If lsusb identifies your fingerprint reader as Broadcom BCM58200 ControlVault 3, USB ID 0a5c:5843, a community-reported Debian 13 workaround is to install Broadcom’s proprietary Touch OEM Driver (TOD) plugin and firmware, then use a TOD-enabled build of libfprint that matches your installed version. This is not a routine Debian package installation: it replaces a system library and holds its Debian package, so treat it as a version-sensitive workaround with a rollback plan. The steps below are Fran Quinto’s report for a Latitude 5431, not official Debian guidance or a guarantee for other laptops. Read the original walkthrough.
Check that this is the supported reader
This procedure is specifically for Broadcom BCM58200 ControlVault 3 at USB ID 0a5c:5843. Installing fprintd and libpam-fprintd alone may still leave fprintd-enroll reporting “No devices available” for this device.

- Run
lsusband look for0a5c:5843. - Check the installed library version with
dpkg-query -W -f='${Version}n' libfprint-2-2. - If the USB ID differs, stop: these instructions do not establish support for that reader.
The Debian trixie package listing gives libfprint-2-2 version 1:1.94.9-1; check your machine rather than assuming that version is installed. Package listings and installed versions can change. Debian trixie package listing.

| Route | What it offers | Compatibility and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcom proprietary TOD plugin | Uses Broadcom’s closed plugin and firmware with a TOD-enabled libfprint intended to integrate with fprintd and PAM. |
Quinto reports using it on a Latitude 5431 with Debian 13.7, kernel 6.12.x and libfprint 1:1.94.9-1. The procedure replaces the system library and holds its package. This is a single-machine community report, not official Debian support. Walkthrough and setup details. |
| Community keyless TOD driver | Its project says it contains no vendor code and can provide integration through fprintd, PAM and desktop fingerprint panels. |
The project reports testing on a Latitude 5531 and validation on 2026-09-01 with libfprint-tod 1.94.8+tod1 and fprintd 1.94.5. That is a different validation combination from Debian trixie’s listed library version; compatibility with your setup and other ControlVault 3 models is not established. Use only one driver path at a time. Project and validation details. |
| Native upstream driver work | A native driver could avoid reliance on the TOD plugin interface if it is merged and released. | A driver catalogue described the relevant submission as an unmerged merge request, not part of a released libfprint. Check the supported-devices catalogue for current status. |
Understand the risks of the proprietary walkthrough
The walkthrough copies Broadcom’s TOD module and firmware, builds a TOD-enabled libfprint, replaces the system library file, creates a systemd override for fprintd, and places Debian’s libfprint-2-2 package on hold. Those changes can leave files outside normal dpkg package ownership and prevent ordinary package upgrades from updating the held library. A different libfprint version may introduce ABI incompatibility with the plugin.
#1 Best Overall
- BIOMETRIC SECURITY: USB fingerprint reader provides advanced biometric authentication to secure your computer and protect sensitive data with your unique fingerprint.
- ONE-TOUCH COMPUTER LOCK: Instantly lock your Windows computer with a single touch using the Win + L shortcut, providing quick security when stepping away from your desk.
- FAST AND ACCURATE SCANNING: High-precision optical sensor delivers reliable fingerprint recognition with quick response time for seamless login and authentication.
- PLUG AND PLAY CONVENIENCE: Simple USB connection with easy setup process allows you to start using fingerprint security within minutes without complex installation.
- COMPACT DESIGN: Sleek and portable biometric scanner features a space-saving footprint that fits comfortably on any desk without cluttering your workspace.
- Keep the installed library version and TOD-enabled build aligned; use the walkthrough’s matching fork tag and instructions rather than assuming a build for another version will work.
- Record the original package state and preserve the walkthrough’s backup and undo steps before replacing anything.
- Do not combine the proprietary route with the community keyless driver; both seek exclusive access to the same USB device.
- Keep password sign-in available while testing fingerprint authentication.
Quinto’s reported setup was Debian 13.7 with kernel 6.12.x and libfprint 1:1.94.9-1, published 2025-09-25. Those are the author’s tested conditions, not minimum requirements or a promise of compatibility with every trixie update. Follow the commands and rollback procedure in the original walkthrough only after confirming that its source tag matches your installed library.
Install and test without losing password access
The walkthrough enables fingerprint authentication using Debian’s pam-auth-update. Because the proprietary route replaces system components, first finish its driver and firmware setup, then test enrollment before relying on PAM at the login screen.

- Windows Hello for Windows 10/11 - Only works with Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs and laptops. Plug the USB fingerprint reader into your computer and sign in with one touch. Not compatible with Mac, macOS, Linux or Chrome OS.
- Plug-and-Play Fingerprint Login - No extra app is needed on most genuine Windows systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, set up fingerprint sign-in through Windows Hello, and unlock your PC without typing long passwords every time.
- Fast 0.5s 360° Recognition - Capacitive fingerprint technology supports quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition helps read your fingerprint from different angles for faster, smoother daily login.
- Compact Scanner for PC & Laptop + Multi-User Support - Small, lightweight USB design works well for desktops, laptops, office PCs and shared home computers without built-in fingerprint sensors. Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per user account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access.
- Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.
- Install and configure the chosen driver path using that project’s version-specific instructions; do not mix the two TOD implementations.
- Check that
fprintdcan see the sensor, then try enrolling a finger withfprintd-enroll. - Only after enrollment succeeds, use
sudo pam-auth-updateand enable the fingerprint authentication profile. Leave password authentication enabled as a fallback. - Test a new login while retaining a working password session or recovery route.
If the reader is still unavailable after setup
Check the ID and version pairing
Confirm the reader still appears as 0a5c:5843 in lsusb and compare your installed libfprint-2-2 version with the TOD-enabled build and plugin you installed. A mismatch is a reason to stop and restore a supported package state, not to keep mixing plugin and library versions.

On Quinto’s Latitude 5431, the first startup updated ControlVault firmware and then returned an initialization error. The reported firmware changed from AAI 5.9.13.0 / SBI 137 to AAI 5.15.21.0 / SBI 240. The author says a fprintd restart resolved that observed state. Do not interrupt a firmware flash; if a service restart does not restore detection, the walkthrough suggests a full power-off. This is one machine’s experience, not a guaranteed recovery sequence for every firmware revision. Firmware and startup notes.

Undo the library replacement if necessary
If the replacement causes problems, use the walkthrough’s reinstall-based undo procedure to restore Debian’s packaged library, then remove the package hold as directed there. Do not leave the system expecting dpkg to manage a library file that was manually copied over its packaged version. Refer to the source’s explicit backup and rollback instructions before making the change.
