In VS Code, install a Vim keymap extension, learn a few basic actions while editing ordinary text, and look up shortcuts when they conflict with your existing workflow. The extension changes editing keys; you continue using VS Code and its surrounding tools.
What Vim-style keybindings change—and what they do not
Vim-style editing is modal: the same keys can do different things depending on whether you are moving around or inserting text. A keymap extension brings that interaction into a host editor such as VS Code. It does not replace VS Code with the standalone Vim editor, so you can keep using the editor’s interface and other features.
VS Code describes keymap extensions as a way to adapt shortcuts from other editors, including Vim. See VS Code’s keyboard-shortcuts documentation.
Set up a Vim keymap in VS Code
- Open the keymap choices. In the Extensions Marketplace, browse the Keymaps category, or run Preferences: Keymaps from the Command Palette.
- Choose a Vim keymap extension. Install and enable the option that fits your needs. VS Code remains your editor; the extension changes the editing shortcuts it handles.
- Begin with its defaults. Make a few ordinary edits before adding remappings or other extensions. That gives you a chance to understand the basic modal interaction and notice any key conflicts.
Practice a few actions in real edits
Start with a scratch file or a low-stakes change in a document you can undo. Practice moving through text, entering and leaving insert mode, and making a simple change. Repeat those actions during normal editing instead of trying to memorize a long command list.

Microsoft’s Vim tutorial sample text puts the learning approach plainly: “Remember that you should be learning by doing, not memorization.” Treat that as practical advice, not a promise that a particular routine or timeline will work for everyone.
Find and resolve shortcut conflicts
If a key does something unexpected, search for the command in VS Code’s Keyboard Shortcuts editor rather than fighting the behavior. There you can change, remove, or reset shortcuts. The displayed shortcuts can depend on your active keyboard layout, so check what VS Code shows on your own system.

VS Code also provides a printable reference for its default shortcuts. Use it to distinguish a host-editor shortcut from a Vim mapping when diagnosing a conflict; the reference covers VS Code defaults, not necessarily every extension’s behavior. Choose between a Vim keymap, Neovim-backed editing, and native shortcuts

These approaches differ in how much they emulate or delegate editing behavior, but the cited documentation does not establish a controlled comparison of speed, reliability, or user outcomes. You can also disable or remove a keymap if it disrupts work; check the extension’s controls in VS Code before relying on a specific disable workflow.

Customize only when you have a specific friction point
VSCodeVim documents mode-specific remappings. One optional example maps jj to Escape while in insert mode. This can suit someone who prefers that sequence, but it is not required for a beginner and may not suit your typing habits. Start with defaults, then add a mapping only when you know what problem it solves. See the VSCodeVim documentation for its mapping settings.
