To get sound from an outdoor projector, use its built-in speaker if it is loud enough for your audience; otherwise connect a compatible Bluetooth speaker, HDMI ARC soundbar or receiver, or wired audio device. The right option depends on the projector’s audio outputs and the speaker’s inputs, so check both manuals or port labels before connecting.
Choose a connection that both devices support
Projectors and audio equipment do not all have the same ports or wireless features. Identify the projector’s audio outputs and the speaker, soundbar, or receiver’s inputs first. Then choose among these options:

| Connection | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in speaker | A simple setup, a small audience, or a space where the projector’s sound is already adequate | Try it in the actual viewing area; outdoor conditions can make sound seem less effective than it does indoors. |
| Bluetooth | A projector that supports Bluetooth audio output and a speaker that accepts it | Confirm audio output support, pairing, range, battery, and possible audio delay. |
| HDMI ARC | A projector and soundbar or AV receiver with compatible HDMI ARC ports | Use the designated ARC ports and follow both devices’ instructions for cable and settings. |
| Optical or other wired audio | A projector with an audio output that matches the speaker or receiver’s input | Check the manual for the exact port and supported audio format; not every projector has optical or analog audio out. |
No connection is best for every setup. Bluetooth avoids running an audio cable but depends on a stable wireless link; ARC can route audio over HDMI when both devices support it; a wired audio connection is an option only when the ports match.
Use a Bluetooth speaker
Bluetooth is convenient when the projector can send audio to a Bluetooth device. The menu labels and steps vary by model. LG’s instructions, for example, note that availability and menus may differ across projectors; use your model’s manual for exact controls. LG’s Bluetooth projector instructions provide one manufacturer’s pairing guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Turn on the speaker and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On the projector, open its Bluetooth or audio-output settings and search for available devices.
- Select the speaker from the list and complete pairing if prompted.
- Set the projector’s sound output to the paired Bluetooth speaker, then play audio to confirm it works.
If dialogue and picture do not stay in sync, check whether the projector or speaker offers a way to adjust audio delay, or consider a compatible wired connection. Low latency is a useful specification to check when choosing a portable Bluetooth speaker, but it does not guarantee compatibility or eliminate delay in every setup. TechRadar’s outdoor cinema guidance identifies low latency as a useful sync consideration.
If Bluetooth audio drops or will not pair
- Make sure the speaker is charged and is not muted.
- Check that it is in pairing mode and is not already connected to another device.
- Move the speaker closer to the projector and reduce obstacles between them.
- Check for nearby sources of radio interference.
- Try pairing again, then confirm the projector still has the Bluetooth speaker selected as its sound output.
LG says a Bluetooth connection may become unstable beyond 32 ft (10 m), when obstacles are present, or near strong radio interference. Treat that as guidance for the LG models covered by its support page, not a universal Bluetooth range limit.

Connect a soundbar or receiver with HDMI ARC
HDMI ARC can carry audio from a compatible projector to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver. Both devices need ARC-capable HDMI ports, and the projector must support sending audio over ARC. Epson’s instructions for a particular projector say to connect an ARC-compatible external speaker or A/V receiver to the projector’s ARC port using an optional HDMI cable. Epson’s HDMI ARC instructions include model-specific steps and settings.
- Check both manuals to confirm HDMI ARC support and identify the ARC-labeled ports.
- Connect those ports using a cable that meets the devices’ instructions.
- Enable the projector’s required HDMI control and audio-output settings, if applicable.
- Select the soundbar or receiver as the output and test playback.
BenQ also describes ARC and receiver connection setups in its projector soundbar connection guidance. The port names, menu paths, and supported audio formats depend on the specific models, so follow those manuals rather than assuming every projector uses the same settings.

If there is no sound over ARC
- Verify the cable is plugged into the ARC port on both devices, not just any HDMI port.
- Confirm ARC and any required HDMI control or audio-output setting are enabled.
- Make sure the soundbar or receiver is set to the correct HDMI input and is not muted.
- Check whether the source’s audio format is supported by both devices. Epson’s covered projector recommends trying PCM when audio output fails; other projectors may use different menus or support different formats.
Use optical or another wired audio output
If the projector and audio device share a supported wired connection, use the exact output-to-input combination listed in their manuals. Check whether the projector provides optical, analog, or another audio output, and whether the receiving device accepts it. Do not buy a cable based only on a connector that looks familiar: the port and audio format must be supported at both ends.

Check these details before buying outdoor audio equipment
- Compatibility: Confirm the projector’s audio output and the speaker’s matching input or Bluetooth audio support.
- Latency: Look for a low-latency option if using Bluetooth and check whether the devices provide audio-sync adjustment.
- Placement and range: Plan where the speaker will sit relative to the projector and audience; account for obstacles and wireless interference.
- Power: Check whether the speaker needs charging, batteries, or a nearby power connection.
- Outdoor use: Follow the equipment maker’s instructions for placement and exposure. Outdoor suitability varies by device; do not assume a speaker or cable is weather-safe without checking its specifications.
