Start with Gothic (2001), then play Gothic II—ideally the Complete Classic edition, which includes Night of the Raven—and continue with Gothic 3. You should not expect your Gothic save, character build, or choices to carry into Gothic II. Save transfers between later entries are not established by the available sources.
Recommended Gothic play order
- Gothic (2001): Begin with the original game, which starts the Nameless Hero’s story.
- Gothic II Complete Classic: Continue the story in Gothic II. This edition includes Night of the Raven, so you do not need to treat the expansion as a separate sequel or buy it as a separate step. THQ Nordic’s official page describes the game as a continuation of the Nameless Hero’s story.
- Gothic 3: Play the third numbered game after Gothic II to continue through the main trilogy. THQ Nordic announced console releases of the classic trilogy in 2026; its announcement also mentions Gothic 3 Classic for Switch 2. Check the listing for your platform and territory before buying. See the console-release announcement.
Can you start with Gothic 1 Remake?
Yes. Gothic 1 Remake retells the opening story, so it can take the place of the 2001 original in this order; it is not an additional sequel chapter. THQ Nordic says the remake was rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 while retaining the original’s story and atmosphere. Its official page lists a June 5, 2026 launch and availability on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Check the official remake page for current platform and purchase options.

From Gothic to Gothic II
Plan to start Gothic II fresh rather than importing your first game’s progress, character build, or choices. A GOG community reply says nothing carries over and that Gothic II accounts for starting over. The original Gothic manual documents saving and loading within that game, but does not document a cross-game import system. Because the direct no-transfer answer located is community-sourced rather than an official technical specification, treat this as practical guidance, not a guarantee for every platform or edition.

From Gothic II to Gothic 3, or from the remake to a classic game
The available official sources do not establish whether Gothic II progress transfers into Gothic 3, or whether saves from Gothic 1 Remake work with the classic games. Do not assume either transfer is supported; check version-specific documentation if it matters to your purchase or playthrough.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which edition should a newcomer buy?
- For the original opening: Choose Gothic (2001) if you want to play the classic first release.
- For a rebuilt opening: Choose Gothic 1 Remake instead if its presentation and platform availability suit you. It covers the first story, not a later point in the sequence.
- For the sequel and expansion: Look for Gothic II Complete Classic, which bundles Gothic II and Night of the Raven. THQ Nordic announced its PlayStation and Xbox launch for September 29, 2026. Confirm that the listing is the right platform and edition for you. Official edition details.
There is no need to buy every version of the first game or seek out an import file before starting the sequel. Pick one opening-game version, continue with the bundled Gothic II edition if it is available to you, and then move on to Gothic 3.
