Turn Off Mail Categories and Return to List View
The biggest visual change in the newer Apple Mail design is the category system that sorts incoming messages into tabs such as Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. If you prefer the older inbox where every message appears in one continuous list, you can turn categories off and return Mail to a simpler list-based view. This does not delete or move your email; it only changes how the inbox is displayed.
On iPhone
- Open the Mail app.
- Go to your Inbox. If you use multiple accounts, choose either a specific account inbox or All Inboxes.
- Tap the More button, shown as three dots, near the top-right corner.
- Select List View.
After switching to List View, the category tabs disappear and your inbox returns to a chronoal message list. If you later want to try Apple’s sorting again, open the same three-dot menu and choose Categories. The setting may need to be changed separately for different inbox views, depending on whether you are viewing one account or All Inboxes.

On iPad
- Open Mail and select the inbox you want to change from the sidebar.
- If the sidebar is hidden, tap the sidebar button in the top-left corner first.
- Tap the More button, usually shown as three dots near the top of the message list.
- Choose List View instead of Categories.
On iPad, the category tabs can feel more prominent because the larger screen gives Mail more room to show grouped sections and tab labels. Switching to List View makes the message list behave more like the older Mail app: new emails appear in order, and you do not have to check separate category tabs to make sure you have seen everything.
On Mac
Apple’s category view is most visible on iPhone and iPad, but newer versions of Mail on Mac may also show inbox organization or smart grouping depending on the macOS version and enabled features. To look for the equivalent control, open Mail, select your inbox, and check the toolbar or View menu for category or inbox organization options. If a List View or category toggle is available, choose the plain list option.
If you do not see category tabs on Mac, there may be nothing to disable for that part of the redesign. In that case, focus on the other settings that affect the older Mail feel, such as preview length, contact photos, column layout, and message grouping. Apple does not always keep iPhone, iPad, and Mac Mail settings identical, so a control available on one device may not appear on another.

Hide Contact Photos and Sender Icons
One of the most visible parts of the newer Apple Mail look is the row of circular sender images in the message list. Depending on the account and message, these may appear as contact photos, initials, company logos, or generic sender icons. If you prefer the older, denser inbox style, you can usually hide these images so the list looks more text-focused and takes up less visual space.
On iPhone
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Mail. On some iOS versions, Mail may appear directly in the main Settings list.
- Look for the Message List section.
- Turn off Show Contact Photos.
- Return to the Mail app and open your inbox again.
After this is disabled, Mail should stop showing the large circular contact images beside each message in the list. You may still see small sender-related indicators in certain views, especially for newsletters, business senders, or messages affected by other Mail features, but the standard contact-photo column should be removed from the inbox list.
On iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then choose Mail.
- Find Show Contact Photos under the message list settings.
- Switch it off.
The iPad version of Mail has more room than the iPhone version, so sender images can feel especially prominent in split view or landscape mode. Turning them off makes the sidebar and message list closer to the older compact style, with the sender name, subject, and preview text doing most of the work.
On Mac
- Open the Mail app.
- Click Mail in the menu bar, then choose Settings.
- Select the Viewing tab.
- Disable Show contact photos in the message list, if the option is available on your version of macOS.
- Close Settings and check the message list.
On macOS, this setting is tied to the message list view. If you do not see the exact checkbox, make sure your Mail window is wide enough and that you are checking Mail’s own settings rather than System Settings. Apple has adjusted wording and placement across macOS releases, so the setting may appear with slightly different text, but it is generally grouped with viewing and message list options.

There are a few limits. Turning off contact photos does not necessarily remove every visual identity cue in Mail. Apple may still show verification-style icons, brand marks, account avatars, or small symbols connected to categories, priority handling, VIPs, flagged mail, attachments, and unread status. You also cannot globally force every sender back to a plain text-only row across every Mail view. The setting mainly removes the large contact-photo treatment from the inbox list, which is usually the change that makes Mail feel less like the redesign and more like the older version.
Adjust Message Previews and List Density
If Apple Mail still feels too busy after turning off categories and contact photos, the next settings to adjust are message previews and list spacing. Message previews are the lines of body text shown under each sender and subject in the inbox. Reducing them can make Mail look closer to a traditional compact list, especially on smaller iPhone screens where the redesign can make each email take up more vertical space.
Change message preview lines on iPhone and iPad
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Mail. On some iOS or iPadOS versions, Mail may appear directly in the main Settings list.
- Tap Preview.
- Choose how many lines of each email you want to see: None, 1 Line, 2 Lines, 3 Lines, 4 Lines, or 5 Lines, depending on what your device offers.
For the most compact inbox, choose None or 1 Line. None removes the snippet of message body text from the message list, leaving mainly the sender, subject, and date. This is one of the quickest ways to make the redesigned inbox feel less crowded. If you still want a little context before opening a message, 1 Line is usually a good compromise.
Change message preview lines on Mac
- Open the Mail app on your Mac.
- Click Mail in the menu bar, then choose Settings.
- Select the Viewing tab.
- Open the List preview menu.
- Choose None, 1 Line, 2 Lines, or another available option.
Setting List preview to None gives Mail on the Mac a denser, more old-style message list. This works especially well if you use the column layout or keep the message viewer open, because you can select a message and read the contents in the reading pane without needing previews in the list itself.
Make the inbox feel denser
Apple does not provide a single “compact mode” switch for Mail on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, but you can combine several settings to get close. Use fewer preview lines, hide contact photos if you have not already done so, and avoid layouts that dedicate extra space to visual elements. On iPhone and iPad, the Mail list density is also affected by system-wide display settings: a smaller Text Size in Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size can fit more messages onscreen, though it affects other apps as well.
On iPad and Mac, the available space also depends on whether the sidebar and reading pane are visible. If the inbox looks cramped on iPad, rotate to landscape orientation or hide the mailbox sidebar when you do not need it. On Mac, resizing the message list column can make subjects and senders easier to scan, while reducing the preview lines keeps each row from becoming oversized.
Switch Back to the Classic Mail Layout on Mac
On the Mac, the most noticeable part of the Apple Mail redesign is often the reading layout: messages may open beside the message list in a modern column-based view, with a compact toolbar and more emphasis on sidebars. If you prefer the older Mail setup, you can make Mail feel much closer to the classic layout by changing the preview pane, list view, and sidebar behavior. Apple does not provide a single “restore old Mail” button, but the settings below remove much of the newer look.

Use the classic list-and-preview arrangement
The closest match to the traditional Mail layout is the classic view, where your message list appears above and the selected email preview appears below. This is different from the newer side-by-side layout, where the message list and reading pane sit in columns.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the Mail app on your Mac.
- Click Mail in the menu bar, then choose Settings.
- Select the Viewing tab.
- Turn on Use classic layout, if the option is available on your version of macOS.
- Close the Settings window and return to your inbox.
After this change, Mail should move away from the wide three-column feel and return to a more familiar stacked arrangement. If you do not see the Use classic layout checkbox, your macOS version may have changed or removed that specific control. In that case, you can still approximate the older layout using the View menu and sidebar controls.
Adjust the preview pane and sidebars
If the reading pane still appears in a place you do not like, use the View menu to change what Mail shows on screen. In Mail, click View in the menu bar and look for options such as Show Side Preview, Hide Side Preview, Show Mailbox List, or Hide Mailbox List. The exact wording can vary by macOS release, but these controls let you reduce the multi-pane appearance and give the message list more room.
- Hide the mailbox sidebar: Choose View > Hide Mailbox List to remove the left sidebar when you want a cleaner inbox.
- Show it again: Choose View > Show Mailbox List, or use the sidebar button in the toolbar.
- Resize panes: Drag the divider between the mailbox list, message list, and preview area to make the inbox feel less cramped.
- Open messages separately: Double-click an email to open it in its own window instead of relying on the preview pane.
Restore a simpler toolbar
The redesigned Mail toolbar can also make the app feel less familiar. To simplify it, control-click or right-click the toolbar and choose Customize Toolbar. Drag out buttons you do not use, such as extra filtering or action icons, and add back common controls like Get Mail, Delete, Reply, Forward, and Archive. You can also choose whether the toolbar shows icons only, text only, or both, depending on the options available in your macOS version.
These changes will not bring back every detail from older versions of Mail, especially if Apple has updated spacing, icons, or toolbar behavior in your current macOS release. Still, switching to the classic layout where available, hiding sidebars you do not need, resizing the preview area, and simplifying the toolbar can make Apple Mail on Mac feel much closer to the pre-redesign experience.
Reduce Distractions from Priority and Smart Features
Apple Mail’s newer design is not limited to visual changes. On supported versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Mail can also surface messages it thinks need attention, group related items more aggressively, and show extra prompts around replies, follow-ups, summaries, or time-sensitive mail. These features can be useful, but they also make the inbox feel busier if you prefer a plain message list. You usually cannot remove every intelligence-driven element from Mail, but you can tone down many of the alerts and smart suggestions around it.
Turn off Follow Up Suggestions
Follow Up Suggestions can push sent messages back into view if Mail thinks you may want to check in with someone. If you do not want Mail resurfacing old conversations, disable this option on each device you use.

Reduce time-sensitive and priority-style notifications
If Mail is drawing too much attention through banners, badges, sounds, or time-sensitive alerts, adjust notifications rather than the inbox itself. On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > Notifications > Mail. From there, you can turn off Time Sensitive Notifications, disable Sounds, remove Badges, or change alerts so they appear only in Notification Center instead of on the Lock Screen. If you use mulle accounts, tap Customize Notifications to set different alert behavior for iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, or other mailboxes.
On Mac, open System Settings > Notifications > Mail. You can switch the alert style to None, disable notification sounds, hide previews, or turn off badges. This does not change the Mail window, but it reduces the feeling that Mail is prioritizing messages for you throughout the system.
Limit Siri and Apple Intelligence suggestions related to Mail
Mail can also interact with Siri Suggestions, Search, and, on compatible devices, Apple Intelligence features. To reduce those prompts on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, then review the settings for app-based suggestions. If Mail appears in the app list, turn off options such as Learn from this App, Show in App, Show on Home Screen, or Suggest App, depending on what your device shows.
On Mac, open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri & Spotlight, then review Mail-related suggestions and Spotlight behavior. You can also open System Settings > Notifications and Spotlight to reduce where Mail content and suggestions appear. Apple’s wording changes between releases, so the exact labels may vary, but the goal is the same: prevent Mail from feeding extra suggestions into search results, summaries, widgets, and system prompts.
Some smart features may remain visible if they are built into the current Mail interface for your region, device, or operating system version. If there is no switch for a specific priority label, prompt, or smart grouping behavior, the practical workaround is to simplify the surrounding settings: use list view, hide sender photos, shorten previews, turn off follow-up prompts, and reduce Mail notifications. Together, those changes make the redesigned Mail app behave much more like a traditional inbox.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What You Can’t Fully Revert in Apple Mail
Even after turning off Categories, hiding sender photos, shortening previews, and switching the Mac app back to a more traditional layout, some parts of the newer Apple Mail experience cannot be completely removed. Apple usually lets you reduce visual clutter, but it does not provide a single “classic Mail” switch that restores every older behavior across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The result is that you can get close to the old inbox in many areas, while still seeing a few redesigned elements remain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOne limitation is that the overall interface style follows the current version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Toolbar shapes, spacing, menus, rounded panels, and system-wide typography are tied to the operating system, not only to Mail. On iPhone and iPad, you cannot restore every older button placement or pre-redesign visual treatment inside the Mail app. On Mac, the classic layout option can move the message list above or beside the preview pane depending on your settings, but it does not bring back every older macOS Mail detail from previous releases.
Apple Mail’s newer message intelligence features can also be toned down more than they can be erased. If your device supports Priority Messages, summaries, or other Apple Intelligence-related Mail features, you may be able to disable or reduce them through Mail settings, Apple Intelligence settings, or notification settings, depending on your software version and region. However, Apple may still reserve space in the app for newer controls, updated menus, or sorting behavior. Similarly, smart suggestions such as follow-up prompts, detected events, contact suggestions, and rich link or attachment handling may appear in certain contexts even if you have disabled the most visible smart inbox features.

Areas that may still look or behave differently
- System styling: Mail inherits the current iOS, iPadOS, and macOS design language, including spacing, icons, menus, and animation behavior.
- Toolbar and sidebar changes: Some buttons, filter controls, and navigation elements cannot always be moved back to their exact older positions.
- Search and filtering: Search suggestions, filter chips, and smart results may still use Apple’s newer presentation style.
- Conversation handling: Threaded email behavior can be adjusted, but not every older conversation-view behavior is available on all devices.
- Account-specific features: Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, iCloud, and other providers can expose different folders, labels, archive actions, and junk-mail behavior that Mail cannot make identical across accounts.
There are also differences between devices. A setting that exists on Mac may not exist on iPhone, and a Mail option in iOS may be absent or named differently on iPadOS. For example, Mac Mail has more visible layout controls because it supports a larger window, sidebars, preview panes, and menu-bar commands. The iPhone version is more constrained, so Apple often offers fewer layout choices. If you use Mail on several Apple devices, you may need to adjust each one separately rather than expecting a single setting to sync the old look everywhere.
If the redesign still feels too intrusive after changing the available settings, the only complete alternatives are to adapt your workflow or use a different email app. Outlook, Gmail, Spark, Thunderbird, and other clients offer their own inbox layouts, density controls, and category systems, but they also come with trade-offs such as different privacy policies, notification handling, account support, or subscription features. For most Apple Mail users, the practical goal is not a perfect rollback, but a cleaner setup: disable Categories, reduce visual previews, hide icons where possible, choose the densest comfortable list view, and turn off the smart features you do not use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I completely undo the new Apple Mail redesign?
No, Apple does not currently offer a single setting that restores every part of the old Mail app. You can turn off or tone down several major changes, including category tabs, contact photos, message previews, and the Mac layout. Some visual styling and smart features may remain depending on your iOS, iPadOS, or macOS version.
How do I turn off Mail Categories and get my normal inbox back?
On iPhone or iPad, open Mail, go to your inbox, tap the menu or more button near the top of the message list, and choose List View instead of Categories. This removes the Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions tabs from that mailbox view. You may need to repeat the change for other inboxes if you use mulle accounts or mailboxes.
Can I remove contact photos and sender icons from the Mail message list?
Yes, in most recent versions you can hide sender photos from Mail settings. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, go to Apps, choose Mail, and turn off Show Contact Photos if the option appears. On Mac, open Mail, go to Mail settings, check the Viewing section, and disable contact photos or related sender image options if available.
How do I make Apple Mail show more messages on screen again?
You can reduce the message preview length so each email takes up less vertical space. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, go to Apps, choose Mail, tap Preview, and select None or 1 Line. On Mac, use Mail settings to adjust list preview options, and consider switching to a denser layout if your version of macOS provides that setting.

Can I get the old classic Apple Mail layout back on Mac?
On Mac, open the Mail app, go to the View menu, and look for Use Column Layout or related layout options. You can also adjust whether the preview pane appears beside or below the message list by changing the layout and dragging pane dividers. This can make Mail feel much closer to the older desktop version, although it may not restore every previous visual detail.
Bottom Line
You can’t fully uninstall Apple Mail’s newer design, but you can make it feel much closer to the classic inbox by turning off Categories, hiding contact photos, shortening previews, and switching back to a more familiar list or column layout where Apple allows it. The exact controls vary between iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so adjust each device separately if you use Mail across your Apple ecosystem.
If the redesign still gets in your way after these changes, your best next step is to keep an eye on future iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates for added Mail options—or consider a third-party email app with a more traditional layout.
