Start by learning your game’s controls, then treat each fight as a sequence of observation, defense, and measured attacks. Keep enough stamina—or the game’s equivalent resource—to react, and explore elsewhere when a route or boss is too demanding. The details vary across Soulslike games, so the examples below use Elden Ring mechanics where noted rather than presenting them as genre-wide rules.
What to learn before your first difficult fight
Spend a few minutes with the game’s controller or key-binding screen before you rely on muscle memory. Identify how to move, adjust the camera, lock onto a target, attack, guard, dodge, and use an item. These actions form a useful starting vocabulary, but button layouts and available mechanics differ from game to game. Watch an attack before choosing your response
Many actions commit your character to an animation. A long attack may not be easy to cancel, and rolling repeatedly can carry you into danger rather than out of it. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring combat guide emphasizes patience and warns about panic rolling. Its concise advice is: “Patience is key in ELDEN RING.”

Try a short practice loop: observe an enemy’s wind-up, choose one defensive response, wait for a recovery or other opening, then make one or two attacks and reset your position. This keeps the focus on reading the opponent and managing your commitment instead of pressing every available button.
Choose one defensive option to practice
Dodge, guard, and parry are not interchangeable. A dodge can avoid an incoming attack if timed and directed well. A shield or other guard may absorb or reduce an attack, but in Elden Ring guarding can consume stamina. Parrying is a timing-sensitive, higher-risk option described in the official guide; it is not a requirement for learning the game. Practice one defense at a time so you can see what it does and when it leaves you vulnerable.

How to manage stamina
Think of stamina as an action budget, not a bar to empty as quickly as possible. In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco’s 2021 starter guide explains that stamina recovers over time, is not consumed outside combat, and reaching zero prevents further actions that use it. Attacking, dodging, blocking, and other actions may compete for stamina, so spending the full bar on offense can leave you without a response.
Use a simple rule in early encounters: after an attack or two, pause long enough to recover and reassess rather than automatically continuing a combo. If you block, dodge, or attack and find yourself unable to respond, adjust by making fewer actions before creating space. Exact costs, regeneration behavior, and defensive rules depend on the game.

How exploration helps you make progress
Use landmarks and notes to orient yourself
In Elden Ring, Guidance of Grace points toward important locations, while map markers can help you track discoveries or places to revisit. Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview describes these navigation aids and the option to leave a difficult encounter and return later. Other games may use different maps, checkpoints, quest cues, or no equivalent guidance system.
Leave a difficult encounter and look for useful options
If a boss or area feels overwhelming, it can be productive to explore another route instead of repeating the same attempt immediately. In Elden Ring, exploration can uncover equipment, weapon upgrades, healing improvements, recipes, and Spirit Ashes. Those are examples of that game’s systems, not features to expect in every Soulslike.

Before deciding that you must defeat a particular enemy right now, check nearby paths and map locations, review what upgrades or consumables are available, and consider whether another area offers a better next step. The publisher’s overview of Elden Ring also describes Spirit Ash summons and cooperative play as ways to approach challenges. Use assistance if it suits you; it is an option, not a measure of whether you are playing correctly.

There is no single objectively best first game established by these sources. Choose based on the structure and play style you want: for example, Elden Ring offers an open world and flexibility to approach challenges in different orders. Bandai Namco contrasts that structure with earlier Souls games’ more interconnected, linear paths, while noting that timing, observation, and patience remain central to combat. When considering another title, look for information about how open or linear its world is, whether you can defer difficult encounters, what its combat emphasizes, and what assistance or build choices it offers. Those differences matter more than a universal difficulty label.
