Start with PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS’ refreshed Basic Training, then play a few matches with one goal at a time: land safely, find equipment, watch the Blue Zone, and move before it closes. Choose Solo to learn alone, Duo to play with one teammate, or Squad for a team of four. Map choices rotate by region, so the map directory is not a promise that every map will appear in your lobby.
How to play PUBG?
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is a last-survivor battle royale. You choose where to land, search for equipment, fight other players, and stay inside the safe area as the Blue Zone shrinks. The match ends when one player or team remains.

- Pick a landing place. Your first job is to reach the ground and get oriented. If you are learning alone, avoid making your first objective a fight; focus on landing where you can begin exploring.
- Find equipment. Search buildings and nearby areas for useful items. Learn how to recognize and collect equipment before worrying about perfect loadouts.
- Track the Blue Zone. Check where the safe area is and how much time remains. Do not wait until the zone is on top of you to start moving.
- Move toward safety. Keep the next destination in mind while looting. The safe area changes, so a place that was useful a moment ago may no longer be a good place to stay.
- Fight when you must, and survive. Combat matters, but eliminating opponents is not the only task: remaining alive and inside the safe area is essential to winning.
After each match, pick one part of this sequence to improve. For example, concentrate on reaching the ground under control in one match, then on watching the zone in the next. This makes it easier to notice what is causing trouble than trying to judge every decision at once.

Make the survival loop manageable
A useful beginner routine is to think about the next task, not the whole match. Once you land, get oriented and look for equipment. While searching, keep the Blue Zone and the route to safety in mind. When it is time to move, stop treating nearby loot as the only priority. The game’s central decisions repeat—where to land, what to collect, when to move, and how to respond to opponents—so each match gives you another chance to practice that sequence.
It is normal for an early match to end before you feel ready. A short match can still teach you whether landing, finding items, reading the zone, or deciding when to move was the hardest part. Use that observation to choose a focus for the next match rather than trying to change every habit at once.
Complete Basic Training before your first serious match
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS’ Update 42.2 notes, published in 2026, describe refreshed Basic Training and a Beginner Training system. The notes say Basic Training takes about 10 minutes and covers controls, Blue Zone survival, items, communication, reviving, and driving. It is the most direct way to encounter the basic actions before a live match.
Take the time to follow the training rather than treating it as a formality. Its topics map to the decisions you will make in a real match: how to control your character, find and use items, communicate, travel, and respond when the zone or a teammate creates pressure. The official overview also lists Training Mode at Camp Jackal for practicing weapons, equipment, parachuting, and driving. Use that practice area when you want to repeat a particular skill rather than learn it for the first time under match pressure.
One way to get more out of training is to separate learning a control from using it under pressure. Pay attention to the control explanations, then use practice time to repeat the actions that feel unfamiliar. If you are playing with others, notice the communication and revive topics as well as movement and equipment; team play brings decisions that do not arise in the same way when you play alone.
Update 42.2 is the documented addition to rely on for the current training advice here. A 2026 roadmap also discussed a planned onboarding redesign, but a roadmap describes forward-looking plans; it is not evidence that every planned change shipped. Do not assume a feature exists just because it appeared in roadmap language.
Choose Solo, Duo, or Squad based on how you want to learn
The official game overview describes three core team sizes. Solo means playing alone; Duo pairs two players; Squad supports a team of four. Your choice affects whether you can learn at your own pace or rely on teammates for communication and revives.

| Mode | Team size | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | One player | You want to make every decision yourself and learn without coordinating with a team. |
| Duo | Two players | You have one teammate and want to practice communicating and making decisions together. |
| Squad | Four players | You want to play as a larger team and learn the team-play concepts covered in training, such as reviving. |
There is no single best beginner mode. Solo gives you room to set your own pace, while playing with others adds coordination to the learning curve. If you choose Duo or Squad, communicate what you are doing and pay attention to teammates instead of treating the match as four separate solo games.
Choose based on what you want to practice, not on a promise that one mode will make every match easier. Solo lets you concentrate on your own decisions. Duo and Squad give you a reason to communicate and make plans as a group, and Update 42.2’s training topics include reviving and team play. If you have a friend to play with, Duo is the two-player option; a four-player group fits Squad. If you would rather work through the basic loop independently, Solo is the straightforward choice.
Arcade can include other formats, but its offerings are not necessarily permanent. Update 42.2 documented Hot Drop and Solo Deathmatch with service windows in July and August 2026; those windows had ended by October 13, 2026. Do not count on those specific modes being playable now. Check the live in-game menu for current Arcade availability.
Understand the map list—and why your lobby may show only some maps
PUBG’s official map directory names Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Karakin, Paramo, Taego, Deston, Vikendi, and Rondo. It is a directory of maps, not a guarantee that all nine will be available in every region, queue, or rotation at the same time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Two official map descriptions offer a useful first comparison. KRAFTON describes Erangel as an 8×8 map with grasslands, mountains, cities, and towns. It describes Sanhok as a 4×4 map where the smaller space leads to faster-paced battles. Those descriptions can help set expectations: Erangel offers a larger landscape to navigate, while Sanhok’s smaller footprint is associated with quicker encounters. The official descriptions cited here do not establish equivalent size or pace details for every other map, so do not infer them from the map names alone.
For a new player, the practical difference in those descriptions is scale and pace, not a guarantee about what any one match will feel like. Erangel’s 8×8 size and varied terrain mean there is a larger landscape to navigate. Sanhok’s 4×4 size is explicitly associated with faster-paced battles. Neither description says which map is better for every beginner; use them as broad expectations and learn to check the lobby for what is actually in service.
Map service changes by region and rotates. In an August 11, 2026 developer letter, PUBG said that service in North America (NA), South America (SA), Europe (EU), Russia (RU), and Console had moved from five map-selection slots to three after an initial service period. For the regions and platform named in that letter, the arrangement was one fixed Erangel slot plus two rotating slots: one large 8×8 map and one small map. The letter said detailed lineups would be shared in a future map-service report; it does not establish that the same lineup applies everywhere or remains unchanged today.

Before choosing a map or planning around one, check the options shown in your lobby or the latest map-service report for your region and platform. A map’s presence in the directory does not mean you can select it in the current rotation. If the map lineup differs from what you expected, that is not necessarily a problem with your game: the dated service information is regional, and availability can change.
What are the basic game commands? PC keyboard and mouse controls
The following defaults are from PUBG Support’s PC keyboard-and-mouse command list. They are not console instructions or PUBG Mobile touch controls. PUBG Support’s control articles are older, so confirm the bindings in your own game, especially if you have changed them.
| Action | PC default |
|---|---|
| Move | W, A, S, D |
| Crouch / prone | C / Z |
| Jump or vault | Space |
| Sprint / walk | Shift / Ctrl |
| Auto-run | = |
| Lean left / right | Q / E |
| Toggle perspective | V |
| Aim / switch to scope or ADS view | Hold right mouse button to aim; tap right mouse button to toggle scope or ADS view |
| Cycle weapons | Mouse wheel or default keys 1, 2, and 3 |
These commands cover movement, posture, view, aiming, and weapon selection—the basics most likely to come up as you learn to navigate and respond. A command can behave differently if you or another player has changed the binding, so treat this list as the documented default rather than an unchangeable rule.
Learn the controls in useful groups
It can be easier to learn the list by grouping related actions. WASD moves your character; Shift and Ctrl cover sprinting and walking; the equals key is listed for auto-run. C and Z change posture, while Space is used to jump or vault. Q and E are the lean controls, V toggles perspective, and the mouse button behavior distinguishes holding aim from tapping to toggle scope or ADS view. The mouse wheel and keys 1, 2, and 3 are listed for cycling weapons.
You do not need to memorize every command before starting. Begin with movement and posture, then learn the view, aim, and weapon controls as you practice. This grouping is a learning aid, not a claim that any control is more important in every situation. If a binding feels unfamiliar, check it rather than repeatedly guessing during a match.

- Open Settings > Control in the game.
- Find the action you want to check, such as crouch, lean, or aim.
- Review its assigned key or mouse input. If you change it, use a binding you can remember and reach comfortably.
- Return to training or practice and confirm that the action works as expected before relying on it in a match.
Menu wording and defaults can change, and PUBG Support’s control documentation is older. If the path or a listed binding does not match your version, use the controls shown in your in-game settings. Console controls and PUBG Mobile touch layouts are platform-specific and are not covered by this PC list.
A standard PC keyboard and mouse are the input devices relevant to this control list. The documented defaults can be changed in the game’s control settings, so there is no need to assume that a particular binding—or new hardware—is required. If you use a different platform, look up its own preset rather than carrying over the PC commands.

A practical first-session checklist
- Complete Basic Training and pay attention to the Blue Zone, items, communication, reviving, and driving sections.
- Choose Solo if you want to learn without teammates, Duo for a two-player team, or Squad for a team of four.
- In your first matches, focus on landing, looting, watching the zone, and moving in time rather than trying to optimize every fight.
- Check the lobby for the maps actually available in your region and platform.
- Confirm any unfamiliar PC command in Settings > Control before a match.
A simple sequence keeps the first session focused: finish the roughly 10-minute Basic Training, choose the team size that suits you, and enter a match with one learning goal. Afterward, identify which part of the loop needs attention and use Training Mode at Camp Jackal for repeatable practice with weapons, equipment, parachuting, or driving. Check the lobby and your control settings when either the map choices or key bindings do not match what you expected.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to play PUBG for the first time?
Complete the refreshed Basic Training, then focus on the core loop: choose where to land, find equipment, watch the Blue Zone, move toward safety, and survive. Pick one part of that sequence to work on in each match.
How long does PUBG Basic Training take?
PUBG’s Update 42.2 notes say Basic Training takes about 10 minutes. It covers controls, Blue Zone survival, items, communication, reviving, and driving.
Should a beginner play Solo, Duo, or Squad?
Choose Solo to learn alone, Duo for a two-player team, or Squad for a team of four. Solo removes team coordination from your first decisions; Duo and Squad let you practice communication and team play.
Are all nine PUBG maps available in every region?

Are these PUBG controls for console or PUBG Mobile?
No. The listed defaults are for PC keyboard and mouse. Console controls and PUBG Mobile touch controls are different; check the in-game preset for your platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I change PUBG’s PC key bindings?
Yes. PUBG Support’s control guide says key settings can be changed in Settings > Control. Verify the current menu and bindings in your game, since the support documentation is older.
The Bottom Line
For a focused start, complete Basic Training, learn the landing-to-safe-zone loop, and choose Solo, Duo, or Squad according to how you want to play. Treat the map directory and PC control list as guides, not guarantees: check your regional lobby and your own in-game settings.
