To remove the gradient quickly, turn off Nova in Firefox’s advanced preferences: open about:config, find browser.nova.enabled, and set it to false. This disables the Nova redesign, not just the gradient. If you want to keep Nova, Firefox’s userChrome.css customization can target interface styling, but custom selectors may break after updates and Mozilla does not document a guaranteed selector for this gradient.

Change the preference to
false. Mozilla Support documents this as the way to disable Nova: Mozilla Support: disabling Firefox Nova.
This is the simplest documented workaround, but it rolls back the whole Nova redesign rather than changing only the tab strip or titlebar. Mozilla warns that changing advanced preferences can cause unexpected behavior or break features.

Keep Nova and customize the interface with userChrome.css
Firefox supports interface customization through a profile-level userChrome.css file. Mozilla’s setup instructions are to enable toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets in about:config, put the stylesheet in the profile’s chrome folder, and restart Firefox. Follow Mozilla’s guide for locating the profile and setting up the file: Mozilla Support: userChrome.css setup.
This route offers more control than disabling Nova, but Mozilla does not provide a guaranteed stable CSS selector specifically for the gradient. Its customization guide cautions: “Firefox is a work in progress and to allow for continuous innovation, Mozilla cannot guarantee that the styled elements will not change.” Rules may need to be revised after Firefox updates.

Use a Proton-style theme for a broader visual change
If you prefer a simpler, previous-style appearance without maintaining CSS, Mozilla’s Add-ons Community Blog is featuring a Firefox Proton theme. A theme changes the broader look of Firefox; it is not a documented way to remove only the titlebar gradient. See Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog: Firefox 157 and Nova.
Why the gradient appears
Mozilla Bugzilla report 2076618 describes the Firefox 157 Nova redesign on Windows as adding a horizontal gradient across the tab strip/titlebar, from grey on the left to reddish on the right. The report noted that the default theme did not offer a simple flat-color option when it was filed: Mozilla Bugzilla 2076618. Mozilla’s Add-ons Community Blog dates Nova’s Firefox 157 release to September 29, 2026. These details describe the documented Windows report; they do not establish identical behavior on every operating system or theme.
Quick Recap
Which option fits?
| Option | What changes | Maintenance and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Set browser.nova.enabled to false |
Disables Nova as a whole | Quickest documented toggle; advanced preference changes carry some risk of unexpected behavior. |
Use userChrome.css |
Can restyle selected interface surfaces | Most selective approach, but requires setup and CSS upkeep; selectors may change, and no guaranteed gradient-specific selector is documented. |
| Install a Proton-style theme | Changes the broader Firefox appearance | Easier than maintaining CSS, but not limited to the gradient. |
