How to Get PS4 Out of Safe Mode [Fix Stuck & Loop Issue]

Start with Restart PS4, a USB data-connected DUALSHOCK 4, and connection or display checks. If Safe Mode keeps returning, update or rebuild before initialization, which erases local data.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To get a PS4 out of Safe Mode, connect a DUALSHOCK 4 with a USB data cable, press the PS button, and choose 1. Restart PS4. If the console returns to Safe Mode, check its connections and display settings, then try a system-software update or database rebuild before considering any option that erases data.

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting menu, not a diagnosis. The cause may be a display or connection problem, failed update, corrupted data, storage fault, or another hardware issue. Work through the least destructive fixes first.

What PS4 Safe Mode Is

Safe Mode starts the PS4 with restricted functions so you can troubleshoot display, system-software, database, and initialization problems. The console may have been deliberately started in Safe Mode, or it may be unable to complete a normal startup. Sony describes it as a troubleshooting tool for data and display issues. See Sony’s Safe Mode guide.

Why a PS4 Keeps Entering Safe Mode

Possible causes include an interrupted update or shutdown, corrupted system or database data, a display-resolution or HDMI issue, a controller cable that does not carry data, loose or damaged connections, a failing internal drive, or another hardware fault. Repeated Safe Mode boots alone do not prove that the hard drive has failed.

  • Works with dualshock 4 controllers
  • 6.5ft cable
  • Made with quality ferrite coil
  • Usb to Micro-USB USB
  • Gold plated connectors

If Safe Mode starts after a power outage, let any on-screen check finish if possible, then try Restart PS4. A power loss can prompt a storage check; it does not necessarily mean the data is corrupted.

Safe Mode Options and Data Risk

Option numbers or wording can vary with system-software version or interface. Follow the labels shown on your console. The table summarizes the options described in Sony’s Safe Mode documentation.

Option What it does Data risk When to use it
1. Restart PS4 Attempts a normal reboot No data deletion intended First step
2. Change Resolution Restarts at a basic display resolution No data deletion intended Blank screen or display incompatibility
3. Update System Software Updates through the internet or supported USB media Normally non-destructive; do not interrupt it Failed or incomplete system update
4. Restore Default Settings Resets console settings Settings are reset Possible configuration problem
5. Rebuild Database Reorganizes the console’s content database Not intended as an initialization, but storage failure can make operations unstable Abnormal loading, missing icons, or database issues
6. Initialize PS4 Resets the console while retaining system software Deletes user data Last resort before reinstalling software
7. Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) Erases the drive and reinstalls system software Complete local data loss Final software recovery step
8. Set HDCP Mode Changes HDCP behavior, where available No normal game-data deletion Some HDMI or HDCP display problems

Connect the Controller and Enter Safe Mode

Safe Mode requires controller input. Sony’s instructions call for a DUALSHOCK 4 connected by USB. A controller lighting up does not guarantee that the cable is transferring data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn the PS4 completely off; the power indicator should be off, not orange.
  2. Connect the controller directly to the PS4 with a known-good USB data cable. Do not use a hub or dock.
  3. To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the console’s power button and release it after the second beep.
  4. Press the controller’s PS button after connecting it.
  5. If the controller is not detected, try another USB port, another data cable, or another compatible controller. Temporarily disconnect other USB devices and external storage.

If the console is already in Safe Mode, connect the controller and press PS before choosing an option. See Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions.

How to Get a PS4 Out of Safe Mode

  1. Select 1. Restart PS4 and confirm if prompted.
  2. Let the console attempt a normal startup. If it returns to Safe Mode, do not keep selecting Restart repeatedly.
  3. Turn the console off using the Safe Mode menu if available. Wait for the indicator to go fully dark.
  4. Unplug unnecessary USB accessories and external storage. Check that the power cable is secure and the HDMI cable runs from the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to the display.
  5. Reconnect the cables and start the PS4 normally. If the screen is blank or says “no signal,” try 2. Change Resolution from Safe Mode.
  6. If the console still loops, continue with the update and data-repair steps below.

Sony identifies USB, HDMI, and power connections as possible causes when Safe Mode cannot start correctly. Check the cables and ports before assuming the console needs a reset: Sony’s Safe Mode connection troubleshooting.

Fix a PS4 That Keeps Returning to Safe Mode

1. Check the display and connections

Try 2. Change Resolution if the PS4 appears to start but the screen is black, flickering, or showing “no signal,” particularly after you changed displays or display settings. Connect HDMI directly to the TV or monitor for troubleshooting; receivers, splitters, capture devices, or HDCP compatibility can complicate the signal. PS4 Pro users with a 4K display can also check Sony’s Safe Mode display guidance.

2. Update system software from Safe Mode

If the Safe Mode menu works, select 3. Update System Software. Try the internet option first if available; use a wired LAN connection if wireless updating fails. Keep the console powered on until the process finishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the PS4 can reach its home screen but an update failed, Sony advises deleting the failed update from Notifications and trying again through Settings > System Software Update. If the console cannot reach the home screen or the online update fails, use the manual USB method.

3. Update from a USB drive

Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and download the ordinary PS4 update file from Sony’s system-software page. Do not use this smaller update file for a full system-software reinstallation.

  1. On a computer, create a folder named PS4 on the USB drive and an UPDATE folder inside it.
  2. Save Sony’s update file in PS4/UPDATE/ with the required filename PS4UPDATE.PUP. Keep the folder and file names in uppercase.
  3. Insert the USB drive into the PS4 and enter Safe Mode.
  4. Select 3. Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device, then follow the prompts.
  5. Do not disconnect power or the USB drive while installation is in progress.

If the PS4 does not recognize the file, check the format, folder names, file name, and location. Make sure you downloaded the official update file, not the separate reinstallation file. Sony lists these requirements in its USB update instructions.

4. Restore default settings or rebuild the database

Use 4. Restore Default Settings if the problem appears related to configuration. It resets settings; do not confuse it with Initialize PS4, which deletes user data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use 5. Rebuild Database for abnormal loading, missing content icons, or suspected database problems. It reorganizes the database and may take a long time. Do not interrupt the process while it is active. It cannot repair a physically failing drive, and it should not be described as guaranteed risk-free if storage is failing. If it repeatedly freezes, shows storage errors, or the console returns to Safe Mode, move on to backing up what you can or arranging repair rather than repeating it indefinitely. Sony recommends rebuilding the database for certain PS4 content and loading problems: Sony’s PS4 troubleshooting guidance.

5. Initialize PS4 only as a last resort

Before selecting 6. Initialize PS4 or 7. Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software), back up data if the console still allows it. Initialization can erase local saves, installed games, screenshots, video clips, settings, and profiles. Cloud saves are available only if they were previously synchronized and you can access the relevant account and service.

Option 6 resets the console and deletes user data while retaining system software. Use it only after less destructive steps fail and you accept the data loss.

6. Reinstall system software from USB

Option 7 is the final software recovery path. It erases the internal drive and reinstalls the operating system. Use Sony’s separate PS4 console reinstallation file, not the ordinary update file. Sony describes this as a factory-reset process and recommends backing up data if possible.

When to Suspect a Storage or Hardware Problem

A failing or unreadable internal drive can prevent system software from loading, but a Safe Mode loop by itself is not proof. Repeated storage errors, freezes during database rebuilding, a failed reinstall, or a loop that continues after successful reinstallation are reasons to investigate the drive or another hardware fault. The PS4 uses a replaceable 2.5-inch SATA internal drive; drive replacement is an advanced repair. See this iFixit PS4 hard-drive guide, or use PlayStation’s repair process if you are not comfortable working inside the console.

FAQ: PS4 Safe Mode

Does Rebuild Database delete games or saves?

It is intended to reorganize the content database, not initialize the console. However, it is not a guaranteed fix or a promise of zero risk if the drive is failing. Back up important data when possible.

Why does my PS4 return to Safe Mode after Restart?

The console may have an incomplete update, corrupted data, a display or connection issue, unreadable storage, or another hardware or power fault. Try the connection and display checks, then update and rebuild the database before considering initialization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my controller work in Safe Mode?

Safe Mode requires a USB connection and a controller the console recognizes. Try a different USB port, a known-good data cable, another compatible controller, and disconnect USB hubs or accessories. Press PS after connecting the controller.

Which USB file should I use for a PS4 update?

Use the ordinary update file for 3. Update System Software. Use Sony’s separate reinstallation file only for 7. Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) or when the console specifically requests it. Both require the correct folder and filename structure.

When should I initialize or reinstall system software?

Only after less destructive steps fail and after backing up data if possible. Option 6 deletes user data; option 7 erases the drive and reinstalls the system software. If a reinstall fails or the Safe Mode loop returns afterward, seek hardware diagnosis or repair.

Bottom Line

Start with a wired DUALSHOCK 4 connection and 1. Restart PS4. If Safe Mode returns, check power, USB, HDMI, and display settings, then update system software and try Restore Default Settings or Rebuild Database before any data-erasing option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Initialize or reinstall only after understanding the data loss and backing up what you can. A loop that persists after successful reinstallation may point to a storage or other hardware problem and needs repair assessment.
