Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou rarely have to type a video out by hand. The fastest route depends on where the video lives and what you can access. If the video already has captions, you can usually copy them directly. If it does not, a transcription tool built into a video platform or editor can generate the text, which you then correct. “Any video” needs a qualification: these methods cover common cases, but whether they work depends on captions, account permissions, the input format, the language, and file limits.
Start by checking for an existing transcript
Before generating anything, check whether the video already carries text. On YouTube, the transcript view displays the caption text alongside the video, and selecting a line jumps the playback to that moment. You can usually reach it from the description area below the video by choosing the transcript option. This only works when the video has captions available, which depends on the uploader having added them or on YouTube having generated automatic captions for that video. If the option is missing, the video has no caption track to show, and you will need one of the generation methods below.

Copying from the transcript view gives you plain text with timestamps in view, which is useful when you need to quote a specific passage or find where a point is made.
Generate a transcript in Microsoft 365 Stream
If the video is hosted in Microsoft 365 Stream, transcript generation is available for eligible videos. Microsoft’s documented limits for this feature are videos under 4 GB and under four hours in length. Once generated, you can correct the text in the transcript interface, and you can download the transcript as a WebVTT file for editing or reuse. Whether the feature is turned on for a given video depends on your organization’s settings, so if you do not see the option, ask whether transcript generation is enabled for your tenant. Language support and availability may also vary.

Use Premiere’s Speech to Text for a local video file
If you have the video file itself and already work in Adobe Premiere, its Speech to Text workflow can generate a transcript from the clip. The settings let you choose the language, turn on speaker labeling, select which audio track to analyze, and limit transcription to a marked portion of the timeline rather than the whole sequence. This suits editors who want timed text they can work with inside the project. It is less practical if you only need a quick copy of the words and do not otherwise use a video editor.
Transcribe extracted audio in Word
Word’s Transcribe feature accepts audio uploads, not a documented direct upload of a video file. If your source is a video, extract its audio track first, then upload that audio file. The output is a transcript with speaker separation and timestamps, which is useful for interviews and meetings.

Check the transcript before you rely on it
Automatic transcription can misread names, technical terms, and numbers, and it may get punctuation or speaker changes wrong. Before you publish a quote or use the text as a record, compare it against the recording. Pay particular attention to:
- Proper names, company names, and product names
- Technical terms and acronyms
- Numbers, dates, and figures
- Speaker labels, especially where people talk over each other
- Timestamps, if you plan to link to specific moments
Decide what “any video” covers in practice
The methods above handle the common situations: a captioned YouTube video, a video hosted in Microsoft 365 Stream, a local file you can open in Premiere, and audio you can extract and upload to Word. They do not cover every case. A video with no captions, hosted on a platform without a transcript feature, and stored only as a stream you cannot download, will need a separate tool, and the result will need the same review. When a method fails, the most common causes are a missing caption track, a file over the documented limit, or a feature that your organization has not enabled.
