such ascfgspawnabletypes.xmlremain beside thedbfolder. - Upload the replacement file. If the manager asks whether to overwrite, confirm only after checking that the backup is complete.
- When uploading a complete map folder, merge its contents into the existing mission directory rather than creating a second nested directory with a similar name.
- Confirm the uploaded filename, capitalization, and extension. XML names are not interchangeable;
types.xmlandTypes.xmlshould not be assumed equivalent.
Using FTP
- Connect with the host-provided FTP credentials and open the server’s mission path.
- On the local side, open the extracted map folder. On the remote side, open the matching mission folder.
- Drag the selected files into their corresponding locations, preserving
db/for database XML files. - Allow transfers to finish before closing the client, then refresh the remote directory and verify the file sizes and modification times.
- Disconnect only after confirming that no transfer remains queued or failed.
Upload permissions are normally controlled by the host account. If a transfer succeeds but the server still reads the old content, stop the server, refresh the file manager, and verify that you edited the active mission path rather than a template or inactive map directory.
Restart and validate the restoration
Start the server after the upload and watch its normal startup output or RPT log. XML parsing errors, unknown classes, invalid values, and missing files are usually reported during startup or when the affected subsystem initializes.

- Open the latest startup or RPT log in the host panel or download it through FTP.
- Search for XML parsing messages, mission-file warnings, unknown names, and references to the file you replaced.
- Join the server and test the specific behavior that motivated the restoration: ordinary loot, a dynamic event, fresh-player spawning, attachments, or scheduled messages.
- If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backed-up file, and restart before attempting another change.
The official cfgeconomycore.xml includes log_missionfilewarning and save_types_startup defaults. These settings provide useful context when reading logs, but a clean startup does not by itself prove that every custom item or event behaves as intended; test the affected system in game.
Replace one file or reset the entire mission?

Nitrado’s guidance describes reinstallation as the fastest way to restore default values but warns that it “wipes every other change you’ve made right along with it.” For troubleshooting, selective replacement is therefore the safer first move. Use a reinstall only when a full reset is the actual objective and your backup has been tested.

Common restoration problems and fixes
The server will not start after uploading a file
Stop the server and restore the backed-up version of the last file changed. Check the startup or RPT log for the filename and line reported in the warning. If the vanilla file starts successfully but your custom file does not, reapply custom blocks gradually and restart after each logical group.
Loot is still wrong after restoring types.xml
types.xml governs ordinary item definitions, but global limits and timers in db/globals.xml, economy switches in db/economy.xml, and accepted labels in cfglimitsdefinition.xml also affect the result. Compare those related files before replacing all of them. Modded item classes must remain registered where the server expects them.

Dynamic events use bad locations
Restore db/events.xml and cfgeventspawns.xml as a compatible set when both definitions and coordinates may have changed. Replacing only one can leave an event referring to a missing or unsuitable spawn entry.
Attachments or cargo do not appear
Check cfgspawnabletypes.xml and the referenced pools in cfgrandompresets.xml. A replacement may remove custom attachments or cargo intentionally added by a mod, so compare both files with the backup before accepting the vanilla content.
Fresh players spawn unexpectedly
Inspect cfgplayerspawnpoints.xml. This file controls fresh-player locations and constraints; it is separate from ordinary loot and dynamic event settings.
Restart warnings disappeared
Check messages.xml and remember that the Sakhal mission directory currently lacks its own copy. Do not assume that copying another map’s messages file is required; verify the map’s supplied structure first.

The upload appears successful but nothing changed
Confirm the server was restarted, the file is in the active mission directory, and the correct map folder was used. Refresh the remote listing and inspect the current file’s timestamp and size. A host may expose multiple mission directories, templates, or inactive instances.

The same host can expose templates, inactive maps, backups, and the directory used by the live instance. Do not infer the destination solely from a familiar folder name. Confirm the mission selected in the server control panel, then match that selection to the corresponding map directory. If the panel exposes a mission parameter or startup configuration, use it to verify whether the server is loading Chernarus, Livonia, or Sakhal. After uploading, refresh the remote listing and compare the replacement file’s modification time. A restart followed by a log check is the final confirmation that the running process read the file you changed.
Which files should be restored together?
Some files describe objects while others supply the names or coordinates those objects use. Treat events.xml and cfgeventspawns.xml as a related pair when event definitions or locations are suspect. Treat cfgspawnabletypes.xml and cfgrandompresets.xml as a related pair for cargo and attachments. For loot problems, inspect types.xml together with globals.xml, economy.xml, and cfglimitsdefinition.xml before deciding that the item table alone is at fault. This dependency-aware approach avoids replacing a large part of the mission when a smaller, compatible set will solve the problem.

You need three things before starting: access to the official repository, access to the host’s active mission directory through its web file manager or FTP, and a local backup location with enough room for the mission folder. You should also know which map is running and whether mods have added economy files, item classes, attachments, or messages. Keep the downloaded files on your computer until the server has passed its restart and in-game test. The repository download itself does not replace the need for host access; files must still be uploaded to the server’s actual mission path.
A safe repeatable restoration workflow
For future repairs, use the same order every time:
- Identify the running map and its mission directory.
- Stop the server and make a dated local backup.
- Choose the narrowest replacement scope that addresses the fault.
- Download the matching vanilla file or map folder from DayZ-Central-Economy.
- Compare it with the live and backed-up versions, preserving required custom blocks.
- Upload to the exact mission path, keeping root files and
db/files in their original locations. - Restart once, read the startup/RPT output, and test the affected behavior.
- Record which files changed and keep the previous version until the server has run normally.
This process gives you a reversible baseline without forcing a complete wipe. It also makes it clear whether a failure came from the selected XML, a related dependency, the upload path, or an unrelated mod configuration.

Only when you intend a complete reset and have a verified backup. Nitrado warns that reinstallation is fast but wipes every other change, so selective file replacement is safer for ordinary troubleshooting.
Why did the server ignore the uploaded XML?
Check that the server was restarted, the file was uploaded to the active mission path, the map directory matches the running map, and the filename and capitalization are correct. Then inspect the latest startup or RPT log.
