The PS5 itself does not reliably send audio directly to ordinary Bluetooth speakers, so start by checking your TV’s audio features before buying an adapter.
Why direct Bluetooth pairing may not work
Ordinary Bluetooth speakers are not a dependable general-purpose audio output for the PS5. PlayStation’s current support guidance for error CE-109531-9 states: “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” PlayStation’s 2020 PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, also said that third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth were not supported. Those statements explain why a speaker may fail to pair or may not appear as a usable PS5 output device.

That does not prevent Bluetooth audio from working elsewhere in the signal chain. If the PS5 sends sound to a TV over HDMI and the TV can transmit its audio to a Bluetooth speaker, the TV can act as the link. Alternatively, a separate transmitter can receive audio from the TV’s optical output and send it to a paired speaker.

In practice, think of the setup as two separate connections: first, PS5 audio travels over HDMI to the display; second, the display sends that sound to the speaker, either through its own Bluetooth audio-output feature or through an external transmitter. If the second connection is missing, changing PS5 pairing settings will not create it. The useful first question is therefore not simply whether your TV has Bluetooth, but whether its manual confirms Bluetooth audio output to speakers.
Choose the route that fits your setup
| Route | What you need | When to choose it | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV Bluetooth audio output | A TV that can send its audio to Bluetooth speakers | When the TV already supports Bluetooth audio output | Bluetooth on the TV does not necessarily mean it can transmit TV sound to a speaker. |
| TV optical output plus Bluetooth transmitter | A TV optical digital audio output, a transmitter with an optical input, USB power, and a compatible Bluetooth speaker | When the TV lacks Bluetooth audio output but has optical audio out | Check supported audio formats and the transmitter’s speaker-pairing compatibility. |
| HDMI audio extractor plus Bluetooth transmitter, if needed | An extractor that provides an audio output usable by a transmitter; potentially a separate transmitter | When the TV or monitor has no suitable audio output | Confirm it supports the PS5’s required video resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and other HDMI features. |
Use the TV’s Bluetooth audio option if its documentation confirms the feature and it offers the behavior you want. Choose the optical-transmitter route when the TV has optical audio out but lacks Bluetooth audio output. Consider an extractor only if the display has no suitable audio connection. The more devices you add, the more compatibility points you need to verify: display output, adapter input, format support, speaker pairing, and—if an extractor is in the HDMI path—video passthrough.
If you are unsure, check the TV or monitor manual for its audio outputs and Bluetooth audio-output support. An HDMI audio extractor is a conditional workaround, not a Bluetooth transmitter by itself.
Route 1: Send the TV’s audio to a Bluetooth speaker
This is the simplest option if your TV supports Bluetooth audio output. The console remains connected to the TV over HDMI; the TV then routes its sound to the speaker. Menu names and available settings vary by TV model, so use the TV’s own manual for the exact pairing path.
- Connect the PS5 to the TV over HDMI and confirm that console audio plays through the TV.
- Put the Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode.
- Open the TV’s sound or audio-output settings and look for an option to pair or select a Bluetooth audio device.
- Select the speaker and confirm that the TV routes audio to it.
- Check whether the TV can keep its own speakers active at the same time, if that matters for your setup. This behavior can vary by TV and connection type.
Do not assume a TV can send audio over Bluetooth just because it has Bluetooth for another feature, such as a remote or input device. The relevant capability is Bluetooth audio output. If the manual does not confirm it, use the optical-output route if available.
If the TV pairs successfully but you hear sound only from the TV speakers, revisit the TV’s audio-output selection rather than the PS5 pairing menu. Some TVs change their audio behavior when an output is selected, and whether internal speakers can remain on is model-dependent. Test this before relying on simultaneous TV and speaker playback; it is not a universal Bluetooth feature.

Route 2: Connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the TV’s optical output
A Bluetooth audio transmitter can take sound from the TV’s optical digital audio output and send it wirelessly to a paired speaker. Sony documents this arrangement for its WLA-NS7 transmitter: an optical cable carries audio from the TV to the transmitter, USB supplies power, and the transmitter pairs with a Bluetooth device. The steps below describe that documented connection; other transmitters may have different controls or requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the connections. Confirm that the TV has an optical digital audio output and that the transmitter has an optical input labeled for digital audio in. Check that the Bluetooth speaker can pair with the transmitter.
- Connect optical audio. Run an optical cable from the TV’s optical digital audio output to the transmitter’s DIGITAL IN or equivalent optical input.
- Power the transmitter. Connect it to USB power. If the TV has no USB power output, Sony’s WLA-NS7 guidance says to use a commercially available USB AC adapter.
- Set the TV’s digital audio format if required. For the transmitter setup described in Sony’s TV support guidance, set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM. Other products may have different format requirements; check the instructions for both the TV and transmitter.
- Pair the devices. Put the transmitter and Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode, then follow the transmitter’s pairing instructions. Confirm that the speaker indicates a connection.
- Test PS5 audio. Play audio from the console and check that the TV is outputting sound through its optical connection to the transmitter and speaker.
Before buying, verify the full chain: TV optical output, transmitter optical input, required audio format, USB power arrangement, and compatibility with the speaker. An optical transmitter is a separate category of adapter from a USB Bluetooth dongle connected to the PS5; PlayStation’s cited materials do not establish that arbitrary USB Bluetooth adapters provide Bluetooth-speaker output on the console.
Optical audio is a wired connection from the TV to the transmitter; only the last leg, from transmitter to speaker, is Bluetooth. This distinction matters when checking product descriptions. A transmitter advertised as Bluetooth-capable still needs an input that matches the TV’s output, and a device with an optical input is not the same as one with an optical output. Read the input/output labels and diagrams, not just the product title.
PCM is a specific instruction in Sony’s described TV-to-transmitter setup, not a guaranteed setting for every television or adapter. If you do not see an optical audio setting, consult the TV manual for the digital audio output menu. If a transmitter’s own instructions call for a different compatible format, follow the documentation for that device combination rather than assuming all products behave like the WLA-NS7.
Route 3: Consider an HDMI audio extractor if the display has no usable audio output
If a TV or monitor lacks both Bluetooth audio output and a suitable audio output for a transmitter, an HDMI audio extractor may provide a separate audio feed. Depending on its connections, the extractor may offer analog or optical audio. If it does not transmit Bluetooth itself, you will also need a Bluetooth transmitter that accepts the extractor’s audio output.
An extractor sits in the HDMI signal path, so check video compatibility before using one with a PS5. Verify the model supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and other HDMI features you want to use. Also confirm that its audio output matches the transmitter’s input. A manufacturer support page describes an HDMI ARC extractor in certain AV receiver and transmitter configurations, but that does not establish universal PS5 compatibility or identify one extractor for every setup.

- List the video features you need from the PS5 and display.
- Check that the extractor supports those features in your intended HDMI arrangement.
- Confirm that it provides an audio output, such as optical or analog, that your Bluetooth transmitter can accept.
- Connect and test the chain before relying on it: PS5 to extractor, extractor to display, and extractor audio output to the transmitter if required.
Do not buy an extractor on the assumption that it automatically adds Bluetooth. It separates or routes audio from HDMI; Bluetooth transmission is a separate function unless the specific device documentation says otherwise. For a display with an audio output already accepted by a transmitter, the extractor may be unnecessary. Compare the display’s available outputs first, then add an extractor only to solve the missing-output problem.
Set the PS5 audio output for the connected path
PlayStation’s audio settings are at Settings > Sound > Audio Output. PlayStation says users can select an output device and configure the HDMI device type there. Options depend on the connected devices and configuration.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Review the selected output device and use the option that matches the actual connection to the TV or other HDMI audio equipment.
- If configuring an HDMI device type, select the option that reflects your setup. PlayStation’s examples include choosing AV Amplifier and setting the number of channels and speaker positions; those options should match the connected equipment.
- Test sound through the TV, then through the Bluetooth route you chose. Adjust the TV’s audio-output settings separately if needed.
These console settings configure the PS5’s audio path; they do not turn an unsupported Bluetooth speaker into a directly compatible PS5 device. For the Bluetooth link, use the TV or transmitter’s settings.
If sound works on the TV but not through the speaker, troubleshoot from the TV outward: check whether the TV has selected its Bluetooth speaker or optical output, whether the transmitter receives power and audio, and whether the speaker is paired to that transmitter. This isolates the downstream link instead of changing unrelated PS5 options. Conversely, if the TV itself has no PS5 sound, first check the HDMI connection and the console’s selected output device.
Check common problems
The speaker does not appear in the PS5 output-device list
That is consistent with the console’s Bluetooth compatibility limitation. Do not treat repeated direct pairing attempts as proof that the TV or speaker is faulty. Pair the speaker with a Bluetooth-capable TV, or use a compatible transmitter connected to the TV’s optical output.
The TV has Bluetooth, but no speaker pairing option
The TV may support Bluetooth for another purpose without supporting Bluetooth audio output. Check the TV manual for the specific audio-output capability. If the TV has optical audio out, a transmitter connected there is a documented alternative.

The transmitter pairs, but there is no sound
- Confirm that the optical cable runs from the TV’s optical output to the transmitter’s optical input.
- Check that the TV is set to output audio through the relevant digital connection.
- For the Sony-described TV optical-transmitter setup, set digital audio output to PCM; check other products’ instructions for their required formats.
- Make sure the transmitter and speaker are paired with each other, rather than only being in pairing mode.
Pairing confirms the wireless connection, but it does not by itself confirm that the TV is sending a format the transmitter can use. Check the selected TV audio output and format as well as the physical cable direction. Optical connectors can look similar at both ends, so verify which port is marked output on the TV and input on the transmitter.

The display has no optical output
Check whether it has another audio output accepted by a Bluetooth transmitter. If it has no suitable output, an HDMI audio extractor may be an option, but you must verify both its audio connection and its support for the video features you need.
Audio seems out of sync during gameplay
Bluetooth audio can raise a latency concern, but the available product guidance does not establish a latency figure or guarantee synchronization for arbitrary TV, transmitter, and speaker combinations. If timing matters, test the complete setup with the games and content you use before settling on it; do not assume that every Bluetooth route will perform the same way.
There is no supported basis here for ranking the TV’s built-in Bluetooth against every external transmitter by delay, or for promising that a particular speaker will stay synchronized. Treat sync as a setup-specific test rather than a spec you can infer from the word “Bluetooth.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before buying an adapter
- TV or monitor output: Identify whether it supports Bluetooth audio output, optical audio out, or another usable audio output.
- Transmitter input: Match the transmitter’s input to the display or extractor output; for an optical route, it needs an optical digital audio input.
- Speaker pairing: Confirm that the transmitter supports pairing with your Bluetooth speaker.
- Audio format: Check the TV’s digital-output format options and the transmitter’s supported formats. PCM is specified for Sony’s described setup, not established here as a universal requirement.
- Video passthrough: If using an extractor, verify that it preserves your required PS5 resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and other HDMI features.
- Power: Check how the transmitter is powered; Sony’s WLA-NS7 instructions use USB and specify a USB AC adapter if the TV has no USB power output.
A practical buying sequence is to identify the display output first, then match an adapter’s input, then confirm speaker pairing and format support. For an optical setup, the chain is TV optical output → transmitter optical input → Bluetooth speaker. For an extractor arrangement, include the HDMI video path and check every connection in that chain. This order helps avoid buying an adapter that has Bluetooth but lacks the input you need, or an extractor that provides audio but cannot preserve the video configuration you use.
No particular transmitter or extractor price, latency rating, or universal compatibility guarantee is established by the product guidance described here, so compare the documented ports and features of the specific models you are considering. No single route is guaranteed to work with every combination of PS5, display, transmitter, and Bluetooth speaker. Choosing based on the available outputs and checking the full connection chain is more reliable than buying an adapter based only on the word “Bluetooth.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a Bluetooth speaker directly to a PS5?
Direct Bluetooth audio is not a dependable general-purpose PS5 route. PlayStation’s current CE-109531-9 support message says the Bluetooth audio device is not compatible with PS5 consoles. Use a TV that supports Bluetooth audio output or connect a compatible transmitter to the TV’s optical output instead.
Does having Bluetooth on my TV mean it can send PS5 audio to a speaker?
Not necessarily. A TV may use Bluetooth for other features without supporting Bluetooth audio output. Check the TV manual for the specific ability to send TV sound to Bluetooth speakers, and whether the TV’s own speakers can remain active if you need both.
What do I need to use an optical Bluetooth transmitter?
You need a TV with optical digital audio output, a transmitter with an optical audio input, power for the transmitter, and a Bluetooth speaker that can pair with it. Sony’s WLA-NS7 setup uses USB power; Sony says to use a commercially available USB AC adapter if the TV has no USB power output. For Sony’s described TV setup, set digital audio output to PCM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill a USB Bluetooth dongle make my speaker work with the PS5?
PlayStation’s cited materials do not validate arbitrary USB Bluetooth adapters for Bluetooth-speaker output. The documented alternative is to route audio from the TV’s optical output to a compatible Bluetooth transmitter.
Do I need an HDMI audio extractor?
Only consider one if the TV or monitor lacks a suitable audio output for a Bluetooth transmitter. Check that the extractor provides an audio connection your transmitter accepts and supports the PS5 video resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and other HDMI features you need. The extractor may not transmit Bluetooth itself.
Will Bluetooth audio have noticeable delay in games?
The support material does not establish a latency figure or guarantee synchronization for arbitrary combinations of TV, transmitter, and speaker. Test the complete setup with your games if timing matters.
The Bottom Line
To get PS5 audio through a Bluetooth speaker, first check whether your TV supports Bluetooth audio output. If not, a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the TV’s optical output is a documented alternative; use an HDMI audio extractor only when the display has no suitable audio output, and verify its video and audio compatibility. Direct PS5 Bluetooth pairing and arbitrary USB dongles are not dependable substitutes.
