While doing this, sample the four vehicle classes instead of assuming one is best, and use free exploration, collecting, customization and Track Builder as optional layers around the main progression.
Nintendo’s US product listing gives the Nintendo Switch 2 edition a September 10, 2026 release date. The guidance below sticks to the progression and play options Nintendo describes, and flags areas—such as button mappings, exact class statistics and Track Builder menus—that the listing does not document.

Prepare your first session
Make room for the installation
Nintendo lists a 12.7 GB file size. Check the available storage on your Nintendo Switch 2 before downloading so the installation does not stop partway through. The listed figure is the product-page size; the page does not state how much additional space future updates might use.
Choose a play format
You can begin alone, invite people to share one console, or plan an online session. Local split-screen supports up to four players on one system. Online sessions support two to 12 players, but Nintendo says online play is limited to Nintendo Switch users and requires an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership.
The game page does not specify the exact controller arrangement for four-player local play. If several people will play on one console, confirm the supported controller combination in the game’s on-screen instructions before buying or assigning extra controllers.

Nintendo’s listing does not publish a complete tutorial sequence, button-by-button controls, class-by-class acceleration or handling numbers, an optimal event order, or a detailed Track Builder walkthrough. The practical steps in this guide therefore describe what to pursue, not which button to press. Use the in-game tutorial and prompts for the control details shown on your system.
Your first progression loop
Follow this cycle on the first island. It gives you a clear objective without treating optional systems as mandatory.
Rank #2
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Start by exploring the island. Move through the open world and identify the events and activities available around you. Exploration is part of the game’s stated design, so you do not need to treat the first race as the only useful activity.
- Enter an available event. Complete events as you encounter them. Nintendo explicitly connects event completion with unlocking the island’s Rush Master challenge, making events the most reliable starting route.
- Mix in activities and discovery. Between races, look for secrets, smashable obstacles and other activities described for the island. This lets you learn the space and progress through more than one type of task without claiming that any particular activity is required.
- Watch for the Rush Master unlock. Continue completing the island’s events until its Rush Master challenge becomes available. The official listing does not state a shortcut or a best event order, so avoid waiting for a universal route that Nintendo has not documented.
- Take on the Rush Master. When the challenge is unlocked, enter it and try to defeat the island boss. A victory awards a car and a title according to Nintendo’s progression description.
- Move to the next island when ready. The game contains four islands. Treat each one as a new loop of events, activities and a Rush Master rather than assuming that one island’s layout or event sequence applies unchanged to the others.
This approach keeps the first session focused: events establish progress, exploration supplies context and the Rush Master provides a visible island goal. Collection, customization and creation tools can be added whenever you want a break from competitive events.
How the island progression works
Events are the documented gateway
The official product description makes one progression relationship explicit: completing events unlocks the Rush Master challenge for that island. It does not publish a mission tree, required completion percentage or recommended order. If you are deciding between two available events, choose the one whose course and vehicle feel you want to practice rather than searching for an unverified “correct” sequence.
Rush Masters are island milestones
Each island has its own Rush Master. Defeating that boss awards both a car and a title, so the challenge is more than a race selected at random: it is the named milestone attached to that island. If the challenge is not yet available, return to the island’s events and activities rather than assuming a vehicle purchase or Track Builder project is missing.
Progress across four different spaces
Because there are four islands, keep your objectives local. Finish the event work that belongs to the island you are currently exploring, learn its routes and landmarks, and then use the resulting Rush Master reward as a clear point at which to change focus. The listing does not establish whether island access is linear or freely selectable, so follow the access shown by your game rather than relying on a presumed unlock order.
Choosing among the four vehicle classes
Nintendo names four classes and says they offer different ways to race. It does not publish numerical ratings or a recommended starter class on the product page. The most defensible beginner method is to test several classes in comparable events and keep notes on which one you can control comfortably.

| Class | What is established | Beginner decision method |
|---|---|---|
| Versatiles | One of the four named vehicle classes; Nintendo describes the classes as different ways to race. | Try it in an event with turns and obstacles, then judge whether its behavior feels predictable to you. |
| Titans | One of the four named vehicle classes; no official handling chart is provided on the listing. | Use an event you can repeat and compare your control, recovery and confidence with another class. |
| Drifters | One of the four named vehicle classes; exact drift or cornering values are not published. | Sample it on a route where you can observe how comfortable you are entering and leaving bends. |
| Speeders | One of the four named vehicle classes; Nintendo does not state acceleration or top-speed figures on the listing. | Test it on a familiar event so your choice reflects handling you experienced, not a guessed statistic. |
Do not infer that a class name guarantees a specific numerical advantage. The page does not provide acceleration, top speed, boost, grip or durability data. Treat your first few events as a controlled comparison: use the same route when possible, notice how often you miss a line or hit an obstacle, and select the class that helps you finish consistently.
Exploration, activities and the vehicle collection
Use free exploration as a learning tool
The islands are not described as menus connecting isolated races. Nintendo highlights free exploration, secrets, obstacles to smash and activities. Driving between events can help you recognize landmarks and discover optional interactions, while also giving you a low-pressure way to become familiar with each island’s space.
Collect more than 150 vehicles over time
The listing says the game contains more than 150 vehicles and that vehicles are collected through events, activities and challenges. That makes the collection a broad reason to revisit content, but it does not establish that every vehicle is needed for the island progression. Start with the car you control well, then let completed activities and challenges expand your garage.
Customize when you want, not because you must
Nintendo says vehicles can be customized down to the wheels. The product description does not identify which cosmetic parts affect performance, if any, or tie customization to Rush Master access. For a first session, treat customization as a way to make a vehicle your own and return to it after you understand the event loop.
Building tracks with the Track Builder
Track Builder lets you create routes using the existing world. Nintendo specifically describes attaching modules to the ground, building around buildings and sending a route above the city. The result can be more than a flat circuit: the island’s structures and vertical space are part of the design area.
Rank #4
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
The official listing explains the creative scope but not the menu path, module catalog, save process or control mapping. Begin with a small route that you can recognize, then experiment with a turn, a route around a building or an elevated section. Use the on-screen builder instructions for the exact placement and testing commands shown in your edition. Do not assume that a custom route is required to unlock a Rush Master; Nintendo presents Track Builder as an additional feature, while the documented progression link is event completion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Picking the right multiplayer mode
| Mode | Players | Requirements and planning notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | One | Useful for learning island layouts, comparing vehicle classes and progressing at your own pace. |
| Local split-screen | Up to four on one system | Good for a shared-console session. Nintendo’s page does not specify the exact controller configuration, so verify it in the game before a group play session. |
| Online | Two to 12 | Requires an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says online play is limited to Nintendo Switch users. |
If you are learning the game, start solo long enough to understand how events unlock the island challenge. Local or online play can then become a social activity rather than a substitute for learning the progression. For local play, arrange controllers before inviting a full group; the product listing confirms the player count but not the specific Joy-Con or controller split.
Purchases, downloadable content and what is optional
Nintendo’s listings identify a Vehicle Pass and several downloadable content packs, and mark the game as containing in-game purchases. The available information does not say that a pass or pack is required to begin events, unlock Rush Masters or complete the four-island progression described above. Start with the base game and consider add-ons only after you know which vehicles or content you actually want.
The same caution applies to accessories and physical merchandise. A second controller may be useful for local split-screen, but the game page does not establish a specific controller requirement or retail bundle. Confirm compatibility and the exact product details before buying equipment for a group session.

Common beginner questions and sensible checks
“I cannot find the Rush Master.”
Return to the island’s events and continue completing them. Nintendo’s documented relationship is event completion first, Rush Master unlock second. Because no completion threshold or event order is published, use the in-game map or prompts to identify remaining events rather than assuming a hidden purchase or custom track is needed.
Best Value
- The Joy-Con 2 (L) controller includes the Capture Button.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
“Which class should I choose?”
There is no verified easiest class in the product listing. Try the four named classes on a repeatable event and keep the one that gives you the most controllable results. A class that sounds fast or powerful is not automatically the best fit for your route or driving style.
“Do I need to build a track before progressing?”
No such requirement is stated. Track Builder is described as a creative feature, while event completion is the stated route to a Rush Master. You can explore the builder after establishing your normal island progression.
“Can I play with friends without a subscription?”
For online play, Nintendo lists a Nintendo Account, an internet connection and a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local split-screen is a different option on one system; its player limit is listed, but the required controller setup is not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Are downloadable packs needed for the first island?”
The listings identify a Vehicle Pass and packs but do not say they are necessary for the described base progression. Treat them as optional content unless the game or a later product description clearly states otherwise.
