To get walking directions that avoid stairs, turn on Google Maps’ wheelchair-accessible option in walking route settings. Google says it can provide stair-free routes on iOS and Android where route data is available—but it does not guarantee every route or destination will be covered.

In the Google Maps app, request directions to your destination and select the walking mode.

These steps follow Google’s October 17, 2023 instructions for iOS and Android. Google also says a wheelchair-accessible preference already selected for transit is applied to walking routes.

What the option does—and what it does not promise
Google describes the walking option as a way to request stair-free routes. It is not a general “easier walk” setting: the documented promise is about stairs, not hills, busy sidewalks, surface conditions, or every other difficulty a pedestrian might encounter. Google says the feature is rolling out globally on iOS and Android wherever it has the necessary data, but does not provide a complete country-by-country coverage list. Availability for a particular city or route is therefore not guaranteed. Google’s announcement does not quantify how many stairs, miles, or minutes the option might save, nor does it independently verify the accessibility of a specific route.
Walking routes, transit routes, and Accessible Places are different features
| Feature | What it is for | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelchair-accessible walking routes | Requests stair-free walking routes where route data is available. | Walking directions, then the three-dot menu and route options, as described in Google’s 2023 announcement. |
| Wheelchair-accessible transit routes | Filters transit directions for wheelchair-accessible route options. | On Android, choose Transit, tap Options, select Wheelchair accessible under Routes, then choose a route. Google documents a separate workflow for computer transit directions. Android accessibility help and computer accessibility help |
| Accessible Places | Shows accessibility details for a place, such as entrance, restroom, seating, parking, or elevator accessibility. | Place information in Maps; availability is limited to certain countries. This is destination information, not a stair-free route filter. Google’s Android accessibility help |
Google introduced Accessible Places in 2020 as a way to surface wheelchair-accessibility information on place profiles, distinct from selecting a walking route. Its post reported historical contribution totals at that time; those figures do not measure the coverage of the walking-route option. Google’s 2020 Accessible Places announcement

- Up To 8 Adjustable Height: Rehand adjustable cane fits for people from 5'(152cm) to 6'5''(195cm). 8 adjustable height with one-inch increments makes almost all seniors, elderly and injured persons can easily adjust the cane to proper height fitting user's height. The adjusting range of walking stick itself is from 2'7'' (78cm) to 3'2'' (96cm)
Check the route and destination details
Use the setting as routing guidance, not as a universal accessibility guarantee. Route data may be incomplete, and a stair-free route does not establish that every segment or the destination itself meets a person’s needs. Where available, check the destination’s Accessible Places details as a separate step; those details cover place attributes rather than the full walking journey.
