How to Get Started With NASA Robotics Challenges for Students

Find the right NASA student challenge by school level, location, and goals. See how to start with 2027 Lunabotics and distinguish NASA’s FRC grant from FIRST registration.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by matching a challenge to the student’s school level, location, and goals. Eligible U.S. college, university, vocational, and technical-school teams can look at NASA’s 2027 Lunabotics challenge; middle-school, high-school, college, and international teams can consider the Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC). NASA also offers a grant route for U.S. teams in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), but its 2027 application deadline was September 30, 2026. Each program has its own rules and entry process.

Choose a challenge that fits the team

Opportunity Who it may fit What students do Entry route and current timing
Lunabotics Students at eligible U.S. higher-education, vocational, or technical institutions; confirm details in the current guidebook. Design and build a prototype robot for off-world construction. Use the 2027 guidebook and NASA’s listed design-review deliverables. The event is scheduled for May 24–27, 2027, at Kennedy Space Center; a design-review down-select means baseline eligibility does not guarantee selection.
Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) U.S. and international middle-school, high-school, and college/university teams, according to NASA’s student-opportunity directory. Take part in a hands-on engineering challenge. Check the current HERC page for that season’s rules and dates.
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) with NASA grant U.S. FRC teams; NASA says the grant cannot support teams outside the United States. Compete in FIRST Robotics Competition. NASA’s grant is a separate funding route, not a general grant for all robotics competitions. A FIRST team number is needed to begin a NASA grant application. NASA’s portal registration does not register a team with FIRST. The 2027 grant application closed September 30, 2026.
Other Robotics Alliance Project activities Teams should check each activity’s own eligibility and season rules. NASA’s directory says the Robotics Alliance Project supports BEST Robotics, Botball, and FIRST. Consult the relevant program’s current information.
RASC-AL U.S.-based collegiate teams. Develop an aerospace-systems concept supported by engineering and analysis; it is not a robot-building contest. The announced 2027 notice of intent is due October 13, 2026; proposals and videos are due February 24, 2027.

How to begin with 2027 Lunabotics

NASA’s Lunabotics page links to the AMF Center for Space Education guidebook, released September 17, 2026. Use that guidebook as the controlling source for eligibility details, required submissions, evaluation criteria, and instructions. NASA’s summary describes the opportunity as intended for students attending eligible institutions in the United States, its commonwealths, territories, or possessions. Check the guidebook for the team’s exact fit.

Work backward from the listed schedule

NASA says the listed deliverables are due by noon Eastern Time on each appointed date. Confirm deadlines and submission requirements in the live guidebook before planning around them.

Date Milestone
September 17, 2026 Challenge guidebook released
October 6, 2026 Project Management Plan; institutional and faculty support statements; rights-of-use statement
November 20, 2026 Preliminary Design Review report
December 14, 2026 Team selections announced
January 15, 2027 Student and faculty registration and other listed administrative deliverables
April 8, 2027 Systems Engineering Paper
April 29, 2027 Robot Data Report and Proof of Life Review
May 20–21, 2027 Practice runs at Kennedy Space Center
May 24–27, 2027 Construction runs at Kennedy Space Center

Put the early steps in motion

  1. Check institutional and team eligibility. Read the current guidebook rather than relying only on the short NASA summary.
  2. Download the guidebook from NASA’s Lunabotics page. Identify every deliverable, required format, evaluation criterion, and submission instruction.
  3. Secure school and faculty support. The first listed deadline, October 6, 2026, includes a project plan and support statements, so teams need to organize early.
  4. Plan for selection and travel. The design-review process selects teams for the event; plan against the listed Kennedy Space Center dates, subject to the guidebook and current program updates.
  5. Ask program-specific questions. NASA lists [email protected] as the contact for questions the official documentation does not resolve.

Understand the difference between eligibility and selection

Meeting baseline eligibility is not admission to the event. NASA says the 2027 Lunabotics program will use a design-review down-select to fit the number of teams the event can accommodate. The guidebook provides the detailed requirements teams must satisfy.

For context only, NASA reported that 47 teams reached the 2026 qualifying round and 10 advanced to finals. Those are 2026 figures, not a published 2027 team cap.

Keep NASA’s FRC grant separate from competition registration

NASA’s 2026–2027 grant page applies specifically to FIRST Robotics Competition teams, not to robotics competitions generally. A team needs its FIRST team number before beginning a NASA grant application, and registration in NASA’s portal does not register the team for FIRST. NASA lists institutional support, surveys, a completed competition robot, and an annual report for selected teams among the requirements. The application window for the 2027 grant closed September 30, 2026.

Plan for the real workload, not just the build

Lunabotics requires more than a working robot: NASA’s listed submissions include project management, design review, systems engineering, robot data, and proof-of-life materials alongside a functional prototype. NASA says the 2027 event returns to a one-week format at the Astronauts Memorial Foundation’s Center for Space Education at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex, with no qualification activity at UCF. The change follows feedback about travel, academic calendars, faculty availability, and institutional approvals. Teams should still check current program and school travel requirements.
