Use page.viewport() to read Puppeteer’s configured viewport and await page.setViewport({ width, height }) to set it. Set the viewport before navigating when possible; use page.emulate(device) instead when you need a device profile that also changes the user agent.
Set a page viewport
A Puppeteer Page represents one browser tab or extension background page. Set its viewport before loading a site so the page lays out for the intended dimensions from the start:

const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 640,
height: 480,
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(page.viewport());
setViewport() is asynchronous, so await it. The dimensions are in CSS pixels; deviceScaleFactor controls the device scale factor. Puppeteer recommends setting the viewport before navigation because changing it after a page has loaded can produce unexpected behavior. Changes to isMobile or hasTouch can trigger a reload. See the Page.setViewport() API reference.
Choose a viewport size
Pass the width and height that suit the layout you want to test. For example, the official API example uses 640 × 480 with a device scale factor of 1. Choose other dimensions for your own target; Puppeteer does not require that particular size.

Read the configured viewport
Call page.viewport() synchronously and inspect the returned value:
const viewport = page.viewport();
console.log(viewport);
It returns Puppeteer’s configured viewport settings, based on page.setViewport() or the default configured when connecting to the browser. It does not independently measure the browser’s actual viewport. The API return type is Viewport | null; see Page.viewport().

Use device emulation when dimensions are not enough
page.setViewport() is for viewport settings. If you need a known device profile that also applies a user agent, use page.emulate(device) before navigation:
import { KnownDevices } from 'puppeteer';
const page = await browser.newPage();
const device = KnownDevices['iPhone 17 Pro'];
await page.emulate(device);
await page.goto('https://example.com');
The device name above is the one used in the current Puppeteer documentation; available device definitions may vary by installed version. emulate() is a shortcut for setting the user agent and viewport. Refer to Page.emulate() for the API details.

Viewport size versus browser content-area size
A page viewport and the browser window’s content area are related, but they are managed separately. If your goal is to change the browser’s content-area dimensions rather than configure a page viewport, follow Puppeteer’s window-management guidance. Its example clears the default viewport with page.setViewport(null) before using page.resize(): Window management.

- The returned size is unexpected:
page.viewport()reports Puppeteer’s configured setting, not a measurement of the rendered browser. Check the value you passed tosetViewport()and the connection’sdefaultViewport. - The page changes or reloads after resizing: set the viewport before
page.goto(). In particular, changes toisMobileorhasTouchcan reload a page. - The browser window is still the wrong size: viewport configuration is not the same operation as resizing the browser content area. Use the window-management API and guidance instead.
- A device profile is missing: device definitions are tied to the Puppeteer version in your project. Check the installed version’s
KnownDevicesentries rather than assuming every documented device name is present.
