To start a YouTube livestream, verify your channel, check that it meets YouTube’s age and restriction rules, enable live streaming, then choose mobile, webcam, encoder, or console streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so set it up before the day of your stream and test privately or as unlisted first.
Check whether your channel can go live
YouTube’s stated requirements are that a livestreamer be at least 16, have a verified channel, and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling an event, since platform rules can change.
Mobile streaming has additional requirements: YouTube says the channel needs at least 50 subscribers and a supported mobile device. Check the current mobile live-streaming requirements if you plan to broadcast from a phone.
Choose how you will stream
| Method | Best fit | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates, vlogging, and phone-first video | Use the YouTube app on a supported device and meet the mobile-specific eligibility requirements. |
| Webcam | A straightforward talking-head stream from a computer | You need a computer with a webcam; YouTube provides a webcam workflow. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video equipment | An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. You connect it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. |
| Console | Direct gameplay streaming from a supported modern console | Follow the instructions for your console maker and model. |
Choose based on the content, equipment you already have, production complexity, and whether you want a horizontal, vertical, or dual-format presentation. There is no single best method for every channel. YouTube outlines these routes in its live-streaming overview.

Set up your first YouTube livestream
- Sign in and verify your channel. Confirm the account meets YouTube’s age and restriction requirements. If you plan to stream from mobile, also check subscriber count and device support.
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming activation process. First activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until shortly before an event. See YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
- Pick your route. For a computer webcam stream, use YouTube’s webcam flow. For an encoder, open YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live, and create or select a stream. The encoder setup instructions explain how to provide the encoder with the server URL and stream key.
- Set the stream details. Enter a title and choose visibility in YouTube Studio. Encoder streams can be set to public, private, or unlisted. Keep the stream key private: it gives the encoder access to your broadcast setup.
- Check orientation and framing. Decide on horizontal, vertical, or dual-format before starting. YouTube says vertical livestreams can be surfaced in the Shorts feed on mobile; its format guidance also covers the dual horizontal/vertical option and configuring the vertical layout in Live Control Room.
- Run a test. Choose private or unlisted if you do not want the test publicly visible. Check the Live Control Room preview, listen for clear audio, inspect the picture, and confirm the stream is accessible with the expected visibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring audio and video quality.
- Go live, then end cleanly. Start from the relevant YouTube or encoder controls. When finished, end the broadcast using those controls and check the current Live Control Room instructions if the interface differs from these steps.
What equipment do you actually need?
You do not need to buy expensive equipment to begin. YouTube says to start with what you have: a computer webcam is enough for its webcam route, while a phone or supported console may make additional purchases unnecessary.
- USB webcam: Optional if your computer does not have a webcam and you want to use the webcam method. It is not required for mobile or console streaming.
- External microphone: An optional upgrade for an encoder-based setup; YouTube lists microphones among possible hardware. Choose one only if your existing audio is not adequate.
- Phone tripod or mount: An optional practical accessory for a stable, hands-free mobile shot. YouTube documents mobile streaming but does not prescribe a mount.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded video to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, rather than broadcasting a live camera or running a computer, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is YouTube-only and does not broadcast from a camera. Each slot streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, once per account; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
